Book excerpt: LES SYSTEMES DE SPINS DE HEISENBERG ANTIFERROMAGNETIQUES FRUSTRES ET NON-FRUSTRES SONT ETUDIES AU MOYEN DES METHODES DE LA THEORIE QUANTIQUE DES CHAMPS ET DU GROUPE DE RENORMALISATION. DANS LE CAS DE SPINS QUANTIQUES BIDIMENSIONNELS, LE PHENOMENE DE BRISURE SPONTANEE DE SYMETRIE A TEMPERATURE NULLE EST ANALYSEE EN UTILISANT UN MODELE SIGMA NON-LINEAIRE, DANS SA FORMULATION HAMILTONIENNE ET LAGRANGIENNE. AUTOUR DE CETTE ETUDE, DES CRITERES D'EXISTENCE D'ORDRE A LONGUE DISTANCE DANS L'ETAT FONDAMENTAL DE SYSTEMES DE SPINS FRUSTRES SONT OBTENUS. ILS CONSISTENT, D'UNE PART, EN DES PREDICTIONS SUR LE SPECTRE DE BASSE ENERGIE DU SYSTEME A TAILLE FINIE ET A TEMPERATURE NULLE QUI DOIT ETRE OBSERVE LORSQU'IL Y A BRISURE DE SYMETRIE DANS LA LIMITE THERMODYNAMIQUE ; D'AUTRE PART, DANS L'EXPRESSION DE LA LONGUEUR DE CORRELATION EN FONCTION DE LA TEMPERATURE DES SYSTEMES DE SPINS FRUSTRES, DANS UN REGIME DE PARAMETRES TELS QU'IL EXISTE DE L'ORDRE A TEMPERATURE NULLE. DANS LE CAS DE SPINS FRUSTRES CLASSIQUES, LE PROBLEME DE L'UNIVERSALITE DE LA TRANSITION DE PHASE TRIDIMENSIONNELLE A TEMPERATURE FINIE EST ENVISAGE. DIFFERENTES APPROCHES THEORIQUES SONT PRESENTEES ET COMPAREES: MODELE SIGMA NON-LINEAIRE, MODELE DE LANDAU-GINZBURG-WILSON. EN DEUX DIMENSIONS, L'EXISTENCE D'UNE TOPOLOGIE NON-TRIVIALE DANS LES SYSTEMES DE SPINS FRUSTRES EST A LA BASE D'UN PHENOMENE DE DECONFINEMENT DE VORTEX. LA VALIDITE DE LA THEORIE DE PERTURBATION BASSE TEMPERATURE EST ANALYSEE

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the rapidly developing field of oxide thin-films and heterostructures. Oxide materials combined with atomic-scale precision in a heterostructure exhibit an abundance of macroscopic physical properties involving the strong coupling between the electronic, spin, and structural degrees of freedom, and the interplay between magnetism, ferroelectricity, and conductivity. Recent advances in thin-film deposition and characterization techniques made possible the experimental realization of such oxide heterostructures, promising novel functionalities and device concepts. The book consists of chapters on some of the key innovations in the field over recent years, including strongly correlated oxide heterostructures, magnetoelectric coupling and multiferroic materials, thermoelectric phenomena, and two-dimensional electron gases at oxide interfaces. The book covers the core principles, describes experimental approaches to fabricate and characterize oxide heterostructures, demonstrates new functional properties of these materials, and provides an overview of novel applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This graduate-level text develops the aspects of group theory most relevant to physics and chemistry (such as the theory of representations) and illustrates their applications to quantum mechanics. The first five chapters focus chiefly on the introduction of methods, illustrated by physical examples, and the final three chapters offer a systematic treatment of the quantum theory of atoms, molecules, and solids. The formal theory of finite groups and their representation is developed in Chapters 1 through 4 and illustrated by examples from the crystallographic point groups basic to solid-state and molecular theory. Chapter 5 is devoted to the theory of systems with full rotational symmetry, Chapter 6 to the systematic presentation of atomic structure, and Chapter 7 to molecular quantum mechanics. Chapter 8, which deals with solid-state physics, treats electronic energy band theory and magnetic crystal symmetry. A compact and worthwhile compilation of the scattered material on standard methods, this volume presumes a basic understanding of quantum theory.

Book excerpt: This book is an outcome of the International Workshop on Electronic Density Functional Theory, held at Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia, in July 1996. Density functional theory, standing as it does at the boundary between the disciplines of physics, chemistry, and materials science, is a great mixer. Invited experts from North America, Europe, and Australia mingled with students from several disciplines, rapidly taking up the informal style for which Australia is famous. A list of participants is given at the end of the book. Density functional theory (DFT) is a subtle approach to the very difficult problem of predicting the behavior of many interacting particles. A major application is the study of many-electron systems. This was the workshop theme, embracing inter alia computational chemistry and condensed matter physics. DFT circumvents the more conceptually straightforward (but more computationally intensive) approach in which one solves the many-body Schrodinger equation. It relies instead on rather delicate considerations involving the electron number density. For many years the pioneering work of Kohn and Sham (the Local Density Ap proximation of 1965 and immediate extensions) represented the state of the art in DFT. This approach was widely used for its appealing simplicity and computability, but gave rather modest accuracy. In the last few years there has been a renaissance of interest, quite largely due to the remarkable success of the new generation of gradient functionals whose initiators include invitees to the workshop (Perdew, Parr, Yang).

Book excerpt: The rapid development of quantum technologies has driven a revolution in related research areas such as quantum computation and communication, and quantum materials. The first prototypes of functional quantum devices are beginning to appear, frequently created using ensembles of atoms, which allow the observation of sensitive, quantum effects, and have important applications in quantum simulation and matter wave interferometry. This modern text offers a self-contained introduction to the fundamentals of quantum atom optics and atomic many-body matter wave systems. Assuming a familiarity with undergraduate quantum mechanics, this book will be accessible for graduate students and early career researchers moving into this important new field. A detailed description of the underlying theory of quantum atom optics is given, before development of the key, quantum, technological applications, such as atom interferometry, quantum simulation, quantum metrology, and quantum computing.

Chirality in Natural and Applied Science provides a highly practical overview of the chemical significance of chirality and is particularly relevant for pharmaceutical, natural product, organic and analytical chemists, biochemists and molecular biologists. The book describes the current understanding of all issues relating to chirality, and appraises its impact on much of modern molecular science. It covers the natural occurrence of chirality on a variety of scales, and applications in research and industry. By bringing together the experience of a number of contributors who have played an influential role on the direction of research in this area, the text is well placed to explain the most important insights, developments and applications that have taken place. Chirality will remain a central part of the understanding of all molecular scientists, and there is little doubt that its importance will increase. This book will ensure the reader has a thorough understanding of chirality, its importance and its application
