Download or read book Carbon Alloys written by E. Yasuda and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2003 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years the Japanese have funded a comprehensive study of carbon materials which incorporate other elements including boron, nitrogen and fluorine, hence the title of the project "Carbon Alloys". Coined in 1992, the phrase "Carbon Alloys" can be applied to those materials mainly composed of carbon materials in multi-component systems. The carbon atoms of each component have a physical and/or chemical interactive relationship with other atoms or compounds. The carbon atoms of the components may have different hybrid bonding orbitals to create quite different carbon components. Eiichi Yasuda and his team consider the definition of Carbon Alloys, present the results of the Carbon Alloys projects, describe typical Carbon Alloys and their uses, discuss recent techniques for their characterization, and finally, illustrate potential applications and future developments for Carbon Alloy science. The book contains over thirty chapters on these studies from as many researchers. The most modern of techniques, particularly in the area of spectroscopy, were used as diagnostic tools, and many of these are applicable to pure carbons also. Porosity in carbons received considerable attention.
Book Synopsis Environmental Barrier Coatings by : Kang N. Lee
Download or read book Environmental Barrier Coatings written by Kang N. Lee and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-12-29 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global increase in air travel will require commercial vehicles to be more efficient than ever before. Advanced engine hot section materials are a key technology required to keep fuel consumption and emission to a minimum in next-generation gas turbines. Ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) are the most promising material to revolutionize gas turbine hot section materials technology because of their excellent high‐temperature properties. Rapid surface recession due to volatilization by water vapor is the Achilles heel of CMCs. Environmental barrier coatings (EBCs) is an enabling technology for CMCs, since it protects CMCs from water vapor. The first CMC component entered into service in 2016 in a commercial engine, and more CMC components are scheduled to follow within the next few years. One of the most difficult challenges to CMC components is EBC durability, because failure of EBC leads to a rapid reduction in CMC component life. Key contributors to EBC failure include recession, oxidation, degradation by calcium‐aluminum‐magnesium silicates (CMAS) deposits, thermal and thermo‐mechanical strains, particle erosion, and foreign object damage (FOD). Novel EBC chemistries, creative EBC designs, and robust processes are required to meet EBC durability challenges. Engine-relevant testing, characterization, and lifing methods need to be developed to improve EBC reliability. The aim of this Special Issue is to present recent advances in EBC technology to address these issues. In particular, topics of interest include but are not limited to the following: • Novel EBC chemistries and designs; • Processing including plasma spray, suspension plasma spray, solution precursor plasma spray, slurry process, PS-PVD, EB-PVD, and CVD; • Testing, characterization, and modeling; • Lifing.

Book Synopsis Residual Stresses in Composite Materials by : Mahmood M. Shokrieh
Download or read book Residual Stresses in Composite Materials written by Mahmood M. Shokrieh and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2014-02-14 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Residual stresses are a common phenomenon in composite materials. They can either add to or significantly reduce material strength. Because of the increasing demand for high-strength, light-weight materials such as composites and their wide range of applications in the aerospace and automotive industries, in civil infrastructure and in sporting applications, it is critical that the residual stresses of composite materials are understood and measured correctly. The first part of this important book reviews destructive and non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques for measuring residual stresses. Various mathematical (analytical and numerical) methods for calculation of residual stresses in composite materials are also presented. Chapters in the first section of the book discuss the simulated hole drilling method, the slitting/crack compliance method, measuring residual stresses in homogeneous and composite glass materials using photoelastic techniques, and modeling residual stresses in composite materials. The second part of the book discusses residual stresses in polymer matrix, metal-matrix and a range of other types of composites. Moreover, the addition of nanoparticles to the matrix of polymeric composites as a new technique for reduction of residual stresses is discussed. Residual stresses in composite materials provides a comprehensive overview of this important topic, and is an invaluable reference text for both academics and professionals working in the mechanical engineering, civil engineering, aerospace, automotive, marine and sporting industries. Book Synopsis Carbon-Carbon Composites by : E. Savage

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carbon fibre reinforced carbon composites form a very specialized group of materials. They may be considered as a development of the family of carbon fibre reinforced polymer composites which are becoming ever more prevalent in modern engineering. Since the early 1960s a large number of so-called 'advanced materials' have appeared on the scene. Carbon~arbon is arguably the most successful of all these products finding many and varied applications. In the field of Formula 1 motor racing for example, the present levels of performance simply could not be achieved without the use of carbon-carbon brakes and clutches. Despite the materials' obvious assets, they have not, and will not, reach their full potential until their inherent problems of excessive production costs and oxidation resistance have been addressed properly. In this respect the 'carbon-carbon story', of much potential but only limited success, serves as a lesson to all those involved in materials research, development and application. In writing this book I have tried to set up a logical progression of what the materials are, how they are made, what their assets and deficiencies are, what they are used for and to what extent they are commercially exploited. Each specialized chapter may be considered in isolation or as part of a sequence, whereas the final chapter provides a summary of the principal concepts as well as a basic review of the economic situation past, present and, hopefully, future.
