Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. [A Theology of Participation] Participation is presented in this book as a key concept for soteriology. Based on an understanding of salvation as participation in God's renewal of creation, it initially deals with fundamental questions about God and creation from a participatory perspective. In a second part, Christian practice of participation is reflected: social engagement, (religious) experience, the Eucharist, prayer, song. A third part ponders how participation can be framed and practiced in a constructive way in a pluralistic society. On the quest for a non-exclusionary understanding of participation, even the ambivalent notions of lived participation are considered. The book has its roots in Wesleyan-Methodist theology, but it offers constructive theological approaches and is ecumenical in its scope.

Book excerpt: The map of global Christianity continues to undergo dramatic changes, and on this map Africa comes to the fore. The proceedings of the Third International Conference at Munich-Freising on the History of Christianity in the Non-Western World seek to respond to the growing importance of Africa in the context of World Christianity. Prominent scholars from Africa and Europe deal with the manifold manifestations of African Christianity in the 20th century and the various ways in which "African" and "Christian" identities were formulated and interacted with each other. The negotiation of the local and the global in the process of forming African churches is discussed, as is the question of the impact of internal African debates and developments on global ecumenical discussions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays delineates the history of the rather disparate intellectual tradition usually labeled as "Platonic" or "Neoplatonic". In chronological order, the book covers the most eminent philosophic schools of thought within that tradition. The most important terms of the Platonic tradition are studied together with a discussion of their semantic implications, the philosophical and theological claims associated with the terms, the sources that furnish the terms, and the intellectual traditions aligned with or opposed to them. The contributors thereby provide a vivid intellectual map of the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period. Contributions are written in English or German.

Book excerpt: A collection of papers with new insights on ancient religion, read at a colloquium in honour of Professor H.S. Versnel ("Inconsistencies in Greek and Roman Religion"). The contributions, presented by nine leading scholars in the field, cover many areas of the religious experience of the Greeks and Romans: myth and ritual (W. Burkert), the gods (F. Zeitlin), cult, festivals, sacrifice. Several papers consider methodological problems and the progress of scholarship; they highlight the contribution of H.S. Versnel to the field. The papers are based on a wide range of sources: pagan and Christian, literary and epigraphical and iconographical. The collection will fascinate all scholars interested in ancient religion, whether they study malign magic, the Imperial cult or general theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. [Participation and Cohesion. Potentials of Religion in Public Space] The public space is a space of relationships. It enables various forms of communication and encounters that can aim at participation and social cohesion. But how are participation and cohesion shaped and who shapes them? How do processes of social gathering and communalization develop - possibly also through the participation of religious actors? Where is the sociospatial seat in the life of religion? Which different shades of religion and religious communication play a role? What roles do digital media play? What conclusions can be drawn for theology and the church? The volume explores these questions in an interdisciplinary discussion based on a well-established combination of academic lectures and practical examples.

Book excerpt: Among the consequences of the all engulfing process of globalisation is the experience that not only it promotes interdependence among peoples, folks, cultures and religions, but it also creates problems and tensions. The assignment of a thoughtful and practice-oriented accompanying of this development poses itself subsequently. From this background different lectures are being conducted in different places; research initiatives as well as projects are started and executed while several publications are featuring. Visible here is the fact that although there abound rich reservoirs of knowledge, there is still no clarity as to the contents and the theoretical and methodical contrasts that are yet to be examined.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early Judaism and early Christianity emerged during the Hellenistic and early Roman imperial era. They were, naturally, confronted with the Hellenistic and the Roman religion. The question therefore arose as to whether Jews or Christians were free to participate in religious activities alien to the religious heritage of their own. In his articles, Karl-Gustav Sandelin presents documentary material showing that this problem was a burning issue within Judaism from the beginning of the Hellenistic period until the end of the first century C.E. Several Jewish individuals converted to the Hellenistic or the Roman religion. Such behavior was also discussed and generally condemned, for example by the Books of Maccabees and authors such as Philo of Alexandria and Flavius Josephus. A similar problem is to be found in the New Testament, notably in the letters of Paul, especially in the first letter to the Corinthians and in the Revelation of John.

Book excerpt: This volume presents empirical studies, exegetical and historical investigations, contributions on practical theology and religious education gravitating around the concept of ‘lived religion,’ which suggests fresh attention to the body, perception, experience, everyday life, and biography.
