Book excerpt: This is the final report for grant N00014-05-1-0078. Work was completed on a number of projects including developing a multiband multilayered inhomogeneous dynamical mean-field theory code for analyzing properties of magnesium diboride junctions. In addition, work was completed on how one can use a generalized Thouless energy to describe properties of Josephson junctions, and on the nonlinear response of strongly correlated materials to large electric fields. The PI was also involved in two successful CAP projects with the HPCMO. Finally, a textbook entitled "Transport in Multilayered Nanostructures: The Dynamical Mean-Field Theory Approach" was published by Imperial College Press.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the final technical report for James Freericks' ONR superconducting electronics grant for the period from 1999-2005. This work involved the development of computer modeling codes to describe Josephson junctions with barrier materials that are tuned close to the metal-insulator transition. The figure of merit can be determined as a function of different parameters, including the proximity to the metal-insulator transition, the thickness of the barrier, and the temperature. We discovered a simple phenomenological parameter, called the generalized Thouless energy, that is useful for characterizing and summarizing the Josephson junction properties; much behavior of these systems becomes universal when represented in terms of this Thouless energy. We also developed a nonequilibrium many-body formalism that can determine the response of these systems to large electric fields. Much of the computational work was carried out on DOD parallel machines from the HPCMO facilities.

Book Synopsis Fundamentals of Superconducting Nanoelectronics by : Anatoli Sidorenko
Download or read book Fundamentals of Superconducting Nanoelectronics written by Anatoli Sidorenko and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-08-18 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book demonstrates how the new phenomena in superconductivity on the nanometer scale (FFLO state, triplet superconductivity, Crossed Andreev Reflection, synchronized generation etc.) serve as the basis for the invention and development of novel nanoelectronic devices and systems. It demonstrates how rather complex ideas and theoretical models, like odd-pairing, non-uniform superconducting state, pi-shift etc., adequately describe the processes in real superconducting nanostructues and novel devices based on them. The book is useful for a broad audience of readers, researchers, engineers, PhD-students, lectures and others who would like to gain knowledge in the frontiers of superconductivity at the nanoscale.

Download or read book AC/DC written by Tom McNichol and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-01-06 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AC/DC tells the little-known story of how Thomas Edison wrongly bet in the fierce war between supporters of alternating current and direct current. The savagery of this electrical battle can hardly be imagined today. The showdown between AC and DC began as a rather straightforward conflict between technical standards, a battle of competing methods to deliver essentially the same product, electricity. But the skirmish soon metastasized into something bigger and darker. In the AC/DC battle, the worst aspects of human nature somehow got caught up in the wires; a silent, deadly flow of arrogance, vanity, and cruelty. Following the path of least resistance, the war of currents soon settled around that most primal of human emotions: fear. AC/DC serves as an object lesson in bad business strategy and poor decision making. Edison's inability to see his mistake was a key factor in his loss of control over the ?operating system? for his future inventions?not to mention the company he founded, General Electric.
Book Synopsis Challenges to The Second Law of Thermodynamics by : Vladislav Capek
Download or read book Challenges to The Second Law of Thermodynamics written by Vladislav Capek and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-03-30 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advance of scienti?c thought in ways resembles biological and geologic transformation: long periods of gradual change punctuated by episodes of radical upheaval. Twentieth century physics witnessed at least three major shifts — relativity, quantum mechanics and chaos theory — as well many lesser ones. Now, st early in the 21 , another shift appears imminent, this one involving the second law of thermodynamics. Over the last 20 years the absolute status of the second law has come under increased scrutiny, more than during any other period its 180-year history. Since the early 1980’s, roughly 50 papers representing over 20 challenges have appeared in the refereed scienti?c literature. In July 2002, the ?rst conference on its status was convened at the University of San Diego, attended by 120 researchers from 25 countries (QLSL2002) [1]. In 2003, the second edition of Le?’s and Rex’s classic anthology on Maxwell demons appeared [2], further raising interest in this emerging ?eld. In 2004, the mainstream scienti?c journal Entropy published a special edition devoted to second law challenges [3]. And, in July 2004, an echo of QLSL2002 was held in Prague, Czech Republic [4]. Modern second law challenges began in the early 1980’s with the theoretical proposals of Gordon and Denur. Starting in the mid-1990’s, several proposals for experimentally testable challenges were advanced by Sheehan, et al. By the late 1990’s and early 2000’s, a rapid succession of theoretical quantum mechanical ? challenges were being advanced by C ́ apek, et al.

Book Synopsis The Science and Technology of Superconductivity by : William David Gregory
Download or read book The Science and Technology of Superconductivity written by William David Gregory and published by Springer. This book was released on 1973-02 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the discovery of superconductivity in 1911 by H. Kamerlingh Onnes, of the order of half a billion dollars has been spent on research directed toward understanding and utiliz ing this phenomenon. This investment has gained us fundamental understanding in the form of a microscopic theory of superconduc tivity. Moreover, superconductivity has been transformed from a laboratory curiosity to the basis of some of the most sensitive and accurate measuring devices known, a whole host of other elec tronic devices, a soon-to-be new international standard for the volt, a prototype generation of superconducting motors and gener ators, and magnets producing the highest continuous magnetic fields yet produced by man. The promise of more efficient means of power transmission and mass transportation, a new generation of superconducting motors and generators, and computers and other electronic devices with superconducting circuit elements is all too clear. The realization of controlled thermonuclear fusion is perhaps totally dependent upon the creation of enormous magnetic fields over large volumes by some future generation of supercon ducting magnets. Nevertheless, whether or not the technological promise of superconductivity comes to full flower depends as much, and perhaps more, upon economic and political factors as it does upon new technological and scientific breakthroughs. The basic science of superconductivity and its technological implications were the subject of a short course on "The Science and Technology of Superconductivity" held at Georgetown University, Washington, D. C. , during 13-26 August 1971.
