Book excerpt: The objective of our research is to investigate the physics as well as to develop the technology of compact submillimeter-wave devices.(1) A revolutionary new device, the gyro-frequency multiplier, which can potentially generate 50 kW at 1-2 Thz by using a 140 GHz gyrotron as its input source, has been tested in our laboratory. (2) Our second-harmonic gyro-TWT amplifier, which is based on our recent marginal stability design (MSD) procedure, yielded extremely good results, including a record setting output power of 207 kW, with 13% efficiency, 16 dB saturated gain, 2% bandwidth and was completely stable. (3) The MSD procedure was also used to design two other stable, high performance amplifiers: a 1 MW, 140 GHz, third harmonic gyro-TWT and a 100 kW CW, 95 GHz, TE(01) gyro-TWT. (4) We have also begun a major new program to develop high power, ultra-wideband prebunched FELs for radar applications using a photoemitted rf gun (5) We have also continued to construct a high-performance 250 kW CW, 33.2 GHz TE(01)TE(02) gyroklystron amplifier and begun a 70 kW CW, 95 GHz, third harmonic, smooth bore gyroklystron amplifier program.

Book excerpt: Four separate processes for electron beam acceleration and sub-millimeter wave generation have been studied. (1) We have extended our concept that harmonic gyro-TWT amplifiers can stably generate substantially higher power than at the fundamental cyclotron frequency by designing a third harmonic amplifier that is predicted to generate 2 MW with good stability and gain characteristics. (2) A three-cavity TE(0n) gyroklystron circuit, which is predicted to efficiently generate a peak power of 250 kW with high amplifier performance, has been received from the machinist. (3) The first high energy photoelectrons have been produced in the X-band rf gun. (4) In addition, the previous sixth-harmonic gyrofrequency multiplier that produced 3 kW with 5% efficiency has been upgraded so that it will emit its design value of 150 kW with 30% efficiency.

Book excerpt: The high energy, axis-encircling electron beam produced by our TE sub 111 gyro-resonant accelerator has been used to drive two varieties of high cyclotron harmonic amplifiers, the high harmonic gyro-klystron and the high harmonic gyro-TWT. The gyro-klystron has been tested in three configurations. The first was a simple two cavity gyro-klystron where the energy of the rotating beam is modulated in the buncher cavity. Bunches develop in the drift tuve and radiate in the catcher cavity. The fifth harmonic device yielded a gain of 20 dB and a saturated power of 90 W.A multi-cavity system can be expected to yielded considerably more gain because intermediate cavities will enhance the bunch formation. Using the same overall length as the two cavity device, the four cavity gyro-klystron yielded a gain of 37 dB, but saturated at roughly the same output power.

Book excerpt: The use of a relativistic beam of electrons for the generation of submillimeter waves in large interaction structures was investigated as a possible alternative to the scaling of conventional microwave generators to the extremely small dimensions required. The design of an X-band linear accelerator for production of a beam having high harmonic current content is discussed, and various methods of achieving good bunching are considered. A small angle theory of bunching in a distributed buncher is developed and used as a guide in the design of the buncher section of the accelerator. A new microwave measurement technique for measuring field strength and phase in nonresonant structures was used to determine the electrical properties of the buncher. The effect of auxiliary equipment on the operation of the distributed buncher and accelerator is evaluated. Experimental results from the use of the accelerator with a magnetic undulator are presented. Radiation is detected in the range from the sixth harmonic to the eightieth harmonic (wavelength equals 0.4 millimeter) of the accelerator frequency. Peak powers generated are of the order of 150 mw at 5 mm, 40 mw at 1 mm, and 1/4 mw at 0.4 mm. The dependence of the radiation on magnetic field strength, magnet spacing, interaction length and waveguide size is in excellent agreement with theory. (Author).

Book excerpt: This report summarizes theoretical and experimental work on electron beams in space. The purpose was to investigate the possibility of using a modulated electron beam on a space platform as a virtual antenna to radiate electromagnetic waves down to the earth's surface. Our study has established a strong theoretical base from which to make predictions of the electromagnetic radiation produced by a modulated electron beam in space, and it has given much new information about the wave and plasma effects produced in the vicinity of such a beam. Although it necessarily leaves some important questions unanswered, it nevertheless provides substantial support for the virtual antenna concept. Further experiments and theory will be required to establish the optimum conditions for radiation from such an antenna.
