Tyler Blethen's High Mountains Rising provides a clear, systematic, and engaging overview of the Appalachian timeline, its people, and the most significant aspects of life in the region. The first half of the fourteen essays deal with historical issues including Native Americans, pioneer settlement, slavery, the Civil War and Reconstruction, industrialization, the Great Depression, migration, and finally, modernization. The remaining essays take a more cultural focus, addressing stereotypes, music, folklife, language, literature, and religion. Bringing together many of the most prestigious scholars in Appalachian studies, this volume has been designed for general and classroom use, and includes suggestions for further reading.

Book excerpt: Illustrates the Club's leadership in outdoor skills training and conservation activismThere are more than 15,000 Mountaineers members nationwideIncludes anecdotes about members who made significant contributions to the climbing worldThis club is vigilant for wise conservation, and it is also anxious to blaze ways into the hills that anyone may follow, wrote Edmond Meany in 1910. The revered Northwest conservationist was outlining a vision for The Mountaineers, the recently formed outdoor club that he was to preside over for many years. But Meany couldn't foresee just how many would follow those ways. The fascinating, often amusing story of The Mountaineers' first 90 years of exploring the freedom of the hills comes alive in this book. It's loaded with tales ranging from the astounding to the heroic, such as pioneering trails through terra incognita, rappelling from office buildings, rescuing injured climbers in the middle of the night, and pestering legislators on behalfof the wilderness. There's even some of the discord occasioned by the growing pains inevitable in a club of adventurers that now totals some 15,000 feisty, dedicated individuals. As this richly illustrated history shows, the evolution of The Mountaineers has matched and even aided the growth of outdoor recreation far beyond the Pacific Northwest. The club, its members, and its publications have had a profound impact on the larger community. Many of today's recreational resources came from the actions and activities of the The Mountaineers, including trails, wilderness areas, and national parks; alpine skiing in the Cascades; climbing courses in the US, and the national Mountain Rescue Association.Heading into the next century, The Mountaineers faces significant challenges both internal and external, such as: maintaining volunteerism in an non-profit, member-managed club when it doesn't feel small and clubby anymore; assuring continued, responsible access to the backcountry; and dealing with the backlash conservation activists face from commercial and industrial interests. On these and other issues, The Mountaineers intends to remain a leader in both philosophy and action.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most Americans know Appalachia through stereotyped images: moonshine and handicrafts, poverty and illiteracy, rugged terrain and isolated mountaineers. Historian David Hsiung maintains that in order to understand the origins of such stereotypes, we must look critically at their underlying concepts, especially those of isolation and community. Hsiung focuses on the mountainous area of upper East Tennessee, tracing this area's development from the first settlementin the eighteenth century to the eve of the Civil War. Through his examination, he identifies the different ways in which the region's inhabitants were connected to or separated from other peoples and places. Using an interdisciplinary framework, he analyzes geographical and sociocultural isolation from a number of perspectives, including transportation networks, changing economy, population movement, and topography. This provocative work will stimulate future studies of early Appalachia and serve as a model for the analysis of regional cultures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hillwalking is one of Ireland's most popular leisure activities today. Rock climbing has developed to a level of technical excellence with crags in almost every county and numerous indoor climbing walls. Irish mountaineers have completed winter ascents in the Alps, scaled the highest Himalayan peaks and other previously unclimbed giants, and explored hitherto unknown valleys. Paddy O'Leary recounts the history of hillwalking and mountaineering in Ireland: from the early activists – some were involved in gunrunning, others died at Gallipoli – until the turn of the millennium, when mountaineering in Ireland was no longer the preserve of the middle class. This history recounts the adventures, dangers, successes and failures which make this multifaceted activity such a fascinating one, and mirrors the spirit of all who love these places. * Also available: The Longest Road by Sean Rothery

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Appalachia's Path to Dependency, Paul Salstrom examines the evolution of economic life over time in southern Appalachia. Moving away from the colonial model to an analysis based on dependency, he exposes the complex web of factors—regulation of credit, industrialization, population growth, cultural values, federal intervention—that has worked against the region. Salstrom argues that economic adversity has resulted from three types of disadvantages: natural, market, and political. The overall context in which Appalachia's economic life unfolded was one of expanding United States markets and, after the Civil War, of expanding capitalist relations. Covering Appalachia's economic history from early white settlement to the end of the New Deal, this work is not simply an economic interpretation but draws as well on other areas of history. Whereas other interpretations of Appalachia's economy have tended to seek social or psychological explanations for its dependency, this important work compels us to look directly at the region's economic history. This regional perspective offers a clear-eyed view of Appalachia's path in the future.
