Book Synopsis The Ethics of Personalised Medicine by : Jochen Vollmann
Download or read book The Ethics of Personalised Medicine written by Jochen Vollmann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent times, the phrase ’personalised medicine’ has become the symbol of medical progress and a label for better health care in the future. However, a controversial debate has developed around whether these promises of better, more personal and more cost-efficient medicine are realistic. This book brings together leading researchers from across Europe and North America, from both normative and empirical disciplines, who take a more critical view of the often encountered hype associated with personalised medicine. Partially drawing on a four year collaborative research project funded by the German Ministry for Education and Research, the book presents a multidisciplinary debate on the current state of research on the ethical, legal and social implications of personalised medicine. At a time when future health care is a topic of much discussion, this book provides valuable policy recommendations for the way forward. This study will be of interest to researchers from various disciplines including philosophy, bioethics, law and social sciences.

Book Synopsis Theology, Ethics, and the Nineteenth-century American College Ideal by : Thomas Edward Frank
Download or read book Theology, Ethics, and the Nineteenth-century American College Ideal written by Thomas Edward Frank and published by Mellen University Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study argues that some of the best-known religious and educational figures of the period from 1880 to 1920 were deeply conservative of an older 19th-century synthesis composed of three major elements of certainty: the dependability and comprehensibility of the laws of nature, the universality of moral principles, and the supremacy of Christianity. It also brings back into scholarly scrutiny the works of three college presidents, William DeWitt Hyde, Henry Churchill King, and William Jewett Tucker, who where interpreters of contemporary issues in theology and education. Lastly, the text challenges typical assumptions in the history of higher education that the Progressive era was the age of universities. The three presidents insisted that colleges were distinctive in their capacity not just to teach students new information but to mold character, a conviction that was inherited from previous generations and continues to sway some educators today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, Paul S. Chung charts the history of social scientific study of religion from the axial age to the present day, and thereby lays a foundation for a new model of constructive theology in the comparative study of religion, culture and society. Analysing the thought of Max Weber, Alfred Schutz, Pierre Bourdieu, Michel Foucault, Edmund Husserl, Max Horkheimer and others, Chung deals effectively with material interests, power relations and the history of race, gender and sexuality. The result is a synthesis that is at once innovative, critical, and applicable to current methodology in theology and the social sciences.
