Book Synopsis Pollution in Tropical Aquatic Systems by : Des W. Connell
Download or read book Pollution in Tropical Aquatic Systems written by Des W. Connell and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-05-04 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have identified a need to draw together knowledge of physiochemical and biological aspects of pollution in tropical aquatic systems. This book results from this and we hope will assist in providing management strategies to protect these systems from pollution effects. In organising the book we have, as far as possible, attempted to cover the range of topics important in understanding pollution in tropical areas. Authors who are expert in their particular fields have been invited to contribute. We recognise that many topics remain uncovered but we hope will serve to assist in identifying these and stimulate interest in this area.

Book Synopsis Biologically Allowable Thermal Pollution Limits by : W. Drost-Hansen
Download or read book Biologically Allowable Thermal Pollution Limits written by W. Drost-Hansen and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The expected Gaussian or skewed-Gaussian curve for lethal thermal limits did not materialize. Instead an abrupt death point occurred often within an interval of 1°C and in many cases within 0.5°C resembling a step function. One of the most important conclusions from this data is that the temperature tolerances obtained in the laboratory conformed closely to those observed in the field. Thus, the field data (Perkison, in preparation, Bader, et al., 1970) could be interpreted with more validity as to the effect of temperature versus other environmental factors. It should be emphasized that the laboratory upper thermal limits of the algae were borne out in distribution in the field in each case. The upper limits found in the laboratory for Halimeda, Penicillus, and Valonia were found to be the thermal limits in the field. When sustained temperatures above those found as laboratory survival limits were encountered at Turkey Point, these plants disappeared.

Download or read book Ecology of Estuaries written by Michael J. Kennish and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-11-11 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecology of Estuaries represents the most definitive and comprehensive source of reference information available on the human impact on estuarine ecosystems. The volume discusses both acute and insidious pollution problems plaguing these coastal ecotones. It also provides a detailed examination of the deleterious and pervasive effects of human activities on biotic communities and sensitive habitat areas in estuaries. Specific areas covered include organic loading, oil pollution, polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, chlorinated hydrocarbons, heavy metals, dredging and dredged-spoil disposal, radionuclides, as well as other contaminants and processes. The diverse components of these anthropogenic influences are assembled in an organized framework and presented in a clear and concise style that facilitates their understanding.
