Book excerpt: Cell Cycle in the Central Nervous System overviews the changes in cell cycle as they relate to prenatal and post natal brain development, progression to neurological disease or tumor formation.Topics covered range from the cell cycle during the prenatal development of the mammalian central nervous system to future directions in postnatal neurogenesis through gene transfer, electrical stimulation, and stem cell introduction. Additional chapters examine the postnatal development of neurons and glia, the regulation of cell cycle in glia, and how that regulation may fail in pretumor conditions or following a nonneoplastic CNS response to injury. Highlights include treatments of the effects of deep brain stimulation on brain development and repair; the connection between the electrophysiological properties of neuroglia, cell cycle, and tumor progression; and the varied immunological responses and their regulation by cell cycle.

Book excerpt: This clinically oriented book covers all aspects of the evidence-based decision making process in multidisciplinary management of the natural dentition. The book opens by clarifying the principles of evidence-based decision making and explaining how these principles should be applied in daily practice. Individual chapters then focus specifically, and in detail, on endodontic, periodontal, and prosthetic considerations, identifying aspects that need to be integrated into decision making and treatment planning. Evidence-based decision making with regard to preservation of the natural tooth versus extraction and implant placement is then discussed, and a concluding chapter examines likely future trends in dentistry and how they may affect clinical decision making. The authors include leading endodontists, periodontists, and prosthodontists. Given the multidisciplinary and comprehensive nature of the book, it will be relevant and interesting to the entire dental community.

Book excerpt: This richly illustrated book is a wide-ranging guide to modern diagnostics and treatment planning in orthodontics, which are mandatory prior to the initiation of any type of comprehensive treatment. The importance of three-dimensional (3D) imaging techniques has been increasingly recognized owing to the shortcomings of conventional two-dimensional imaging in some patients, such as those requiring complex adult treatment and those with temporomandibular joint dysfunctions or sleep disturbances. In the first part of this book, readers will find clear description and illustration of the diagnostic role of the latest 3D imaging techniques, including cone beam computed tomography, intra-oral scanning, and magnetic resonance imaging. The second part explains in detail the application of 3D techniques in treatment planning for orthodontic and orthognathic surgery. Guidance is also provided on the use of image fusion software for the purposes of accurate diagnosis and precise design of the most appropriate biomechanical approach in patients with malocclusions.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Helping patients achieve an optimal quality of life through patient-centered treatment planning should be the ultimate goal of all oral health care providers. However, this issue extends beyond the realm of the individual clinician's office. This text presents quality-of-life research from various fields, including psychology, public health, and general health care; discusses how a patient-centered approach can be applied to basic oral and craniofacial research, clinical dental practice, community dental health issues, and dental education; and addresses how oral health-related quality of life relates to treating and understanding different patient populations, such as children with special needs, medically compromised patients, patients with oral cancer, and patients with chronic facial pain. Also discussed is how factors such as race/ethnicity, gender, and age can affect oral health-related quality-of-life concerns and treatment strategies. Finally, the book offers an outlook on the role that oral health-related quality of life will play in future research and dental education.

Since the publication of the first edition of the book with the title Dental Erosion, new knowledge for a better understanding of this important subject has been gathered. The new and more detailed insights resulted in this second, extended publication. It presents a broad spectrum of views, from the molecular level to behavioural aspects, as well as trends in society. In particular, the issues concerning chemical and biological factors as well as dental erosion in children are covered more extensively in this second edition. The first chapters include topics such as the definition, diagnosis, interaction, epidemiology and histopathology of tooth wear. Further, the aetiology of dental erosion, including nutritional and patient-related factors, and dental erosion in children are discussed. This book is a valuable and indispensable guide to better oral health and is highly recommended to faculty members, researchers, dental students, practitioners and other dental professionals.

Abstract: This doctorial thesis begins with a systematic review on clinical studies on single-visit and multiple-visit non-surgical endodontic treatment. The review found that neither single-visit treatment nor multiple-visit treatment could guarantee the absence of postoperative pain. Since the study design of many studies displays significant limitation, and the materials and equipment used in endodontic treatment have dramatically changed in recent years, prospective randomised clinical trials are needed to further verify the postoperative pain and success rate of single-visit versus multiple-visit endodontic treatment. This study also performed a systematic review on clinical studies on core-carrier obturation. A meta-analysis concluded that the success rate of endodontic treatment using core-carrier obturation is high (79%), and the incidence of postoperative pain is low (11%). Most teeth (87%) had adequate adaptation using core-carrier obturation material but one third of them had overfilling. A questionnaire survey was conducted to investigate the preference for single-visit and multiple-visit endodontic treatment among the 16 registered endodontists and 800 randomly selected general dentists in Hong Kong. Eight endodontists and 429 general dentists returned their questionnaires and the results found most endodontists (88%) and general dentists (93%) preferred offering multiple-visit treatments. The two commonest reasons for choosing multiple-visit treatment for both endodontists and general dentists were the positive effects of inter-appointment medications and that the tooth to be treated had doubtful prognosis. Three randomised clinical trials were performed in this study at two clinics, one in The University of Hong Kong (HKU) in Hong Kong and the other in Peking University (PKU) in Beijing. The first clinical trial compared the time in performing non-surgical endodontic therapy with or without the use of a magnifying loupe. Ninety-six teeth were treated with a magnifying loupe and 86 teeth were treated without a magnifying loupe. The results found the use of a magnifying loupe could significantly reduce the endodontic treatment time. The results also showed that treatment time was associated with preoperative pain, number of root canal, number of treatment visit, experience of operator and site of treatment (HKU or PKU); but not associated with age, gender, tooth vitality, or the presence of apical radiolucency or sinus tract. The second clinical trial compared the incidence of post-obturation pain at one and seven days after single-visit and multiple-visit non-surgical endodontic treatment. A total of 538 teeth from patients attending were evaluated. The result found single-visit or multiple-visit endodontic treatment had no difference in their incidence of postoperative pain, which was not uncommon after one day (29%) but was infrequent (5%) after seven days. The third clinical trial was performed at HKU clinic to compare the success rate, prevalence of postoperative pain and chairside time of single-visit and multiple-visit endodontic treatment. A total of 220 teeth were followed up for at least 18 months. The average follow-up period was 29 months. The results found that the success rate and prevalence of postoperative pain of single-visit or multiple-visit treatment had no significant difference. The chairside time for single-visit treatment was shorter than multiple-visit treatment.

Fusion enhancement, bone-void filling in tumor surgery and trauma are only a few examples. Autologous bone can be considered as the most successful bone graft material, and constitutes the accepted 'gold standard', as it combines all the properties required from the bone graft. In this book a 'state of the art in bone substitution for the spine' is presented. The general principles of bone biology and bone healing are outlined, as are recent advances in understanding and influencing bone formation. A variety of substitutes are described and compared.
