Book excerpt: Remarkable advances in the field of radical chemistry have been made since the seminal isolation of tri(phenyl)methyl radical by Gomberg in 1900. However, carbon centered radicals are still primarily considered as observable, but non-isolable species. Two key factors have inhibited the isolation of these species, namely their inclination to dimerize due to a high C-C bond dissociation energy, and their proclivity to react with oxygen to form peroxides and other derivatives. Herein, we will demonstrate stable monomeric C-centered (amino)(carboxy) radicals, and even related bi- and tri-radical species, can be successfully synthesized by utilizing stable carbenes as building blocks. We will also establish that simple modifications to the acyl R-substituent of these paramagnetic species can lead to highly air persistent variants. Indeed bulky and electron-withdrawing acyl substituents lead to ambidentate C,O-radicals with life-times ranging from several hours to days in the most favorable case. We will then highlight the importance of subtle steric factors, which not only affect the susceptibility of these systems toward undesired reactions, but also control the intrinsic stability of the paramagnetic species, in a comparative study on (amino)(carboxy) radicals constructed from cyclic and acyclic carbenes. Lastly, we will discuss a di-iminium with a flexible linking acyl moiety which undergoes spontaneous intramolecular cyclization upon a two-electron reduction, which surprisingly exhibits two requirements of a molecular switch, namely bistability and reversibility.

Book excerpt: As a general rule any interdisciplinary subject and that includes Computational Theoretical Organic Chemistry (CTOC) incorporates people from the two overlaping areas. In this case the overlaping areas are Computational Theoretical Chemistry and Organic Chemistry. Since CTOC is a relatively young science, people continue to shift from their major discipline to this area. At this particular time in history we have to accept in CTOC people who were trained in Computational Theoretical Chemistry and do not know very much about Organic Chemistry, but more often the opposite case is operative Experimental Organic Chemistry who have not been exposed to Computational Theoretical Chemistry. This situation made NATO Advanced Study Institute in the field of CTOC necessary. The inhomogenity outlined above was present in the NATO Advanced Study Institute, held at Menton in July 1980, and to some degree it is noticable from the content of this volume. This book contains 20 contributions. The first contribution is an Introduc tion chapter in which the initiated experimental chemists are briefed about the subject matter. The last chapter describes very briefly the "Computational Laboratory" that was designed to help people with an experimental back ground in order to obtain some first hand experience. Between the first and the last chapters there are 18 contributions. These contributions were arranged in a spectrum from the exclusively method oriented papers to the applications of existing computational methods to problems of interest in Organic Chemistry.

Book excerpt: This book highlights the intrinsic structures of all kinds of energetic compounds and some structure–property relationships therein. Energetic materials are a class of energy materials that can transiently release a large amount of gases and heat by self-redox after stimulated and usually refer to explosives, propellants and pyrotechnics. Nowadays, in combination with various theories and simulation-aided material design technologies, many new kinds of energetic materials like energetic extended solids, energetic ionic salts, energetic metal organic frames, energetic co-crystals and energetic perovskites have been created, in addition to traditional energetic molecular crystals. It is somewhat dazzling, and an issue of how we can understand these new types of energetic materials is raised. In the past about 20 years, we were immersed in the computational energetic materials. By means of defining a concept of intrinsic structures of energetic materials, which refers to the crystal packing structure of energetic materials, as well as molecule for molecular solid specially, the microscopic structures have been mostly clarified, and related with many macroscopic properties and performances, with molecular simulations. This book presents our understanding about it. Thereby, a simply and new way to readily understand energetic materials is expected to be paved, based on this book. It contains energetic molecular crystals, energetic ionic crystals, energetic atomic crystals, energetic metallic crystals and energetic mixed-type crystals and the substructures closest to crystal packing. Meanwhile, the common intermolecular interactions in energetic crystals will be introduced. In addition, theoretical and simulation methods for treating the intrinsic structures will be briefed, as they are the main tools to reveal the molecules and crystals. Besides, the polymorphism as a level of intrinsic structures will be briefly discussed. In the final of this book, we introduce the crystal engineering of energetic materials. This book features the first proposal of intrinsic structure and crystal engineering of energetic materials and the understanding of the properties and performances of energetic materials by maintaining a concept that structure determines property. It helps to promote the rationality in creating new energetic materials, rather than increase experience.

Book excerpt: Until recently, the element carbon was believed to exhibit only two main allotropic forms, diamond and graphite. Research in the US and Europe has now confirmed the existence of a third previously unknown form - buckminsterfullerene (C60) and its relatives, the fullerenes (C24, C28, C32, C70 etc). The story of fullerene chemistry, physics and materials science began in 1985, almost twenty years after the existence of a spherical carbon cluster was first considered. In September 1985 a joint Sussex/Rice Universities team including Kroto, Heath, O'Brien, Curl and Smalley used a powerful mass spectrometric technique to identify the C+60 species, and proposed a spherical structure and the name buckminsterfullerene. It was not, however, until Krätschmer and Huffman reported the isolation of crystals of C60 in 1990 that the closed cage structure of C60 could be confirmed. The Fullerenes documents the work leading up to 1990 and more recent developments in the field of fullerene research and will serve as an indispensible reference tool for all workers in this area.

Book excerpt: Progress in theoretical and synthetic investigations of organic magnetic species is outlined by slides presented at the Office of Naval Research contractors' meeting of Fall, 1989. Overall, progress was made in synthesis of appropriate groups to allow photochemical and thermal generation of phenoxyl radicals in the solid phase. Thermal stability of a variety of substituted phenoxyl systems generated by these methods in PPMA matrices was investigated. Keywords: Organic radicals; Organic polyradicals; Theoretical and computational chemistry; Unimolecular radical synthesis. (jes).

Book excerpt: This most comprehensive and unrivaled compendium in the field provides an up-to-date account of the chemistry of solids, nanoparticles and hybrid materials. Following a valuable introductory chapter reviewing important synthesis techniques, the handbook presents a series of contributions by about 150 international leading experts -- the "Who's Who" of solid state science. Clearly structured, in six volumes it collates the knowledge available on solid state chemistry, starting from the synthesis, and modern methods of structure determination. Understanding and measuring the physical properties of bulk solids and the theoretical basis of modern computational treatments of solids are given ample space, as are such modern trends as nanoparticles, surface properties and heterogeneous catalysis. Emphasis is placed throughout not only on the design and structure of solids but also on practical applications of these novel materials in real chemical situations.

This is the first monograph in the field and thus represents a vital source of information summarizing the most important and fundamental aspects of the organic and organometallic chemistry of the fullerenes. The book is logically arranged so that information is easy to retrieve, and the style lends itself to effortless reading and to learning more about the chemical properties of a family of molecules that constitute new building blocks for novel architectures in the ever-expanding universe of synthetic chemistry. Belongs on the shelves of university libraries as well as those of chemists interested in the art and science of structure and property manipulation by synthesis.
