Book excerpt: An up-to-date, authoritative, comprehensive look at optimization theory in uncertain environments Real-life management decisions, such as buy/sell decisions in the stock market, are almost always made in uncertain environments. Is it possible to make model decision problems to fit these circumstances? Once constructed, can these models be solved? In Uncertain Programming, Baoding Liu answers both of these questions in the affirmative and goes on to lay a solid foundation for optimization in generally uncertain environments. Uncertain Programming describes the basic concepts of mathematical programming, provides a genetic algorithm for optimization problems, and introduces the techniques of stochastic and fuzzy simulation. After examining some basic results of expected value models, the book moves on to explore chance-constrained programming with stochastic parameters and illustrate applications of chance-constrained programming models. Dr. Liu discusses dependent-chance programming in stochastic environments and extends both chance-constrained and dependent-chance programming from stochastic to fuzzy environments. He then constructs a theoretical framework for fuzzy programming with fuzzy rather than crisp decisions. This remarkable and revolutionary book: * Lays a foundation for optimization theory in uncertain environments * Provides a unifying principle for dealing with stochastic and fuzzy programming * Incorporates the most recent developments in the field * Emphasizes modeling ideas, evolutionary computation, and applications of uncertain programming Uncertain Programming is a reliable, authoritative, and eye-opening guide for researchers and engineers in operations research, management science, business management, information and systems science, and computer science.

Book excerpt: When no samples are available to estimate a probability distribution, we have to invite some domain experts to evaluate the belief degree that each event will happen. Perhaps some people think that the belief degree should be modeled by subjective probability or fuzzy set theory. However, it is usually inappropriate because both of them may lead to counterintuitive results in this case. In order to rationally deal with belief degrees, uncertainty theory was founded in 2007 and subsequently studied by many researchers. Nowadays, uncertainty theory has become a branch of axiomatic mathematics for modeling belief degrees. This is an introductory textbook on uncertainty theory, uncertain programming, uncertain statistics, uncertain risk analysis, uncertain reliability analysis, uncertain set, uncertain logic, uncertain inference, uncertain process, uncertain calculus, and uncertain differential equation. This textbook also shows applications of uncertainty theory to scheduling, logistics, networks, data mining, control, and finance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended to present the milestones in the progression of uncertain Data envelopment analysis (DEA). Chapter 1 gives some basic introduction to uncertain theories, including probability theory, credibility theory, uncertainty theory and chance theory. Chapter 2 presents a comprehensive review and discussion of basic DEA models. The stochastic DEA is introduced in Chapter 3, in which the inputs and outputs are assumed to be random variables. To obtain the probability distribution of a random variable, a lot of samples are needed to apply the statistics inference approach. Chapter 4 and 5 provide two uncertain DEA methods to evaluate the DMUs with limited or insufficient statistical data, named fuzzy DEA and uncertain DEA. In order to evaluate the DMUs in which uncertainty and randomness appear simultaneously, the hybrid DEA based on chance theory is presented in Chapter 6.

Book excerpt: The subject of this book is supply chain logistics planning optimization under multiple uncertainties, the key issue in supply chain management. Focusing on the strategic-alliance three-level supply chain, the model of supply chain logistics planning was established in terms of the market prices and the market requirements as random variables of manufactured goods with random expected value programming theory, and the hybrid intelligence algorithm solution model was designed. Aiming at the decentralized control supply chain, in which the nodes were unlimited expansion, the chance-constrained stochastic programming model was created in order to obtain optimal decision-making at a certain confidence level. In addition, the hybrid intelligence algorithm model was designed to solve the problem of supply chain logistics planning with the prices of the raw-materials supply market of the upstream enterprises and the prices of market demand for products of the downstream enterprises as random variables in the supply chain unit. Aimed at the three-stage mixed control supply chain, a logistics planning model was designed using fuzzy random programming theory with customer demand as fuzzy random variables and a hybrid intelligence algorithm solution was created. The research has significance both in theory and practice. Its theoretical significance is that the research can complement and perfect existing supply chain planning in terms of quantification. Its practical significance is that the results will guide companies in supply chain logistics planning in the uncertain environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classical data envelopment analysis (DEA) models use crisp data to measure the inputs and outputs of a given system. In cases such as manufacturing systems, production processes, service systems, etc., the inputs and outputs may be complex and difficult to measure with classical DEA models. Crisp input and output data are fundamentally indispensable in the conventional DEA models. If these models contain complex uncertain data, then they will become more important and practical for decision makers.Uncertainty in Data Envelopment Analysis introduces methods to investigate uncertain data in DEA models, providing a deeper look into two types of uncertain DEA methods, fuzzy DEA and belief degree-based uncertainty DEA, which are based on uncertain measures. These models aim to solve problems encountered by classical data analysis in cases where the inputs and outputs of systems and processes are volatile and complex, making measurement difficult. Introduces methods to deal with uncertain data in DEA models, as a source of information and a reference book for researchers and engineers Presents DEA models that can be used for evaluating the outputs of many reallife systems in social and engineering subjects Provides fresh DEA models for efficiency evaluation from the perspective of imprecise data Applies the fuzzy set and uncertainty theories to DEA to produce a new method of dealing with the empirical data
