This report reprints a collection of studies advancing the knowledge of the effects of fatigue loading on the structural behavior of prestressed concrete flexural members. Each study represents one phase of an extensive research program conducted at Lehigh University and sponsored by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, the Federal Highway Administration, and the Reinforced Concrete Research Council. The four areas of study are: the effect of stress gradient on the probable fatigue life of plain concrete, as related to the compression block of prestressed concrete flexural members; the probable fatigue life of seven-wire prestressing strand under repeated loading of either constant or varied magnitude; the probable fatigue life of prestressed concrete flexural members, as limited by the fatigue failure of the prestressing strand; and the susceptibility of prestressed concrete flexural members to fatigue failure in shear. This report provides guidance to structural engineers faced with the design or analysis of prestressed concrete flexural members and to research engineers who are seeking to extend the knowledge of structural behavior as affected by repeated loading.

Book excerpt: Te primary objective of this experimental investigation was to study flexural cracking behaviour and deflection of partially prestressed post tensioned beams. Fourteen T beams with various combinations of prestressed steel wires adn non prestressed steel bars were tested to failure. Each beam was simply supported on a simple span of 2.74m and was subjected to two symmetrical point loads. The number of prestressed steel wires and the non prestressed deformed bars was selected as being the main controlling parameter ofthis experimental investigation. The deflection, strain distribution and crack width of concrete beams were recorded at different loading stages. The experimental results form tests were compared with theoretical analysis and other empirical formulate as proposed by some researchers. It was observed that the crack initiation and propagation in partially prestressed beams with unbonded tendons depended on many factoes. The results agreed well with the findings os some researchers but were not in close agreement with other workers possibly because the beams were subjected to different conditions particularly due to unbonded tendons.

Book excerpt: The first textbook on the design of FRP for structural engineering applications Composites for Construction is a one-of-a-kind guide to understanding fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) and designing and retrofitting structures with FRP. Written and organized like traditional textbooks on steel, concrete, and wood design, it demystifies FRP composites and demonstrates how both new and retrofit construction projects can especially benefit from these materials, such as offshore and waterfront structures, bridges, parking garages, cooling towers, and industrial buildings. The code-based design guidelines featured in this book allow for demonstrated applications to immediately be implemented in the real world. Covered codes and design guidelines include ACI 440, ASCE Structural Plastics Design Manual, EUROCOMP Design Code, AASHTO Specifications, and manufacturer-published design guides. Procedures are provided to the structural designer on how to use this combination of code-like documents to design with FRP profiles. In four convenient sections, Composites for Construction covers: * An introduction to FRP applications, products and properties, and to the methods of obtaining the characteristic properties of FRP materials for use in structural design * The design of concrete structural members reinforced with FRP reinforcing bars * Design of FRP strengthening systems such as strips, sheets, and fabrics for upgrading the strength and ductility of reinforced concrete structural members * The design of trusses and frames made entirely of FRP structural profiles produced by the pultrusion process

Book excerpt: Over the last few decades, there has been a rapid increase in the volume and weight of heavy vehicles using national road networks. More than half of the bridges around the world are over forty years old. The deterioration of these existing bridges due to increased traffic loading, progressive structural aging, and reinforcement corrosion from severe environmental conditions has become a major problem in most countries. Several techniques have been used to strengthen these structures around the world. External post-tensioning is one of the widely used strengthening techniques in many countries due to its advantages over other methods. Furthermore, flexural strengthening using external post-tensioning has become a well established technique over the past few decades. However, when external post-tensioning is used to strengthen shear damaged reinforced concrete members, unlike flexural damage, the efficiency is significantly reduced by existing shear cracks. This research study was carried out to investigate the behaviour of reinforced concrete beams with existing shear cracks when strengthened by external means. The study consists of two parts: experimental investigations of reinforced concrete beams with different parameters and numerical analysis of reinforced concrete beams using simplified theoretical formulation and finite element modelling. To study the behaviour of shear damaged concrete beams, two different strengthening techniques, namely external post-tensioning and external clamping, were used. In addition to the strengthening, the effect of cracks on the behaviour of reinforced concrete beams was investigated by repairing such cracks using epoxy resin injection. Experimental results showed that existing shear cracks have a substantial effect on the member capacity when strengthened by external posttensioning. Although there are concerns about the practical applications of external clamping, the experimental results suggest that external clamping could be a more effective technique than external post-tensioning to reduce the effect of existing shear cracks on the behaviour of concrete beams. Furthermore, proper repair of the shear cracks could significantly reduce their impact. In the numerical analysis, a simplified mathematical approach was developed to estimate the capacity of shear damaged reinforced concrete beam by expanding the modified compression field theory (MCFT). In addition to the simplified theoretical formulation, a finite element model was developed using the commercial finite element package, Abaqus. Comparison between the predicted behaviour using finite element analysis (FEA) and the experimental data illustrated that the developed finite element model could be used as a reliable tool to estimate the capacity of shear damaged reinforced concrete beams. A parametric study was conducted to investigate the effect of different parameters such as concrete strength, amount of shear reinforcement and crack width, using the developed finite element model. From the numerical study, it was concluded that the simplified approach developed in this study can be used as a reliable and conservative technique to predict the member capacity of a cracked reinforced concrete beam strengthened by external means. Furthermore, the parametric study showed that crack width is the most sensitive parameter that affects the capacity of a cracked beam strengthened by external post-tensioning. Based on this research study it can be concluded that existing shear cracks have a substantial effect on the behaviour of reinforced concrete beams strengthened by external post-tensioning. The simplified mathematical approach developed in this study can be used to estimate the capacity of such beams.

