This book was released on 1998-07-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fresh look at the phenomenon of mode conversion with tunneling. This volume provides a thorough analysis of plasma wave resonance absorption--a mode conversion process used in wave heating and diagnostics worldwide. The only book to incorporate mode conversion into a general treatment of plasma physics and plasma waves, it describes a broad range of applications and develops methods of mode conversion that are more advanced and precise than others in use today. This monograph presents the complete theory underlying the diagnostic implications of the process, combining estimates of tunneling, reflection, conversion, and absorption with emission. It surveys two decades' worth of developments in the field and: * Brings together a wealth of information previously scattered in the professional literature * Details numerous analytical and numerical results, many of which are published here for the first time * Proves the surprising result that the phenomena of tunneling and absorption are independent * Shows the link between the absorption and emission processes associated with resonances * Features dozens of illustrations, as well as an extensive bibliography and references * Appends a collection of mathematical formulas useful in plasma physics * Offers via e-mail a variety of Fortran codes covering the examples in the book. Theory of Mode Conversion and Tunneling in Inhomogeneous Plasmas is an essential reference for researchers working in plasma physics, space plasma physics, and fusion energy fields, and for anyone developing codes in plasma wave heating modeling. Its tutorial approach makes it invaluable for graduate students taking courses in plasma waves--whether in physics, electrical engineering, or nuclear engineering.
Book Synopsis Ray Tracing and Beyond by : E. R. Tracy
Download or read book Ray Tracing and Beyond written by E. R. Tracy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-02-27 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This complete introduction to the use of modern ray tracing techniques in plasma physics describes the powerful mathematical methods generally applicable to vector wave equations in non-uniform media, and clearly demonstrates the application of these methods to simplify and solve important problems in plasma wave theory. Key analytical concepts are carefully introduced as needed, encouraging the development of a visual intuition for the underlying methodology, with more advanced mathematical concepts succinctly explained in the appendices, and supporting Matlab and Raycon code available online. Covering variational principles, covariant formulations, caustics, tunnelling, mode conversion, weak dissipation, wave emission from coherent sources, incoherent wave fields, and collective wave absorption and emission, all within an accessible framework using standard plasma physics notation, this is an invaluable resource for graduate students and researchers in plasma physics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a particular angle of incidence, it is possible for an ordinary mode electromagnetic wave, incident on an inhomogeneous plasma slab, to be totally converted into extraordinary mode. Previous analysis of this process has been extended to permit arbitrary angle of incidence and to include magnetic field gradients. Although this process has recently been proposed as a method by which toroidal plasmas might be electron cyclotron heated from the outside (low magnetic field region), it was found that for plasma parameters characteristic of modern tokamaks significant mode conversion occurs only for waves incident within a very narrow cone (delta theta approximately 1/sup 0/) about the critical angle. Also addressed in this paper is the question of the location at which ordinary/extraordinary mode conversion occurs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Standard eikonal theory reduces, to N=1, the order of the system of equations underlying wave propagation in inhomogeneous plasmas. The condition for this remarkable reducibility is that only one eigenvalue of the unreduced NxN dispersion matrix D(k, x) vanishes at a time. If, however, two or more eigenvalues of D become simultaneously small, the geometric optics reduction scheme becomes singular. These regions are associated with linear mode conversion, and are described by higher order systems. A new reduction scheme based on congruent transformations of D is developed, and it is shown that, in ''degenerate'' plasma regions, a partial reduction of order is possible. The method comprises a constructive step-by-step procedure, which, in the most frequent (doubly) degenerate case, yields a second order system, describing the pairwise mode conversion problems, the solution of which in general geometry has been found recently.

Download or read book Plasma Waves written by D.G. Swanson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plasma Waves discusses the basic development and equations for the many aspects of plasma waves. The book is organized into two major parts, examining both linear and nonlinear plasma waves in the eight chapters it encompasses. After briefly discussing the properties and applications of plasma wave, the book goes on examining the wave types in a cold, magnetized plasma and the general forms of the dispersion relation that characterize the waves and label the various types of solutions. Chapters 3 and 4 analyze the acoustic phenomena through the fluid model of plasma and the kinetic effects. These chapters also describe the averaging process for the fluid element motion using expanded Boltzmann equation for each species in a velocity moment expansion, truncating the expansion at some suitable level, depending on the particular problem. The remaining four chapters discuss the effects of adding sharp boundaries, slowly varying inhomogeneities, nonlinearities at several levels, and turbulent plasmas. Supplementary texts on complex variables and the special functions in plasma physics are provided in the concluding section of this text. The book is an advanced text for graduate students who have had an introductory plasma course at some level.
