Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theory of the Glaciers of Savoy When this letter arrived my father despatched Rendu's memoir to Dr. Whewell at Cambridge, by return of post but it arrived too late to be Of use. He was convinced that this was the most complete answer that could be given to such allegations. With precisely the same feel ings do I now give to the public the first opportunity they have had of consulting the memoir. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook for Travellers in Switzerland, and the Alps of Savoy and Piedmont The routes in the Handbook have been rearranged, as far as possible, to suit the convenience of travellers - all changes and improvements in roads, railways, and steamers have been noticed - and a vast number of new roads over little-known Alpine, Passes have been described in the present and preceding editions. Plans Of the principal towns are added. This edition is corrected as far as possible up to the time of publication, and contains notices of the railways which now bring Switzerland almost, as it were, to our own door. An Index has been prepared for the Swiss Handbook, independent of the Section relating to Savoy and Piedmont; and as each is furnished with a map, the two parts may be bound up separately for convenience, without injuring the completeness of either. Book Synopsis The Oberland and Its Glaciers by : H. B. George
Download or read book The Oberland and Its Glaciers written by H. B. George and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-29 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Oberland and Its Glaciers: Explored and Illustrated With Ice-Axe and Camera Books on Alpine travel and photographs of Alpine scenery have of late become so familiar to the public, that no suggestion for adding to the number of either would ever have been seriously entertained, had it not been for a belief that a new and useful combination, of the two might be made. The writer has often found that people who have never seen a glacier, however keenly they may be interested in glacier theory for its own sake, and in mountain adventure on behalf of their friends, are unable to obtain any clear idea of what a glacier really is, except from elaborate viva voce explanation of Alpine pictures. Professor Tyndall's Glaciers of the Alps, the most lucid in style of all works on glacier theory, was written mainly to enunciate an entirely new doctrine, and therefore contains much of argument and controversy, which are unnecessary for a sufficient understanding of the subject by those who are content to take one set of opinions on. Book Synopsis The Cause of the Glacial Period by : H. L. True
Download or read book The Cause of the Glacial Period written by H. L. True and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cause of the Glacial Period: Being a Resume and Discussion of the Current Theories to Account for the Phenomena of the Drift, With a New Theory by the Author The evidence which has been observed and collected indicates that at some time in the past a large portion of the Northern Hemisphere of our globe has been ground by moving ice - glaciers. In fact, the evidence of this is so conclusive that few intelligent persons hesitate to accept it as a proven fact; but when it comes to accounting for this, then scientists differ from one another. Although many theories have been brought forward to explain the cause of the Arctic climate necessary for such glacial action, and to account for the motive or propelling power in the ice to produce such effects as have been observed, yet none of these theories have received universal indorsement. While one eminent scientist will present one theory and advocate it with all the zeal and ingenuity at his command, claiming it affords a complete, rational and plausible explanation of all the phenomena usually attributed to the Glacial Period, another with equally eminent attainments will take the opposite view and claim it does not explain all the phenomena; and, furthermore, say that it would be a great misfortune to science should this theory come to be universally accepted.