Book excerpt: An experimental study was conducted at the Ferguson Structural Engineering Laboratory in order to investigate the shear behavior of 54-inch deep prestressed concrete U-beams. The primary goal of this research was to improve the design and detailing of the skewed end-blocks commonly used in these beams. As U-beams had been in service for several decades without incident, it was anticipated that there would be little need for change in the design, and the findings of the research would involve a slight tweaking to improve the overall performance. Unfortunately, during the first phase of shear testing (testing of the current design standard) it was found that the U-beam was not reaching the code calculated shear capacity. During this phase of testing the premature failure mechanism was isolated as the breakdown of the web-to-flange interface in the end region of the girder. Therefore, the second phase of testing sought to prevent the breakdown of this boundary by three options: (1) increasing the web width while maintaining current levels of mild reinforcement, (2) increasing the web width while also increasing the amount of reinforcement crossing the web-to-flange boundary, or (3) by increasing the amount of reinforcement at the boundary while maintaining the current web width. Two acceptable solutions to the premature failure method were developed and tested during this phase both of which included an increase in the amount of mild reinforcement crossing the web-to-flange interface (with and without an increase in web width). The research into refining of these new details is ongoing as part of the Texas Department of Transportation's Research Project number 0-5831.

Excellent correlation was obtained between predicted vs. experimental results. The present investigation suggests that shear deformations may have some effect on the stress increase in unbonded tendons for beams having low span-to-depth ratios, while eccentricity variations in external tendons significantly affect the overall behavior for beams having high span-to-depth ratios.

Book excerpt: This study was conducted to evaluate the deflection of partially prestressed concrete beams (PPC) under static and cyclic fatigue loading covering the boundaries of fully prestressed and fully reinforced. Two analytical models were developed, one model for predicting deflection under service monotonic loading and the other for predicting deflection under cyclic fatigue loading. Both models were derived based on interaction between the tensile steel and concrete through bond and slip of reinforcement between the cracked sections. The developed models were compared With extensive experimental results and showed to reproduce, within a good degree of accuracy, load-deflection response of PPC beams tested under both static and cyclic fatigue loading-Several conclusions were drawn on the basis of analytical results, verified by experimental evidence. In designing prestressed concrete beams for fatigue loading, careful consideration should be given to the increase in reinforcement stresses induced by cyclic creep of concrete. This phenomenon is particularly important in cracked fully prestressed beams where the stresses were observed to increase significantly with number of cycles. This phenomenon does not only reduce the fatigue life of the beams but also results in a significant increase in their deflections under cyclic loading. The reinforcing steel in the partially prestressed beams plays a major role in reducing the phenomenon of steel stress increase under cyclic loading which results in enhancing their fatigue life and deformation performance! cracking, deflection,). It was found also, that parameters, such as bond strength, crack spacings and bar diameters have little influence on the service load-deflection response post cracking indicating that the contribution of the uncracked regions of the concrete member to its overall flexural rigidity can be practically neglected.
