The difficulties of experimental investigation of near-field phenomena between macroscopic parallel surfaces led to the theoretical investigation of near-field effects between two spheres and experimental investigation between a sphere and a flat plate. A new technique for measuring the radiative transfer between a sphere and a substrate using a bi-material atomic force microscope cantilever as the sensor was developed. By measuring "heat transfer-distance" curves, just as one measures "force-distance" curves in atomic force microscopy, the experimental results are shown to be in agreement with a theory.

The procedure is applied to the radiative heat transfer and the van der Waals friction using both the semi-classical theory of the fluctuating electromagnetic field and quantum field theory. Applications of the radiative heat transfer and non-contact friction to scanning probe spectroscopy are presented. The theory gives a tentative explanation for the experimental non-contact friction data. The book explains that radiative heat transfer and the van der Waals friction are largely enhanced at short separations between the bodies due to the evanescent electromagnetic waves. Particular strong enhancement occurs if the surfaces of the bodies can support localized surface modes like surface plasmons, surface polaritons or adsorbate vibrational modes. An electromagnetic field outside a moving body can also be created by static charges which are always present on the surface of the body due to inhomogeneities, or due to a bias voltage. This electromagnetic field produces electrostatic friction which can be significantly enhanced if on the surface of the body there is a 2D electron or hole system or an incommensurate adsorbed layer of ions exhibiting acoustic vibrations.

Les flux rayonnés par des émetteurs multicouches supportant des phénomènes d'interférence sont ensuite calculés numériquement. Ces phénomènes permettent de contrôler le spectre d'émission et donc l'optimisation d'un émetteur sélectif pour des applications TPV. Il s'avère important de prendre en compte l'évolution en température des propriétés optiques des matériaux constituant l'émetteur. Il est démontré que le contrôle des phénomènes d'interférences au sein des structures multicouches sur substrat métallique permet d'obtenir des émissivités spectrale et totale hémisphérique 20 fois supérieures à celles du substrat seul. Le chapitre suivant est dédié au rayonnement thermique en champ proche entre un émetteur semi-infini et une couche mince. Cette configuration est proche d'un système TPV, où l'émetteur semi-infini peut être assimilé au corps rayonnant, et le film à une cellule PV. Différent phénomènes sont analysés : le comportement des résonances de polaritons de surface, l'absorption spatiale de la puissance radiative en champ proche et les phénomènes d'interférences dans le régime de transition champ proche-champ lointain. Ces phénomènes peuvent être mis à profit pour la conception de spectres optimisés. Dans le dernier chapitre, les performances de systèmes TPV en champ proche (TPV-CP) sont simulées numériquement à l'aide d'un code couplé transport des charges-rayonnement. Les modèles basés sur l'hypothèse de faible injection utilisés généralement pour simplifier le problème du transport des charges électriques dans la cellule PV sont évalués en détails. Différentes architectures de cellules permettant d'optimiser les performances du système sont présentées en conclusion. Ces travaux offrent un nouvel éclairage sur le rayonnement des structures multicouches et leur application à la conversion thermophotovoltaïque.

Book excerpt: Near field radiation transfer between objects separated by small gaps is a widely studied field in heat transfer and has become more important than ever. Many technologies such as heat assisted magnetic recording, aerogels, and composite materials with interfacial transport involve heat transfer between surfaces with separations in the nanometer length scales. At separations of only a few nanometers, the distinction between classical thermal conduction and thermal radiation become blurred. Contact thermal conduction is understood through the means of interfacial transport of phonons, whereas thermal radiation is understood by the exchange of heat through the electromagnetic field. Typically conductance values in the far field radiation regime are on the order of 5 W/m2K, whereas contact conductance is on the order of 108 W/m2K. While near field radiation experiments have reached separations down to on the order of 10 nm and measured 104 W/m2K, there are still 4 orders of magnitude change that occurs over 10 nm of separation. However to this day, there does not exist a single unified formalism that is able to capture the relevant physics at finite gaps all the way down to the contact limit. The success of the continuum electromagnetic theory with a local dielectric constant has allowed accurate modeling of thermal transport for materials separated by tens of nanometers. The validity of this approach breaks down at the contact limit as the theory predicts diverging thermal conductance. The nonlocal dielectric constant formalism has successfully been applied to correct this error and predict transport at nanometer separations for metals and nanoparticles. However, success has been limited for deriving nonlocal dielectric constants for insulators as it is both theoretically and computationally more challenging and requires accurate atomic modeling to retrieve a valid continuum dielectric that reproduces the response of the system. In this work, the continuum approach is avoided and an approach is taken which more closely resembles the conduction picture, by performing atomistic modeling of the thermal transport between two semi-infinite media. The interatomic forces of both short-range chemical bonding forces and long ranged electromagnetic forces are included in an atomistic Green's function formalism in order to accurately calculate thermal transport at finite gaps down to the contact limit. With a single, unified formalism the bridge between conduction and radiation is finally achieved.

Furthermore, we utilize the nano-film broadband emitters for demonstrating heat transfer that beats conventional blackbody limit at deep-subwavelength distances. We demonstrate the first of its kind, fully integrated and re-configurable thermo-photovoltaic on silicon platform. We report over an order of magnitude increase in generated electrical power by electro-statically tuning the distance between a suspended hot emitter TE ~ 880 K) and an underlying detector (maintained at TD ~ 300 K) from ~500 nm to ~100 nm. We believe this demonstration will be influential for the fields of active energy harvesting as well as in realizing integrated thermal control systems. In the third part of this work, we shift our focus away from broadband emitters, towards spectrally narrow band thermal emitters and propose a novel technique for long-distance transport of thermal radiation.
