Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Direct Current Electrical Engineering The main object of the authors of this work has been to bridge the gap existing between the elementary text-books on magnetism and simple current electricity, Ohm's Law, etc., and so many of the more advanced books which deal with the design point of view. Not only the authors, but also many of their friends, have often found difficulty in recommending to students a book which would, without containing many details of a nature more or less superfluous to the purpose, present in a concise form to second-year students at Universities and Technical Schools the theoretical principles underlying Direct Current Electrical Engineering. No attempt has been made to avoid the use of the Calculus where it simplifies proofs, since it is an essential to all students of engineering but, in this book, only a very elementary knowledge of that subject is demanded. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Electric Circuit The Magnetic Circuit, is intended to give a student in electrical engineering the theoretical elements necessary for calculation of the performance of dynamo-electric machinery and of transmission lines. The advanced student must be taught to treat every electric machine as a particular combination of electric and magnetic circuits, and to base its performance upon the fundamental theoretical relations rather than upon a separate theory established for each kind of machinery, as is often done. The first chapter is devoted to a review of the direct-current circuit, the next four chapters treat of sine-wave alternating current circuits, and the last two chapters give the fundamental properties of the electrostatic circuit. All the important results and methods are illustrated by numerical problems of which there are over one hundred in the text. The pamphlet is not intended for a beginner, but for a student who has had an elementary descriptive course in electrical engineering and some simple laboratory experiments. The treatment is made as far as possible uniform, so that the student sees analogous relations in the direct-current circuit, in the alternating-current circuit, in the electrostatic circuit, and finally in the magnetic circuit. All matter of purely historical or academic interest, not bearing directly upon the theory of electric machinery, has been left out. An ambitious student will find a more exhaustive treatment in the works mentioned at the end of the pamphlet. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Electrical Engineering This text is the outgrowth of experience in teaching the principles of electrical engineering to students Of electrical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It aims to provide a substantial first course in the subject by presenting rigorously, and at the same time in under standable form, the really basic principles upon which modern electrical engineering rests. In furtherance of this purpose many problems and examples from current engineer ing practice are introduced. The book is not, however, to be mistaken for a complete condensed treatise on the entire subject. It is strictly a first course on the principles, and its study Should be followed by detailed courses in direct-current and alternating-current machinery. Where ever applications of the principles are introduced, they are for the purpose of illustrating these principles and render ing them real and alive to the student. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Updated with color and gray scale illustrations, a companion website housing supplementary material, and new sections covering recent developments in antenna analysis and design This book introduces the fundamental principles of antenna theory and explains how to apply them to the analysis, design, and measurements of antennas. Due to the variety of methods of analysis and design, and the different antenna structures available, the applications covered in this book are made to some of the most basic and practical antenna configurations. Among these antenna configurations are linear dipoles; loops; arrays; broadband antennas; aperture antennas; horns; microstrip antennas; and reflector antennas. The text contains sufficient mathematical detail to enable undergraduate and beginning graduate students in electrical engineering and physics to follow the flow of analysis and design. Readers should have a basic knowledge of undergraduate electromagnetic theory, including Maxwell’s equations and the wave equation, introductory physics, and differential and integral calculus. Presents new sections on flexible and conformal bowtie, Vivaldi antenna, antenna miniaturization, antennas for mobile communications, dielectric resonator antennas, and scale modeling Provides color and gray scale figures and illustrations to better depict antenna radiation characteristics Includes access to a companion website housing MATLAB programs, Java-based applets and animations, Power Point notes, Java-based interactive questionnaires and a solutions manual for instructors Introduces over 100 additional end-of-chapter problems Antenna Theory: Analysis and Design, Fourth Edition is designed to meet the needs of senior undergraduate and beginning graduate level students in electrical engineering and physics, as well as practicing engineers and antenna designers. Constantine A. Balanis received his BSEE degree from the Virginia Tech in 1964, his MEE degree from the University of Virginia in 1966, his PhD in Electrical Engineering from The Ohio State University in 1969, and an Honorary Doctorate from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 2004. From 1964 to 1970, he was with the NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, VA, and from 1970 to 1983, he was with the Department of Electrical Engineering of West Virginia University. In 1983 he joined Arizona State University and is now Regents' Professor of Electrical Engineering. Dr. Balanis is also a life fellow of the IEEE.

In conclusion, the author wishes to express his appreciation and thanks to Mr. Joseph M. Jameson, Head of the Depart ment of Physics, and to Mr. Arthur L. Williston, formerly Director of the School of Science and Technology, Pratt Institute, for their assistance and constant encouragement in developing an Elementary Electrical course as here outlined. At the Institute the book will be used by the third year students in Electrical Engineering, and by the third and fourth year students in the courses of Civil, Mechanical, Mining and Chemical Engineering. The problems are for the most part what would be called theoretical, although whenever it is possible they apply to some practical engineering question. In many cases certain constants have been exaggerated in order to emphasize some particular point. At the beginning of each chapter there is a brief statement of the fundamental principles which the problems illustrate. The problems in each chapter and in each section of Chapters XII and XIII have been arranged approximately in their order of difficulty. Many problems which would otherwise be of considerable length have been divided and numbered separately. A large number of simple problems have been included which are suitable for the more elementary courses given to the students in Civil, Mechanical, Mining and Chemical Engineering. It has been thought best to print the answers to these problems separately. Teachers alone can obtain them from the author. In conclusion the author wishes to mention the name of Mr. C. H. Porter, Instructor in Electrical Engineering, to whom credit is due for inaugurating and developing the present system of problem work given in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the Institute.
