Manuscripts of the invited talks presented at this conference are the contents of this volume. These manuscripts were prepared and delivered to the editors by the authors; the responsibility for any errors in scientific con tent is theirs. While we, the editors, have made every effort to keep this volume as free from typographical errors as possible, we accept responsibility for such errors as do occur, even those which may be mistaken for scientific error. All but one of the invited talks given at the conference are reported here; those authors apparently felt unable to provide the editors with manuscripts. It is likely that in the future further developments will take place in this field of basic science.The Hispalensis International School is a summer school aimed mainly at young physicists, both theoreticians and experimentalists, engaged in research work at the predoctoral or recent postdoctoral level. This volume contains the scientific presentations given at that meeting. This series of workshops originated in Laramie in 1981, where the first three of what were to become annual workshops were held. The fourth meeting was held in Calgary. the fifth in Laramie, the sixth and seventh in Seattle, the eighth in Cambridge, England, and the ninth at Hanover, New Hampshire.
