Book Synopsis Surfaces and Interfaces of Solids by : Hans Lüth
Download or read book Surfaces and Interfaces of Solids written by Hans Lüth and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Surfaces and Interfaces of Solids" emphasizes both experimental and theoretical aspects of surface and interface physics. Beside the techniques of preparing well-defined solid surfaces and interfaces basic models for the description of structural, vibronic and electronic properties ofinterfaces are described, as well as fundamental aspects of adsorption and layer growth. Because of its importance for modern microelectronics special emphasis is placed on the electronic properties of semiconductorinterfaces and heterostructures. Experimental topics covering the basics of ultrahigh-vacuum technology, electron optics, surface spectroscopies and electrical interface characterization techniques are presented in the form of separate panels.

Book excerpt: Half-metals are particular ferromagnetic materials which can be considered as hybrids between metals and semiconductors. A particular feature of these materials is that electrons at the Fermi level show complete spin polarization making them prime targets for research into suitable divices for spin electronics. This book is both an introduction and state-of-art survey of the latest advances in the understanding and applications of Heusler alloys and related compounds.

Book Synopsis Electronic Density Functional Theory by : John F. Dobson
Download or read book Electronic Density Functional Theory written by John F. Dobson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an outcome of the International Workshop on Electronic Density Functional Theory, held at Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia, in July 1996. Density functional theory, standing as it does at the boundary between the disciplines of physics, chemistry, and materials science, is a great mixer. Invited experts from North America, Europe, and Australia mingled with students from several disciplines, rapidly taking up the informal style for which Australia is famous. A list of participants is given at the end of the book. Density functional theory (DFT) is a subtle approach to the very difficult problem of predicting the behavior of many interacting particles. A major application is the study of many-electron systems. This was the workshop theme, embracing inter alia computational chemistry and condensed matter physics. DFT circumvents the more conceptually straightforward (but more computationally intensive) approach in which one solves the many-body Schrodinger equation. It relies instead on rather delicate considerations involving the electron number density. For many years the pioneering work of Kohn and Sham (the Local Density Ap proximation of 1965 and immediate extensions) represented the state of the art in DFT. This approach was widely used for its appealing simplicity and computability, but gave rather modest accuracy. In the last few years there has been a renaissance of interest, quite largely due to the remarkable success of the new generation of gradient functionals whose initiators include invitees to the workshop (Perdew, Parr, Yang).

Book Synopsis Physics of Surfaces and Interfaces by : Harald Ibach
Download or read book Physics of Surfaces and Interfaces written by Harald Ibach and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-11-18 with total page 653 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This graduate-level textbook covers the major developments in surface sciences of recent decades, from experimental tricks and basic techniques to the latest experimental methods and theoretical understanding. It is unique in its attempt to treat the physics of surfaces, thin films and interfaces, surface chemistry, thermodynamics, statistical physics and the physics of the solid/electrolyte interface in an integral manner, rather than in separate compartments. It is designed as a handbook for the researcher as well as a study-text for graduate students. Written explanations are supported by 350 graphs and illustrations.
