Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Extinction of Evil: Three Theological Essays Accordingly, this proposed natural and indeed scientific mode of dealing with the Scripture Reve lation, once set forth, has spread rapidly throughout the missions of the anglo-saxon world, through India, and through the English-speaking colonies. It has been widely extended also in America, al though official persons are seemingly ignorant of the fact. It has also been widely extended in French speaking countries. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Relations of the Church to Society: Theological Essays The most useful introduction to this volume will, we think, be found in a brief account of the writer's life and character, with some indications of the very high esteem in which, as a man and as a theologian, he was held by Cardinal Newman and other distinguished men. Edmund Joseph O'Reilly was born in London, on the April 30th, 1811, and he was six years old before his parents returned to Ireland. His father died while he was young, leaving him to the care of his pious mother. This lady was one of five sisters, one of whom married the third Lord Kenmare (grandfather to the present earl); another entered the Visitation Convent at Westbury, in England; another married Mr. Bagot, of Castle Bagot, in County Dublin; and the last married Mr. Dease, of Turbotstown, in Queen's County. The father of these ladies and of Mrs. O'Reilly, Mr. Edmund O'Callaghan, of Killegorey, in the County Clare, was mortally wounded in a duel, but survived five days to repent and prepare for his judgment. It is curious to find such a man as Father O'Reilly linked so closely with the bygone age of duelling. Edmund O'Reilly spent several years of his boyhood at Mount Catherine, a few miles from Limerick. His first education he received from a private tutor. After some years at Clongowes and Maynooth, he went to Rome, about 1830, for his ecclesiastical studies, and spent seven years attending the classes of the Roman College, but residing in the Irish College, of which the late Cardinal Cullen was then president. At the end of a long and distinguished course he gained the degree of Doctor of Divinity, after what is termed a "public act" de universa theologia. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collection of Theological Essays: From Various Authors; With an Introduction The following collection of Theological Essays is designed for students in divinity, Sunday-school teachers, and all intelligent readers who desire to gain correct views of religion, and especially of the character, use, and meaning of the Scriptures. It was suggested by the recent excellent Commentary on the Epistles of Paul by Rev. Mr. Jowett, now Professor of Greek in the University of Oxford. Understanding that this work was not likely to be reprinted in this country, and that the high price of the English edition rendered it inaccessible to most readers, it appeared to me that a collection of Theological Essays, which should include the most important dissertations connected with that Commentary, would be a valuable publication. Mr. Jowett seems to me to have penetrated more deeply into the views and spirit of Paul, and the circumstances under which he wrote, than any previous English commentator. Some of the best results of his labors are presented in the Essays which are now republished in this collection. Mr. Jowett's notes might have been more satisfactory in some respects if, in addition to other German commentaries which he has mentioned, he had made use of those of De Wette and Meyer. But, while this is so, I find that Essay II. - where there has had to be produced a sort of rapid sketch of Biblical Theology, from the point of view of eschato logical doctrine - contains much discussion of the outside, or apologetic and critical aspects, of questions, with the heart of which one has been dealing in Essay I. If Essay I. Seems to be too slight in its treatment of certain questions regarding the Gospels, may I hope that Essay II. Will supply its deficiencies? The suggesting-ground of the paper entitled Protestant ism was really a pamphlet, or rather book, judging by its careful and erudite composition; and this work, if now for gotten naturally after a lapse of a dozen years, was really ascribed to two separate bishops of distinguished literary pre tension. I know not who it really was that I commented upon, but certainly he was no ghostly creation of mine: he was incarnate at that time, and I hope still continues to be so.
