This book was released on 2019-09-03 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first single volume monograph that systematically summarizes the recent progress in using non-Fourier heat conduction theories to deal with the multiphysical behaviour of smart materials and structures. The book contains six chapters and starts with a brief introduction to Fourier and non-Fourier heat conduction theories. Non-Fourier heat conduction theories include Cattaneo-Vernotte, dual-phase-lag (DPL), three-phase-lag (TPL), fractional phase-lag, and nonlocal phase-lag heat theories. Then, the fundamentals of thermal wave characteristics are introduced through reviewing the methods for solving non-Fourier heat conduction theories and by presenting transient heat transport in representative homogeneous and advanced heterogeneous materials. The book provides the fundamentals of smart materials and structures, including the background, application, and governing equations. In particular, functionally-graded smart structures made of piezoelectric, piezomagnetic, and magnetoelectroelastic materials are introduced as they represent the recent development in the industry. A series of uncoupled thermal stress analyses on one-dimensional structures are also included. The volume ends with coupled thermal stress analyses of one-dimensional homogenous and heterogeneous smart piezoelectric structures considering different coupled thermopiezoelectric theories. Last but not least, fracture behavior of smart structures under thermal disturbance is investigated and the authors propose directions for future research on the topic of multiphysical analysis of smart materials.

Book Synopsis Thermal Buckling Analysis for Stiffened Orthotropic Cylindrical Shells by : L. K. Chang
Download or read book Thermal Buckling Analysis for Stiffened Orthotropic Cylindrical Shells written by L. K. Chang and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theory for thermal buckling of an orthotropic, multilayered, stiffened cylindrical shell is presented. The theory includes the effects of eccentricity of layers and stiffening, and deformations prior to buckling. It is sufficiently general to account for discrete rings and averaged properties of longitudinal stiffening, as well as arbitrary temperature distributions through the thickness of the shell and depth of the stiffeners. Two computer programs are described corresponding to solutions for buckling obtained by using finite differences and determinant plotting or modal iteration. Computed results for thermal buckling of unstiffened and ring-stiffened shells are presented and are in reasonable agreement with published results. The interaction of thermal loading and axial compression in two large diameter stiffened shells representative of a launch vehicle interstage and a preliminary supersonic transport fuselage design is investigated. Results indicate that budding can occur in both structures at a realistic temperature under thermal loading alone.

This book was released on 2021-01-29 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offers a review of the newest methodologies for the characterization and modelling of lightweight materials and structures Advances in Multifunctional Lightweight Structures offers a text that provides and in-depth analyses of the thermal, electrical and mechanical responses of multi-functional lightweight structures. The authors, noted experts on the topic, address the most recent and innovative methodologies for the characterization and modelling of lightweight materials and discuss various shell and plate theories. They present multifunctional materials and structures and offer detailed descriptions of the complex modelling of these structures. The text is divided into three sections that demonstrate a keen understanding and awareness for multi-functional lightweight structures by taking a unique approach. The authors explore multi-disciplinary modelling and characterization alongside benchmark problems and applications, topics that are rarely approached in this field. This important book: • Offers an analyses of the thermal, electrical and mechanical responses of multi-functional lightweight structures • Covers innovative methodologies for the characterization and modelling of lightweight materials and structures • Presents a characterization of a wide variety of novel materials • Considers multifunctional novel structures with potential applications in different high-tech industries • Includes efficient and highly accurate methodologies Written for professionals, engineers and researchers in industrial and other specialized research institutions, Advances in Multifunctional Lightweight Structures offers a much needed text to the design practices of existing engineering building services and how these methods combine with recent developments.

Book Synopsis Stresses in Layered Shells of Revolution by : V. Kovarik
Download or read book Stresses in Layered Shells of Revolution written by V. Kovarik and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shell structures are key components in a very wide range of engineering enterprises. The theory of layered shells of revolution under the quasistatic action of loading and temperature is the subject of this book. The shells treated here are in general of an asymmetric sandwich structure. A linear theory is developed which allows for a transition to shells with less layers, that is two-layered and homogeneous structures. The first half of the book is concerned with orthotropic elastic shells. In particular, it includes the membrane theory of cylindrical, spherical and conical shells, and the bending theory of cylindrical shells, storage tanks and pressure-vessels. In each of the numerical examples considered, an attempt is made to map different regimes of structural behaviour. The second half of the book is devoted to viscoelastic shells. First the time-invariant hereditary theory is presented, describing the response of viscoelastic materials. According to the correspondence principle of this theory the actual viscoelastic shell may be replaced by a conjugate elastic one. In this way many of the results from the first half of the book can be put to good use even for viscoelastic shells. The time-dependent material characteristics are taken into account by means of the time-temperature principle. In an appendix (Part VI), the mathematical prerequisites are presented. With viscoelasticity comes the need to employ further mathematical disciplines; integral equations and integral transformations are usually encountered. Here, instead, a different concept has been chosen, the distributional concept of Laurent Schwartz, which allows many problems to be tackled in a simple formal way. In discussing the distribution theory, a level accessible to a technical reader has been maintained. The book is intended as a textbook for students and teachers of structural and aeronautical engineering. The book will also appeal to a broad range of practising engineers working in areas of aeronautical, civil, and mechanical engineering, as well as to those working for firms dealing with shell structures.

Book Synopsis Thermal Stress Analyses by : D. J. Johns
Download or read book Thermal Stress Analyses written by D. J. Johns and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermal Stress Analyses deals with both elastic and plastic thermal stresses produced from large variations in temperature and thermal expansion in materials whose properties are time-independent. This book is composed of eight chapters. The opening chapter illustrates the general three-dimensional thermoelastic problem, which requires the determination of stress, strains and displacements, when the body forces and boundary conditions are known while the next chapter demonstrate a simpler, two-dimensional formulation involving plane strain and plane stress. The succeeding five chapters describe thermal stresses in various structures, including in thin plates, beams, circular cylinders, and shells. The closing chapters consider the mechanism of thermal buckling and sundry design problems. This book is of value to mechanical engineers, and to mechanical engineering teachers and students.
