Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study considers the instabilities that result when an electron beam is injected into a plasma. A number of different models of the system are considered, and all instabilities are classified according to whether they are convective instabilities (amplifying waves) or nonconvective (absolute) instabilities. The study also analyzes the instabilities in unbounded beam-plasma systems and in systems of finite extent transverse to the electron stream and gives a detailed consideration of the possibility of a strong interaction with the ions in a hot-electron plasma. In addition, the author presents mathematical criteria for identifying absolute instabilities and amplifying waves. These criteria are based only on an analysis of the dispersion equation of the system and are not restricted to beam-plasma systems. Two things need to be said about this book: the chapter on absolute and convective instabilities makes an important contribution to the field. Second, it should be pointed out that the theoretical results are reduced to a form which make them readily available to an experimentalist. Plasma physicists and electronic engineers will be interested in this work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains information on scientific research and applications of a very diverse field of low temperature plasma physics – the interaction of electron beams with plasma and, as a consequence of this interaction, a beam plasma discharge. It contains detailed descriptions of the history of the relevant research, a review of experimental research of properties of the low-temperature plasma with an electron beam and beam plasma discharge, and presents the main results of beam plasma interaction theory. Most of the book is devoted to descriptions of applications of the plasma with a beam and beam plasma discharge in a variety of fields; from studies of the physics of near-Earth space using active geophysical experiments to the development of materials technologies for micro- and nanoelectronics and designs of plasma-filled electronic devices. This book will be useful as an introduction to this field for undergraduate and graduate students specializing in plasma physics, as well as for other specialists in various fields of physics and technologies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is twofold: to provide an introduction for newcomers to state of the art computer simulation techniques in space plasma physics and an overview of current developments. Computer simulation has reached a stage where it can be a highly useful tool for guiding theory and for making predictions of space plasma phenomena, ranging from microscopic to global scales. The various articles are arranged, as much as possible, according to the - derlying simulation technique, starting with the technique that makes the least number of assumptions: a fully kinetic approach which solves the coupled set of Maxwell’s equations for the electromagnetic ?eld and the equations of motion for a very large number of charged particles (electrons and ions) in this ?eld. Clearly, this is also the computationally most demanding model. Therefore, even with present day high performance computers, it is the most restrictive in terms of the space and time domain and the range of particle parameters that can be covered by the simulation experiments. It still makes sense, therefore, to also use models, which due to their simp- fying assumptions, seem less realistic, although the e?ect of these assumptions on the outcome of the simulation experiments needs to be carefully assessed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical model based on the linearization of the fluid equations and Maxwell's equations for wave interaction in a uniform plasma which is interpenetrated by a nonrelativistic electron beam is developed. The effects of electron-neutral and electron-ion collisions and temperatures of both the beam and plasma electrons are included and no quasi-static approximation is made for the electromagnetic field. An external d.c. magnetic field is assumed to act so that a general formulation is developed which is valid in the limit of small d.c. magnetic fields and in the limit as the field becomes very large. Graphs of the computer solutions are given for the propagation constants in a beam-plasma system for the cases of an unbounded system and for the TM wave solutions that may exist in an axisymmetric cylindrical system in which the finite beam interpenetrates an unbounded plasma. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents fundamentals of plasma physics with rich references and computational techniques in a concise manner. It particularly focuses on introductions to numerical simulation methods in plasma physics, in addition to those to physics and mathematics in plasma physics. It also presents the fundamentals of numerical methods, which solve mathematical models of plasmas, together with examples of numerical results. A discretization method, the so-called finite difference method, is introduced for particle-in-cell methods and fluid codes, which have been widely employed in plasma physics studies. In addition to the introduction to numerical solutions, it also covers numerical stability. The instabilities and numerical errors significantly influence the results, and for correct results, great efforts are required to avoid such numerical artifacts. The book also carefully discusses the numerical errors, numerical stability, and uncertainty in numerical computations. Readers are expected to have an understanding of fundamental physics of mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, statistical physics, relativity, fluid dynamics, and mathematics, but the book does not assume background knowledge on plasma. Therefore, it is a first book of plasma physics for upper undergraduate and early graduate students who are interested in learning it.

Book excerpt: A 36-month program to study the linear relativistic electron beam-plasma interaction is proposed. This program is part of a joint proposal between the Physics International Company (PI) and Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (LASL) that combines the advanced electron beam generator technology at PI with the highly developed computer simulation technology at LASL. The proposed LASL program includes direct support for 1- and 3-m beam-plasma interaction experiments planned at PI and development of theory relevant for design of a 10-m proof-of-principle electron beam-driven linear solenoidal reactor.

Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the non-linear theory of the collective interaction between a modulated beam of relativistic charged particles and narrow electromagnetic and Langmuir wave packets in plasma or gas slow-wave systems. Regular oscillations excited by a relativistic beam under the conditions of Cherenkov resonance and the anomalous Doppler effect can be used to generate coherent microwave radiation and accelerate charged particles in plasma.
