Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the first English translation of Bezout's masterpiece, the General Theory of Algebraic Equations. It follows, by almost two hundred years, the English translation of his famous mathematics textbooks. Here, Bézout presents his approach to solving systems of polynomial equations in several variables and in great detail. He introduces the revolutionary notion of the "polynomial multiplier," which greatly simplifies the problem of variable elimination by reducing it to a system of linear equations. The major result presented in this work, now known as "Bézout's theorem," is stated as follows: "The degree of the final equation resulting from an arbitrary number of complete equations containing the same number of unknowns and with arbitrary degrees is equal to the product of the exponents of the degrees of these equations." The book offers large numbers of results and insights about conditions for polynomials to share a common factor, or to share a common root. It also provides a state-of-the-art analysis of the theories of integration and differentiation of functions in the late eighteenth century, as well as one of the first uses of determinants to solve systems of linear equations. Polynomial multiplier methods have become, today, one of the most promising approaches to solving complex systems of polynomial equations or inequalities, and this translation offers a valuable historic perspective on this active research field.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theory and Solution of Algebraical Equations of the Higher Orders The present work is an endeavour to exhibit a comprehensive view of the Theory and Solution of Algebraical Equations; especially in reference to that more important department of the subject, which relates to the practical analysis and computation of the roots when the coefficients of the equation are given numbers. I am not aware of the existence of any work in which so ample a discussion of the general problem of the solution of numerical equations is furnished as that which is attempted, however imperfectly, in the following pages. The main topics of this discussion are indeed but very recent contributions to science, made by different persons, at comparatively short intervals, within the last twenty or thirty years; and are as yet too imperfectly known and estimated to have become generally incorporated into our systems of analysis. But the importance of these recent additions to our knowledge, in a branch of inquiry of so much practical consequence as the solution of numerical equations, in which all existing methods were felt to be so limited and imperfect, seemed sufficient to justify even reiterated endeavours to introduce them into general notice, and to urge their claims to general adoption. Book excerpt: Blow-up for Higher-Order Parabolic, Hyperbolic, Dispersion and Schrodinger Equations shows how four types of higher-order nonlinear evolution partial differential equations (PDEs) have many commonalities through their special quasilinear degenerate representations. The authors present a unified approach to deal with these quasilinear PDEs.The book

Book excerpt: Designed for those people who want to gain a practical knowledge of modern techniques, this book contains all the material necessary for a course on the numerical solution of differential equations. Written by two of the field's leading authorities, it provides a unified presentation of initial value and boundary value problems in ODEs as well as differential-algebraic equations. The approach is aimed at a thorough understanding of the issues and methods for practical computation while avoiding an extensive theorem-proof type of exposition. It also addresses reasons why existing software succeeds or fails. This book is a practical and mathematically well-informed introduction that emphasizes basic methods and theory, issues in the use and development of mathematical software, and examples from scientific engineering applications. Topics requiring an extensive amount of mathematical development, such as symplectic methods for Hamiltonian systems, are introduced, motivated, and included in the exercises, but a complete and rigorous mathematical presentation is referenced rather than included.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1852, The Analysis and Solution of Cubic and Biquadratic Equations is a pioneering work in the field of algebra. In this book, John Radford Young provides a clear and concise introduction to the theory and solution of equations of the higher orders, building on the principles established in his earlier work, The Elements of Algebra. Young's elegant and rigorous approach to algebra has influenced generations of mathematicians and continues to be an important reference for scholars today. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Analysis and Solution of Cubic and Biquadratic Equations: Forming a Sequel to the Elements of Algebra, and an Introduction to the Theory and Solution of Equations of the Higher OrdersBy the roots of an equation we are to understand all those values, whether real or imaginary, which, when substituted for the unknown quantity in it, verify the equation; that is, which really fulfil the condition implied in the equation. In the theory to be unfolded in the subsequent chapters, we recognize determinate equations only; that is to say, equations containing but one unknown quantity. Groups of equations, in volving as many. Unknown quantities as there are distinct and independent equations, do virtually come within this theory; because every such group may be reduced, by elimination, to so many separate determinate equations, each involving but one unknown quantity. Book excerpt: The present volume comprises survey articles on various fields of Differential-Algebraic Equations (DAEs), which have widespread applications in controlled dynamical systems, especially in mechanical and electrical engineering and a strong relation to (ordinary) differential equations. The individual chapters provide reviews, presentations of the current state of research and new concepts in - Observers for DAEs - DAEs in chemical processes - Optimal control of DAEs - DAEs from a functional-analytic viewpoint - Algebraic methods for DAEs The results are presented in an accessible style, making this book suitable not only for active researchers but also for graduate students (with a good knowledge of the basic principles of DAEs) for self-study.
