Book excerpt: Volume IV (2005) covers preparation, characterization of colloids, stability and interaction between pairs of particles, and in concentrated systems, their rheology and dynamics. This volume contains two chapters written, or co-authored by J. Lyklema and edited contributions by A.P.Philipse, H.P. van Leeuwen, M. Minor, A. Vrij, R.Tuinier and T. van Vliet. The volume is logically followed by Vol V, but is equally valuable as a stand alone reference. * Combined with part V, this volume completes the prestigious series Fundamentals of Interface and Colloid Science * Together with volume V this book provides a general physical chemical background to colloid science * Covers all aspects of particle colloids

An understanding of the fundamental principles involved in the stabilization of solid contamination is, therefore, important for formulation of improved weapons cleaning materials. In this investigation, the stability of common weapon contamination was studied in aqueous surfactant solutions. Zeta potentials of aqueous dispersions of lyophobic colloids were determined by electrophoresis measurements and compared with sedimentation times of the dispersed systems. The stability of the dispersions was found to be governed by double-layer electrostatic repulsion at the surface of the colloidal particles. Calculations based on the Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek theory of stability were in excellent agreement with the experimental data. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is devoted to long-range surface forces sig nificant far beyond a single monolayer and felt over tens or even hundreds of molecular layers adjacent to an interface. The transi tion from the concept of short-range effects that reigned earlier to the concept of long-range forces simultaneously signified the transition from a two-dimensional world to a three-dimensional one, incomparably richer in physicochemical phenomena. This transition took many years and evolved through many steps. It began with the Gouy-Chapman theory of diffuse ionic atmospheres, which together with London's theory of molecular forces was used as a basis for the development (beginning in 1937) of the DLVO theory of stability of lyophobic colloids. Further elaboration of the theory involved the introduction of new types of force, and a generalization (in 1954) to the case of interaction between unlike particles (hetero coagulation). This theory is fundamental in such large-scale prac tical problems as flotation, water treatment, dyeing, soil science, microbiology, and interaction between biological cells. This book is the first comprehensive monograph devoted to sur face forces. This fact makes it easier to attract the reader's interest; yet, the reader's demands become all the more difficult to satisfy completely. Indeed, the research that we review and analyze here covers about 50 years of work. Much data has been amassed, so that the main problem was a careful selection and an alysis.

Book excerpt: This book bridges three different fields: nanoscience, bioscience, and environmental sciences. It starts with fundamental electrostatics at interfaces and includes a detailed description of fundamental theories dealing with electrical double layers around a charged particle, electrokinetics, and electrical double layer interaction between charged particles. The stated fundamentals are provided as the underpinnings of sections two, three, and four, which address electrokinetic phenomena that occur in nanoscience, bioscience, and environmental science. Applications in nanomaterials, fuel cells, electronic materials, biomaterials, stems cells, microbiology, water purificiaion, and humic substances are discussed.

Book excerpt: Colloid and Surface Science records the plenary and main lectures of the International Conference on Colloid and Surface Science, held in Budapest Hungary in September 1975. The conference discusses such topics as main factors affecting the stability of colloids; the thermodynamics of adsorption excess quantities; pore structure of solids; the effect of adsorption on the interaction between solid particles; colloid and surface chemical aspects of mesophases; and the measurement of surface tension by exact methods. Physicists and chemists specializing in colloids and surface tension will find the book very insightful.

Book excerpt: This book explores statistical physics, with an emphasis on the distinct character of the statistical motion and difficult subjects, related, mainly, to condensed matter. It discusses the interaction problem in real gases, as well as dimensionality effects and melting. The book shows how to estimate easily the critical temperature of the Ising ferromagnets, the origin of the drag force, how to get an inverse-wind vortex in turbulence, the entropy of the earthquakes, and how the gas-liquid transition occurs. It also describes the hadronization of the quark-gluon plasma, the phase diagram of the quantum chromodynamics, and the thermodynamics of black holes.
