Book excerpt: The Committee on Metalworking Processes and Equipment of the Materials Advisory Board conducted an informal symposium on thin-sheet rolling on March 18, 1965, in Washington, D.C. The objective was to assist the MAB Committee in formulating recommendations to the Government through the interchange of ideas and opinions with individuals having both breadth and diversity of background and experience in the production and application of thin sheet. This report presents the texts of the four invited papers and a transcript of the discussions that followed the presentations. The four papers presented were: Refractory Metals Foil Processing A Status Report; Considerations in the Processing of Specialty Metal Foil; Engineering Application of Metal Foil; and Problems in the Application of Metal Foil. A summary of the highlights of the papers and discussion is included in this report. (Author).

Book excerpt: Primer on Flat Rolling is a fully revised second edition, and the outcome of over three decades of involvement with the rolling process. It is based on the author's yearly set of lectures, delivered to engineers and technologists working in the rolling metal industry. The essential and basic ideas involved in designing and analysis of the rolling process are presented. The book discusses and illustrates in detail the three components of flat rolling: the mill, the rolled metal, and their interface. New processes are also covered; flexible rolling and accumulative roll-bonding. The last chapter contains problems, with solutions that illustrate the complexities of flat rolling. New chapters include a study of hot rolling of aluminum, contributed by Prof. M. Wells; advanced applications of the finite element method, by Dr. Yuli Liu and by Dr. G. Krallics; roll design by Dr. J. B. Tiley and the history of the development of hot rolling mills, written by Mr. D. R. Adair and E. B. Intong. Engineers, technologists and students can all use this book to aid their planning and analysis of flat rolling processes. Provides clear descriptions for engineers and technologists working in steel mills Evaluates the predictive capabilities of mathematical models Assignments and their solutions are included within the text

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to their lightweight and high specific strength, Mg-based alloys are considered as substitutes to their heavier counterparts in applications in which corrosion is non-relevant and weight saving is of importance. Furthermore, due to the biocompatibility of Mg, some alloys with controlled corrosion rates are used as degradable implant materials in the medical sector. The typical processing route of Mg parts incorporates a casting step and, subsequently, a thermo–mechanical treatment. In order to achieve the desired macroscopic properties and thus fulfill the service requirements, thorough knowledge of the relationship between the microstructure, the processing steps, and the resulting property profile is necessary. This Special Issue covers in situ and ex situ experimental and computational investigations of the behavior under thermo–mechanical load of Mg-based alloys utilizing modern characterization and simulation techniques. The papers cover investigations on the effect of rare earth additions on the mechanical properties of different Mg alloys, including the effect of long-period stacking-ordered (LPSO) structures, and the experimental and computational investigation of the effect of different processing routes.
