Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on their extensive experience, the authors present an approach to the treatment of the adult incest survivor. This combines cognitive- behavioural, psychodynamic, and family treatment perspectives to encompass the full breadth and scope of the healing and recovery process. While acknowledging the need for the survivor to become conscious of the incestuous experience and its impact, the authors view memory retrieval as only the first step in healing; the ultimate goal is letting go of the past to actively reinvent the present. The book presents specific guidelines for the initial, middle and end phases of the therapy, for family-of-origin therapy, and for treatment of the male incest survivor.

Furthermore, the very nature of the material that is presented by these women is so emotionally charged that a case is made for the group to be run by co-therapists and for therapist debriefing. Evaluation of the group is presented in the form of self-report and feedback from the participants and individual therapists. The group could easily be used as the basis for empirical research into its effectiveness. Additionally, it offers the beginning incest therapist a small but concentrated body of information about the population. No conclusions will be drawn about the proposed program since that is beyond the scope of this project.

Book excerpt: It is estimated that at least one in four or five women and one out of ten men was sexually abused as a child by a family member. Most of those people continue to suffer in adulthood because of undeserved guilt, anxiety, and shame. Reclaiming Our Lives, written by a survivor of abuse and a psychotherapist specializing in the treatment of adult survivors of abuse, uses interviews with survivors and a healing approach to track the adult problems and what to do about them. Issues of trust, power, control, sexuality, and intimacy are examined in detail. The book concludes with an alphabet of survival tactics and a fourteen-step guide for growth for the survivor.

Book excerpt: Integrating the Shattered Self offers therapists who are treating adult incest survivors a detailed guide to treatment and the course of recovery. It provides treatment strategies, outline phases of the work, and describes characteristic client responses. This book offers the clinician an understanding of incest through the eyes of the child victim, the adult client, and the recovered survivor. Therapy for incest survivors differs from other psychotherapy because these clients bring a unique set of defenses, strengths and needs. Roth helps the therapist to understand these features and to respect the individual client's style of coping. The book details the levels of understanding and intervention the therapist needs to provide. Roth conceptualizes the therapy into four distinct phases and goals. She observes that clients first move through validation, then develop a new world view, go on to emotional flooding, and, finally, reach new hope and termination. With each phase, she describes in detail the client's experiences and appropriate therapeutic responses. The many examples illustrating effective insights and treatment strategies will spark the reader to be creative and expansive in his or her own work with these clients. Such difficult issues as current family relationships for the client, both with her family of origin and her adult partner, are covered. Specific examples illustrate how therapists can guide survivors toward healthy and powerful relationships with their fathers, stepfathers, mothers, siblings, and partners. Vital matters such as confrontation and forgiveness are discussed in detail. Incest treatment can easily overwhelm a clinician. The therapy is complicated andthe emotionality is intense. Treatment relies heavily on the confidence, comfort, and good boundaries of the therapist. If the therapist approaches incest therapy with a personal agenda, there is an underlying bias that will influence the client's direction. This book offers a respectful and hopeful picture of these courageous survivors. With the proper therapeutic understanding, full recovery can be achieved. It is an intensive, long-term experience for the client and the therapist with bountiful rewards for both.

Book excerpt: Currently, there is some controversy regarding psychotherapy with female adult survivors of childhood incest. A particular point of contention is the question of therapist gender; more specifically, are women therapists better able to serve these women clients? During the course of psychotherapy with a female client, she revealed to me that she had been a child victim of incest. In consultation, a colleague suggested that perhaps it was time for my patient to switch to a female therapist. It seemed vaguely understood that this assumption was 'right' although neither my colleague nor I was able to articulate his or my concerns. In the course of our discussion, it became apparent that the actual complexity of the issue begged for further investigation. Presently, there does appear to be some common sentiment within the mental health community that women with a sexual abuse/incest history are better served by female therapists; and that female therapists are more sensitive to and understanding of the particular issues and feelings inherent to this population. Furthermore, there is some contention that treatment with a male therapist might arouse intense negative reactions and insurmountable resistances. My treatment of the aforementioned female client continued on for several months. During the course of our work, a myriad of issues came to life in an enlightening way through the transference and countertransference. This case discussion is an attempt to share our experience with the hope of elucidating a very complicated issue.

Book excerpt: This book is a useful reference for anyone seeking to provide therapy to survivors of sexual abuse. The approach represented here is a holistic one that utilizes various approaches to heal the various manifestations of sexual abuse trauma. Since the acts associated with such abuse are often so difficult to discuss, this book presents several methods of communicating these unspeakable horrors nonverbally, allowing the survivor to express their trauma with less difficulty. This approach seeks to use the actions of the body to heal the mind. This text contains information relevant to treatment for children, adolescents, and adults, as well as male or female, and in group or individual settings. Many useful activities are outlined and illustrations are provided as examples.
