Book excerpt: Theoretical and experimental work on solids with low-dimensi onal cooperative phenomena has been rather explosively expanded in the last few years, and it seems to be quite fashionable to con tribute to this field, especially to the problem of one-dimensional metals. On the whole, one could divide the huge amount of recent investigations into two parts although there is much overlap bet ween these regimes, namely investigations on magnetic exchange interactions constrained to mainly one or two dimensions and, secondly, work done on Id metallic solids or linear chain compounds with Id delocalized electrons. There is, of course, overlap from one extreme case to the other with these solids and in some rare cases both phenomena are studied on one and the same crystal. In fact, however, most of the scientific groups in this area could be associated roughly with one of these categories and,in addition, a separation between theoreticians and experimentalists in each of these groups leads to a further splitting of interests although many theories about these solids have been tested by experimenta lists. Nevertheless, more cooperation and understanding between scientists working on low-dimensional cooperative phenomena should appreciably stimulate further development. With a better inderdis ciplinary understanding, new ideas could possibly help chemists in synthesizing tailor-cut solids. This would in return give experi mentalists new phenomena to examine and finally would stimulate new theoretical work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Six papers by physicists from the Japan, India, Brazil and the US address some of the broad frontal issues of superconductivity, which include the mechanisms of high-temperature superconductivity, extra-high-temperature phenomena, the normal state pseudogap, the observations of the isotope effect in a host of different superconducting systems and their explanations, and the unusual features of strongly correlated electron systems like heavy fermions. Two extended papers explore the importance of positron annihilation and using electron spin resonance techniques to study superconducting materials. The treatments should be accessible to working scientists and engineers and to graduate students of physics, chemistry, materials science, solid-state electronics, and other disciplines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Classical and quantum phase transitions for several models are considered. First, a network of parallel superconducting wires weakly coupled together by the proximity effect described by the Ginzburg-Landau theory is studied by mapping onto N-distinguishable two dimensional quantum-mechanics problem with a perpendicular imaginary magnetic field. Using a mean-field approximation, the critical temperature for onset of interwire phase coherence is obtained for a given coupling. Second, the thermodynamic properties of a collection of N small Josephson junctions coupled to a single-mode resonant electromagnetic cavity is considered employing these models: (a) the model which includes all the quantum-mechanical levels of the junction, (b) the Dicke model with only the two lowest energy levels per junction, and (c) a modified Dicke model which contains an additional XY-like coupling between the junctions. In all cases, within a mean-field approximation, for an N-independent junction-cavity coupling, there is a critical junction number N above which there is a continuous transition from incoherence to coherence with decreasing T with a non-Bose distribution for the cavity photon occupation numbers. The third problem investigated is a disorder driven quantum phase transition in a class of transition metal oxides described by a single orbital Hubbard model at half filling. This model contains the interplay of disorder and transitions between phases with differing conducting and magnetic properties. The frequency and temperature dependent conductivity is calculated to characterize the transport properties and the corresponding behavior of the spin susceptibility is calculated to identify the magnetic character of the phases. The dc conductivity vanishes at low disorder in the Mott phase as well as at high disorder in the highly localized phase. However, rather surprisingly, it shows an enhancement at intermediate disorder strengths in a "metallic" regime. The spin susceptibility shows a Curie-1/T dependence in the "metallic" regime because of the presence of local moments.

Book excerpt: Almost a century after its discovery, superconductivity (SC) is still the most challenging and fascinating topic in condensed matter physics. Organic superconductors show exotic phases and phase transitions with a change in temperature or pressure. In this dissertation, we studied the phases and phase-transitions in one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) organic materials. This dissertation itself is a group of three sub-projects. In project (i), we studied the properties of a novel state "paired electron crystal" (PEC) in the quarterfilled Hubbard model to understand the phases and properties of 2D organic materials. We also studied the effects of charge and spin frustration on the 2D strongly correlated quarterfilled band. Our conclusions are based on exact diagonalization (ED) studies that include electron-electron and adiabatic electron-phonon interactions. For moderate to strong frustration, the dominant phase is a novel spin-singlet PEC. We discuss the implications of the PEC concept for understanding several classes of quarter-filled band materials that display unconventional superconductivity. In project (ii), we studied the thermodynamics of a zigzag ladder model, applicable to quasi-1D organic materials. Using the quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method, we studied the thermodynamics of charge ordering in quarter-filled quasi-1D organic charge transfer solids (CTS). Previous theoretical studies on these CTS have focused on ground state properties or purely 1D systems. In the zigzag ladder, no separate high-temperature ordering is expected; instead the ladder is metallic at high temperature, and as temperature decreases, a single transition to the PEC state with a spin-gap takes place. In project (iii), we studied superconducting pairing correlation and metal-insulator transitions in the half-filled Hubbard model. We employed the Hubbard model and used the path integral renormalization group (PIRG) method for this study. Antiferromagneticmediated SC was suggested for small to large frustration in anisotropic triangular lattices. Previous work on the half-filled Hubbard model using the ED method was successful in showing the absence of d-wave SC on a small anisotropic triangular lattice. We extended this study to larger lattices to investigate the existence of long-range order of superconducting pair-pair correlations. We also show the absence of d-wave SC in this model on larger lattices.
