Book Synopsis The Beginnings of Piezoelectricity by : Shaul Katzir
Download or read book The Beginnings of Piezoelectricity written by Shaul Katzir and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-04-08 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Beginnings of Piezoelectricity, the first history of the subject, exhaustively examines how diverse influences led to the discovery of the phenomenon in 1880, and how they shaped subsequent research until the consolidation of an empirical and theoretical knowledge of the field circa 1895. Shaul Katzir’s historical account shows that this ‘mundane’ science was an intriguing intellectual and practical enterprise, which involved originality, surprises and controversies.
Book Synopsis Uneasy Genius: The Life And Work Of Pierre Duhem by : St.L. Jaki
Download or read book Uneasy Genius: The Life And Work Of Pierre Duhem written by St.L. Jaki and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A hundred years have now gone by since in the midsummer of 1882 Pierre Duhem, a graduate of College Stanislas, completed with brilliant success his entrance exams to the Ecole Normale Superieure and embarked on his career as a theoretical physicist. His father, a textile salesman, hoped that Hierre would pursue a career in business, one of the few professional fields where perhaps he would not have succeeded. Not that young Duhem lacked sense for the practical. He could have easily made a name for himself as an artist had he developed professionally his skill to draw portraits and landscapes. His ability to make a point and his readiness to join in a debate, could have earned him fame as a lawyer. A potential actor was in sight when he entertained friends with mimicry. That as a student of physics he entered and stayed first in his class at the Ecole Normale, did not thwart his talents for the life sciences. No less a biologist than Pasteur tried to obtain Duhem for assistant. His command of Greek and Latin would have secured him a career as a classicist. He was a Frenchman, not to be met too often, whose rightful ad miration for and mastery of his native tongue, did not prove a barrier to the major modern languages. As one who taught himself the complex art of medieval paleo graphy, he could easily have mastered the many auxiliary sciences needed by a consummate historian.

Download or read book Collected Papers written by H. A. Lorenz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-09 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume in its first part reproduces the treatises and papers wherein Professor H.A. Lorentz developed the electromagnetic theory of phenomena in moving systems up to the point achieved in the relativity theory of uniform translations. We have not included the article in the Encyclopaedie der mathematischen Wissenschaften, Vol. V, number I4, nor the book "Theory of Electrons", for reasons given previously. The second part of the volume contains the work on the theory ot gravitation. In the early development of the theory the author lays stress on the hypothesis of the stagnant ether, and he so firmly believes in the validity of his formula for the ponderomotive force on electric charges, that he is even prepared to abandon the momentum conservation law (see p. 28). It was Max Abraham who in I903 reconciled Lorentz's formula for the force with the conservation law by interpreting the term at fault as the representation of electromagnetic momentum per unit volume of the field, thus meeting the criticism of Henri Poincare. This interpretation was readily taken over by Lorentz. Again, referring to the transformation formula tor the time variable, Professor Lorentz preferred to think 0/ "local time" as a mathematical auxiliary. A dmitting and even stressing the impossibility of discrimin ating experimentally between local time and absolute time, he never relinquished the belief that the latter words might have a meaning after all.

Book Synopsis Elements of Early Modern Physics by : J. L. Heilbron
Download or read book Elements of Early Modern Physics written by J. L. Heilbron and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2024-03-29 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elements of Early Modern Physics comprises the two long introductory chapters of J. L. Heilbron's monumental work Electricity in the 17th and 18th Centuries: A Study of Early Modern Physics plus a concluding summary of the remaining chapters. Heilbron opens with a presentation of the general principles of physical theory and a description of the institutional frameworks in which physics were cultivated in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. He argues that the single most important contributor to physics in the seventeenth century was the Catholic Church. In the first half of the eighteenth century, Cartesian and Newtonian physicists disagreed over principles but thought in similar terms and cultivated the same sort of qualitative natural philosophy. Work towards an exact physics, which took on important dimensions after 1770, confounded the programs of both. Heilbron shows that by attending too closely to the Copernican revolution and the confrontation of great philosophical systems, historians have seriously misjudged the character of early modern science. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1982.

Book Synopsis When Historiography Met Epistemology by : Stefano Bordoni
Download or read book When Historiography Met Epistemology written by Stefano Bordoni and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-03-06 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In When Historiography Met Epistemology, Stefano Bordoni shows the emergence of sophisticated histories and philosophies of science in French speaking countries in the second half of the nineteenth century. That process involved mathematicians, scientists, and philosophers, and was deeply linked to other processes that transformed the cultural and material landscape of Europe. In the literature, the emergence of the history and philosophy of science is chronologically associated with the turn of the twentieth century: the author points out that this meaningful starting point should be moved backwards. Since the 1860s, sophisticated histories of science and critical meta-theoretical remarks on scientific practice began to compete with naïve historical reconstructions and dogmatic views on science.
Download or read book Collected Papers written by H. A. Lorentz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the present ninth volume we bring to a conclusion the edition of the Collected Papers of Professor H.A. Lorentz. It contains the evidence of his constant activity to promote the interest in science of a larger public, in particular of his country men, by addresses on se veraloccasions, by articles in magazines and newspapers, and other wise. In a certain way in this part of his work he belongs more partic ularly to his country, therefore we reproduce it in the original lang uage, with the exception of his inaugural address as Leiden professor early in I878, which readers abroad might be interested in. The sketch of Ludwig Boltzmann, in the German language, contains a most powerful and deep-going survey of the scientific work of this genius. In several places the character of the man's personality rather than that 0/ the scientist reveals itself, his attitude towards various problems and his personal views. In his first address he refers to the value of mathematics, we hear his dislike lor too vivid visual speculations and crude hypotheses, his taste lor the soberness of mathematical formulae, where he argues that the fundamental principles must needs escape further explanation. On page 54 we read what he said about determin ism, and on page I8I he expresses himself on the relation of matter and mind. His intimate feelings on space and time, and the aether, are touched upon on pages 240, 26I, 274.
