Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was the development of a thermomechanical procedure to process Aluminum-Magnesium alloys and testing effects of alloying additions on these alloys. Magnesium contents of eight and ten weight percent and the alloying effects of copper and manganese were studied. Microstructures and mechanical properties at six warm rolling temperatures located above and below the solvus line of these alloys were examined. Ultimate tensile strengths in excess of 680 MPa (99 KSI) were obtained. Microstructural evidence indicated that the precipitation of the 'beta' intermetallic phase was one of the most important mechanisms in controlling the strength of the alloy. Furthermore, precipitation is so rapid at higher temperatures that it becomes the strongest force within the microstructure and its presence prevents any possible recrystallization of the alloy. However, when the temperature exceeds the solvus temperature for the alloy, recrystallization does occur with large losses in both yield and ultimate tensile strength. (Author).

Book excerpt: Microstructures and mechanical properties resulting from thermomechanical processing of high-Magnesium (Mg) content Aluminum-Magnesium (Al-Mg) alloys were investigated in this research. Warm rolling processes, intended to refine both grain size and second phase Al3Mg2 (beta) particle size, were conducted for alloy compositions of 10.2 weight % Mg, 10.2 weight % Mg plus 0.5 weight % copper (Cu) and 12.1 weight % Mg. Solution treatment, hot upset forging, resolutioning and rapid cooling provided initial microstructural homogenization. Subsequent warm rolling was employed to refine the microstructure. The effect of warm rolling parameters of beta particle size and distribution was of particular concern. By warm rolling an alloy containing 10.2 % Mg plus 0.5 % Cu at 250 C, an ultimate tensile strength of 565 MPa (82000 psi), with 11.5 % elongation, was achieved with the added advantage of a strength to density ratio higher than present equivalent-strength alloys, such as 7075-T6.

Book excerpt: The Materials Engineering Division at Frankford Arsenal is involved in an extensive research effort aimed at upgrading the engineering properties of wrought high strength 7000 series aluminum alloys through thermomechanical processing of the ingot material. The development of two new ingot thermomechanical processing techniques, ISML-ITMT and FA-ITMT, is presented. The effects of these techniques on the recrystallization behavior, grain morphology, tensile properties, fracture toughness and stress corrosion resistance of high purity 7075 alloy sheet and plate is presented. The recrystallization of 7075 alloy into a fine grained material was found to be controlled by the distribution of the major alloying elements, Zn, Mg and Cu, as well as by that of the ancillary element, Cr. The results showed that for a given standard temper, i.e., T6, T76 and T73, high purity ITMT processed 7075 alloy has finer grain size, equivalent strength and better ductility, fracture toughness and stress corrosion characteristics than commercial 7075 alloy. The work also showed that high purity ITMT processed 7075 alloy in the FTMT temper (a temper involving a deformation stage between an initial and a final artificial aging stage) has higher strength, ductility and fracture toughness than commercial 7075-T6 alloy. Book excerpt: Abstract : Critical exploration of the minimalistic high strength low alloy aluminum (HSLA-Al) paradigm is necessary for the continued development of advanced aluminum alloys. In this study, scandium (Sc) and zirconium (Zr) are examined as the main precipitation strengthening additions, while magnesium (Mg) is added to probe the synergistic effects of solution and precipitation hardening, as well as the grain refinement during solidification afforded by a moderate growth restriction factor. Further, pathways of recrystallization are explored in several potential HSLA-Al systems sans Sc. Aluminum-titanium-boron (Al-Ti-B) and aluminum-titanium-carbon (Al-Ti-C) grain refining master alloys are added to a series of Al-Zr alloys to examine both the reported Zr poisoning effect on grain size reduction and the impact on recrystallization resistance through the use of electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) imaging. Results include an analysis of active strengthening mechanisms and advisement for both constitution and thermomechanical processing of HSLA-Al alloys for wrought or near-net shape cast components. The mechanisms of recrystallization are discussed for alloys which contain a bimodal distribution of particles, some of which act as nucleation sites for grain formation during annealing and others which restrict the growth of the newly formed grains.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive treatise on the hot working of aluminum and its alloys, Hot Deformation and Processing of Aluminum Alloys details the possible microstructural developments that can occur with hot deformation of various alloys, as well as the kind of mechanical properties that can be anticipated. The authors take great care to explain and differentiate hot working in the context of other elevated temperature phenomena, such as creep, superplasticity, cold working, and annealing. They also pay particular attention to the fundamental mechanisms of aluminum plasticity at hot working temperatures. Using extensive analysis derived from polarized light optical microscopy (POM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD) scanning electron-microscopy with electron backscatter imaging (SEM-EBSD), and orientation imaging microscopy (OIM), the authors examine those microstructures that evolve in torsion, compression, extrusion, and rolling. Further microstructural analysis leads to detailed explanations of dynamic recovery (DRV), static recovery (SRV), discontinuous dynamic recrystallization (dDRX), discontinuous static recrystallization (dSRX), grain defining dynamic recovery (gDRV) (formerly geometric dynamic recrystallization, or gDRX), and continuous dynamic recrystallization involving both a single phase (cDRX/1-phase) and multiple phases (cDRX/2-phase). A companion to other works that focus on modeling, manufacturing involving plastic and superplastic deformation, and control of texture and phase transformations, this book provides thorough explanations of microstructural development to lay the foundation for further study of the mechanisms of thermomechanical processes and their application.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A review is made of the available information on thermomechanical processing of aluminum alloys, especially with respect to their fatigue behavior. An attempt is made to evaluate from the scarce and sometimes contradictory experimental evidence the possibility of improving the fatigue resistance of high-strength aluminum alloys by these treatments. To do so, it is also necessary to review the important microstructural features and deformation characteristics of these alloys, which seem to control the various stages of fatigue, and which may be influenced by the thermomechanical treatments. The discussion is limited to thermomechanical treatments subsequent to solution annealing. It is concluded that suitable processing offers the advantage of improving both strength and ductility in Al-Cu and Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys. If the effects of inclusions can be minimized, significant benefits are possible in fatigue, at least in Stage I crack resistance, by thermomechanical processing.

Book excerpt: Isothermal hot compression tests were performed on aluminum alloy 2014 (AA2014) to study the evolution of microstructure over a wide range of temperatures (300°C-500°C) and strain rates (0.001-100 s-1). The true stress-true strain curves obtained at all deformation temperatures and strain rates showed gradual flow softening, which is typical of a dynamic recovery-type material such as aluminum. Processing maps that delineate the stable and unstable regions during hot working were developed and validated by comparing the microstructures recorded in the deformed specimens. Optimum processing conditions (temperature > 450°C, strain rate

Book excerpt: The effect of processing variables on the microstructural development and superplasticity of aluminum alloy 2090, a high strength Aluminum-Copper-Lithium-Zirconium alloy of reduced density in comparison to other A1-based materials, was investigated. Following previous research, warm rolling was conducted to strains, up to 3.36 and it was found that increasing the strain to values greater than 2.6 offered no improvement in subsequent superplastic response. Increased rolling speeds likewise did not enhance ductibility above a maximum value of approximately 240 percent. Microstructural examination revealed a refined, homogeneous microstructure consisting of T2 particles distributed in an alloy matrix. These particles reside a triple junctions in a recovered microstructure. Theses. (AW).
