Eine Sichtung der letzten 15-20 Jahre lässt erkennen, dass eine Dokumentation der Probleme von Migrantinnen und deren Lösungsversuche erst den Anfang von Veröffentlichungen bildet. Ende der 90er Jahre zeigte die Literatur erstmals auch Bestand und Weiterentwicklungstendenzen statt bloße Problemdarstellungs- und -lösungsliteratur. Es scheint, als sei mittlerweile alles aufgezeigt, was Migrantinnen (in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland) das Leben schwer macht. Ob sich dadurch aber wirklich ihre eigene Lebenssituation verbessert hat das sei dahingestellt. 'Migration' und 'Integration' sind nicht nur ganz aktuelle und politisch sehr brisante Schlüsselbegriffe unserer gegenwärtigen gesellschaftlichen Debatte, sondern auch historische Phänomene, die kaum einen anderen europäischen Raum so geprägt haben wie das Gebiet, das die frühere Bundesrepublik Deutschland von 1949 bis 1990 umfasst. Erst seitdem ein Großteil der erwerbstätigen Ausländer und Ausländerinnen immer häufiger beschließt, für immer in ihrer Wahlheimat zu bleiben, wird sich mit dem Problem der älteren Migranten und Migrantinnen näher befasst. Auch wenn die meisten Migrantinnen und Migranten der ersten Generation immer in ihren Gedanken einen gepackten Koffer zur Rückkehr bereit halten, kehren sie nur selten in ihr Herkunftsland zurück. Die Arbeit soll dazu beitragen, kulturelle und nationale Identitäten von Migrantinnen zu respektieren und die eigene Einstellung nicht von bedingungsloser nationaler Assimilation abhängig zu machen. Ziel der Arbeit ist aufzuzeigen, welchen Anteil und welchen Wert die Integration, deren mögliche Definition im Folgenden gegeben wird, im Leben von Migrantinnen der ersten Generation einnimmt. Zuvor wird ein Überblick über die Migrationsgeschichte, Charakteristika von älteren Migrantinnen und Migranten und Integrationstheorien gegeben. Diese Überlegungen zielen insbesondere darauf ab, verschiedene Problem- und Konfliktlagen von Migrantinnen und Migranten der ersten Generation aufzuzeigen. Die theoretischen Erkenntnisse sollen anhand von vier ausgewählten Interviews, die im Rahmen des Projektes Biografien und Lebenserfahrungen von Migrantinnen der ersten Generation geführt wurden, empirisch überprüft werden. Whereas in most countries citizenship attribution is regulated at the central level of the state, in Switzerland each municipality is accorded the right to decide who can become a Swiss citizen. This book aims at exploring naturalization processes from a comparative perspective and to explain why some municipalities pursue more restrictive citizenship policies than others. The Swiss case provides a unique opportunity to approach citizenship politics from new perspectives. It allows us to go beyond formal citizenship models and to account for the practice of citizenship. The analytical framework combines quantitative and qualitative data and helps us understand how negotiation processes between political actors lead to a large variety of local citizenship models. Given Germany’s varied immigration experience with refugees, asylum seekers, guest workers, and foreign-born persons of German ancestry, Dr. Milewski’s topic is of particular interest, especially with regard to differences in the patterns and levels of childbearing among various kinds of immigrants to Germany vs. native-born Germans. Numerous empirical and theoretical studies of childbearing among immigrants to various countries have been published and Dr. Milewski carefully reviews them. Based on original research, it looks at the racialisation of paid domestic labour in the North - a phenomenon which challenges feminsim and political theory at a fundamental level. The book opens with an exploration of the public/private divide and an overview of the debates on women and power. The book also looks at the role of the Other in managing dirt, death and pollution and the effects of the feminisation of the labour market - as middle class white women have greater presence in the public sphere, they are more likely to push responsibility for domestic work onto other women. In its depiction of the treatment of women from the South by women in the North, the book asks some difficult questions about the common bond of womanhood. Packed with information on the numbers of migrant women working as domestics, the racism, immigration or employment legislation that constrains their lives, and testimonies from the workers themselves, this is the most comprehensive study of migrant domestic workers available.
