Book Synopsis The Kinetic Theory of Gases by : Leonard B. Loeb
Download or read book The Kinetic Theory of Gases written by Leonard B. Loeb and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 746 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pioneering text in its field, this comprehensive study is one of the most valuable texts and references available. The author explores the classical kinetic theory in the first four chapters, with discussions of the mechanical picture of a perfect gas, the mean free path, and the distribution of molecular velocities. Tbhe fifth chapter deals with the more accurate equations of state, or Van der Waals' equation, and later chapters examine viscosity, heat conduction, surface phenomena, and Browninan movements. The text surveys the application of quantum theory to the problem of specific heats and the contributions of kinetic theory to knowledge of electrical and magnetic properties of molecules, concluding with applications of the kinetic theory to the conduction of electricity in gases. 1934 edition.

Book excerpt: Kinetic Theory, Volume 3: The Chapman-Enskog Solution of the Transport Equation for Moderately Dense Gases describes the Chapman-Enskog solution of the transport equation for moderately dense gases. Topics covered range from the propagation of sound in monatomic gases to the kinetic theory of simple and composite monatomic gases and generalizations of the theory to higher densities. The application of kinetic theory to the determination of intermolecular forces is also discussed. This volume is divided into two sections and begins with an introduction to the work of Hilbert, Chapman, and Enskog that led to the formulation of the Chapman-Enskog theory. The Chapman-Enskog results are then compared with those of earlier theories with respect to viscosity, heat conduction, diffusion, and thermal diffusion. Subsequent chapters focus on alternatives to the Chapman-Enskog method and some mathematical problems; foundations of the kinetic theory of gases; and kinetic theory of processes in dilute gases and of heat conduction, viscosity, and self-diffusion in compressed gases and liquids. This book should be of interest to graduate students and others undertaking research in kinetic theory.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the symposium held on Friday 6 July 1990 at the University Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris VI), France, in honor of Professor Henri Cabannes on the occasion of his retirement. There were about one hundred participants from nine countries: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Norway, Portugal, the Netherlands, and the USA. Many of his past students or his colleagues were among the participants. The twenty-six papers in this volume are written versions submitted by the authors and cover almost all the fields in which Professor Cabannes has actively worked for more than forty-five years. The papers are presented in four chapters: classical kinetic theory and fluid dynamics, discrete kinetic theory, applied fluid mechanics, and continuum mechanics. The editors would like to take this opportunity to thank the generous spon sors of the symposium: the University Pierre et Marie Curie, Commissariat a l'Energie Atomique (especially Academician R. Dautray and Dr. N. Camarcat) and Direction des Recherches et Etudes Techniques (especially Professor P. Lallemand). Many thanks are also due to all the participants for making the symposium a success. Finally, we thank Professor W. Beiglbock and his team at Springer-Verlag for producing this volume.
Book Synopsis The Cauchy Problem in Kinetic Theory by : Robert T. Glassey
Download or read book The Cauchy Problem in Kinetic Theory written by Robert T. Glassey and published by SIAM. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume studies the basic equations of kinetic theory in all of space. It contains up-to-date, state-of-the-art treatments of initial-value problems for the major kinetic equations, including the Boltzmann equation (from rarefied gas dynamics) and the Vlasov-Poisson/Vlasov-Maxwell systems (from plasma physics). This is the only existing book to treat Boltzmann-type problems and Vlasov-type problems together. Although these equations describe very different phenomena, they share the same streaming term. The author proves that solutions starting from a given configuration at an initial time exist for all future times by imposing appropriate hypotheses on the initial values in several important cases. He emphasizes those questions that a mathematician would ask first: Is there a solution to this problem? Is it unique? Can it be numerically approximated? The topics treated include the study of the Boltzmann collision operator, the study of the initial-value problem for the Boltzmann equation with "small" and "near equilibrium" data, global smooth solvability of the initial-value problem for the Vlasov-Poisson system with smooth initial data of unrestricted size, conditions under which the initial-value problem for the Vlasov-Maxwell system has global-in-time solutions (in both the smooth and weak senses), and more.
Book Synopsis Advances in Aeronautical Sciences by : Th. Von Kármán
Download or read book Advances in Aeronautical Sciences written by Th. Von Kármán and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-15 with total page 621 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Aeronautical Sciences, Volume 3 contains the proceedings of the Second International Congress in the Aeronautical Sciences held in Zurich, Switzerland, on September 12-16, 1960. The papers explore advances in aeronautical sciences and cover topics ranging from the role of entropy in the aerospace sciences to the theory of hypersonic flow over blunt-nosed slender bodies. The effect of boundary layer transition at the leading edge of thin wings on general nose separation is also discussed, along with the aerodynamics of aircraft shapes for flight at supersonic speeds. This book is comprised of 28 chapters and begins with a review of the importance of entropy in the aerospace sciences, citing the work of Nicolaus Sadi Carnot and Rudolf Clausius as well as enthalpy and free enthalpy. The link between entropy and molecular theory is also described before turning to the physics of jet streams and the aerodynamics of jet flaps. Other chapters consider a wide range of problems both of theoretical and practical importance, including the flow around a circular cylinder; the theory of boundary layer; the physics of transition from laminar to turbulent flow; and the theory and experimental knowledge of transonic, supersonic, and hypersonic flows. Due attention is given to the re-entry of missiles and space vehicles into the atmosphere; problems of trajectories; guidance of space vehicles; and power generation in space. The economic and technical aspects of air transportation are also highlighted. This volume will be of interest to scientists and engineers in aeronautics and astronautics.

Book Synopsis Kinetic Theory Of Gases, The: An Anthology Of Classic Papers With Historical Commentary by : Stephen G Brush
Download or read book Kinetic Theory Of Gases, The: An Anthology Of Classic Papers With Historical Commentary written by Stephen G Brush and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2003-07-28 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces physics students and teachers to the historical development of the kinetic theory of gases, by providing a collection of the most important contributions by Clausius, Maxwell and Boltzmann, with introductory surveys explaining their significance. In addition, extracts from the works of Boyle, Newton, Mayer, Joule, Helmholtz, Kelvin and others show the historical context of ideas about gases, energy and irreversibility. In addition to five thematic essays connecting the classical kinetic theory with 20th century topics such as indeterminism and interatomic forces, there is an extensive international bibliography of historical commentaries on kinetic theory, thermodynamics, etc. published in the past four decades. The book will be useful to historians of science who need primary and secondary sources to be conveniently available for their own research and interpretation, along with the bibliography which makes it easier to learn what other historians have already done on this subject.
