Book excerpt: This thesis is a study of escape from metastable wells in one and two dimensional potentials of superconducting devices. We have measured escape rates due to both thermal activation over the barrier and macroscopic quantum tunneling through the barrier. The measurements were performed for a variety of device parameters, corresponding to different shapes of the potential barrier. We find strong evidence for macroscopic quantum tunneling in both one and two dimensional systems with an escape rate that is very sensitive to the dissipation present in the system. Surprisingly, we have also found a discrepancy between our results and the predictions of Kramers' thermal activation model in certain types of potentials.

Josephson junctions are extensively used in superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) and in persistent-current qubit systems. Noise excitations, however, have a critical influence on their dynamics. Thus, the primary focus of this research was to investigate the effects of thermal activation on the superconducting properties of Josephson junctions. Specifically, thermal noise tends to result in a range of switching currents, values less than the critical current at which a junction switches from the superconducting to the normal state. First, a general review of superconductivity concepts is given, including a treatment of the Josephson phenomena. Next, I describe some of my work on characterizing the current-voltage traces of Josephson junctions tested at 4 K with a Multi-Chip Probe (MCP). Then, I describe thermal activation theory and examine the equations useful for modeling switching current distributions. The aim of the workshop has been to report on the recent theoretical and experimental results on the macroscopic quantum coherence of macroscopic systems. Particular attention was devoted to Josephson devices. The correlation with other atomic and molecular systems, exhibiting a macroscopic quantum behaviour, was also discussed. The seminars provided both historical overview and recent theoretical ground on the topic, as well as information on new experimental results relative to the quantum computing area. The first workshop on this topic, held in Napoli in 1998, has been ennobled by important reports on observations of Macroscopic Quantum Coherence in mesoscopic systems. The current workshop proposed, among many stimulating results, the first observations of Macroscopic Quantum Coherence between macroscopically distinct fluxoid states in rf SQUIDs, 20 years after the Leggett's proposal to experimentally test the quantum behavior of macroscopic systems. Reports on observations of quantum behaviour in molecular and magnetic systems, small Josephson devices, quantum dots have also been particularly stimulating in view of the realization of several possible q-bits.
