Book excerpt: Scope and Purpose Although conductors based on the Al5 intermetallic compound Nb Sn 3 possess desirable high-field superconducting properties, manufacturing and handling difficulties, coupled with the tendency of their critical current densities to degrade rapidly under stress, have generally restricted their use to fairly straightforward, usually small-scale solenoidal-magnet applica tions. Likewise the Al5 compound VGa, which has a wider critical strain 3 window than NbSn but a uniformly lower upper critical field, has not 3 entered widespread service. Strain has been found to have no measurable influence on either the critical fields or the critical current densities of compound superconductors with BI and Cl5 crystal structures, but as yet they are still in the research and development stages. On the other hand, conductors using the binary alloy Ti-Nb or multi component alloys based on it, because of their relative ease of manufacture, excellent mechanical properties, and relatively low strain sensitivities, are now being pressed into service in numerous large-scale devices. Such conductors are being wound into magnets for use in energy storage, energy conversion (i. e. , generators and motors), and high-energy particle detectors and beam-handling magnets. of cold-rolled or drawn Ti-Nb-alloy wire for superconducting The use magnet applications was first proposed in 1961. During the ensuing ten years, while progress was being made in the development of Cu-clad filamentary-Ti-Nb-alloy conductors, Ti-Nb and other Ti-base binary transi tion-metal (TM) alloys were being employed as model systems in the fundamental study of type-II superconductivity.

Book excerpt: Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage of progress in the major areas of chemical research. Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 80 years the Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued. The current list of Specialist Periodical Reports can be seen on the inside flap of this volume.

Book excerpt: This research book covers the major aspects relating to the use of novel delivery systems in enhancing both transdermal and intradermal drug delivery. It provides a review of transdermal and intradermal drug delivery, including the history of the field and the various methods employed to produce delivery systems from different materials such as device design, construction and evaluation, so as to provide a sound background to the use of novel systems in enhanced delivery applications. Furthermore, it presents in-depth analyses of recent developments in this exponentially growing field, with a focus on microneedle arrays, needle-free injections, nanoparticulate systems and peptide-carrier-type systems. It also covers conventional physical enhancement strategies, such as tape-stripping, sonophoresis, iontophoresis, electroporation and thermal/suction/laser ablation Discussions about the penetration of the stratum corneum by the various novel strategies highlight the importance of the application method. Comprehensive and critical reviews of transdermal and intradermal delivery research using such systems focus on the outcomes of in vivoanimal and human studies. The book includes laboratory, clinical and commercial case studies featuring safety and patient acceptability studies carried out to date, and depicts a growing area for use of these novel systems is in intradermal vaccine delivery. The final chapters review recent patents in this field and describe the work ongoing in industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors provide an excellent overview of conjugation effects in organic chemistry within and between Pi systems. Besides various aspects of aromaticity one finds detailed discussions of homo-, spiroand hyperconjugation as well as effects of through-space and throughbond interactions. These effects are presented on the basis of experimental results and are analyzed by the use of qualitative arguments of perturbation theory and from a comparison with results from high level ab initio calculations. This book is a must-have for bachelor students from the second year on, master and PhD students of chemistry. Also students in science such as physics, biology and medicine will benefit from the concepts described in the book. Furthermore, chemists in research and development will be grateful to find here an overview of conjugation effects allowing to understand the structures, the dynamics and the reactivity of molecules.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applications of MO Theory in Organic Chemistry is a documentation of the proceedings of the First Theoretical Organic Chemistry meeting. This text is divided into five sections. Section A contains contributions ranging from the stereochemistry of stable molecules, radicals, and molecular ions, through hydrogen bonding and ion solvation to mathematical analyses of energy hypersurfaces. Section B deals with theoretical studies of organic reactions, including basecatalyzed hydrolysis, protonation, epoxidation, and electrophilic addition to double and triple bonds. Section C consists of topics starting with a qualitative configuration interaction treatment of thermal and photochemical organic reactions, followed by ab initio treatments of photochemical intermediates and a consideration of the role of Rydberg and valence-shell states in photochemistry. Section D provides analyses of methods for the determination and characterization of localized MO and discussions of correlated electron pair functions. Section E covers a very wide range from the application of statistical physics to the treatment of molecular interactions with their environments to a challenge to theoretical organic chemists in the field of natural products, and an introduction to information theory in organic chemistry. This book is a good source of information for students and researchers conducting study on the many areas in theoretical organic chemistry.

This volume records a representative slection of the papers delivered at the second European Workshop on Quantum Systems in Chemistry and Physics which was held at Jesus College, Oxford, April 6-9, 1997. The purpose of this international Workshop was to bring together chemists and physicists with a common interest--the quantum mechanical many-body problem--and to encourage collaboration and exchange of ideas on the fundamentals by promoting innovative theory and conceptual development rather than improvements in computatorial techniques and routine applications. - Covers the following topics: - Density matrices and density functional theory - Electron correlation - Relativistic effects - Valence theory - Nuclear motion - Response theory - Condensed matter - Chemical reactions

Book excerpt: Application of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy in Organic Chemistry, Second Edition covers the theoretical background necessary for the intelligent application of NMR spectroscopy to common problems encountered in organic chemistry. This book is composed of five parts, and begins with introduction to the theory and practice of nuclear magnetic resonance. The succeeding chapter deals with the theory of chemical effects in NMR spectroscopy. These topics are followed by a discussion on the application of chemical shift to organic compound analysis and the principles of the spin-spin coupling .The final chapter considers the applications of time- dependent phenomena in NMR spectroscopy. This book will prove useful to analytical chemists and researchers in the allied fields.
