Book excerpt: MARTIN CHUZZLEWITThe life and adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit (Martin Chuzzlewit) is a novel by Charles Dickens, considered the last of his picaresque novels. Originally, it was serialized between 1842 and 1844. Like almost all of Dickens' novels, Martin Chuzzlewit was released to the public in monthly installments.Dickens changed the plot to send the title character to America. This allowed the author to portray the United States (which he had visited in 1842) satirically as a nearby desert with pockets of civilization filled with deceptive and self-promotional hawkers.The main theme of the novel, according to a preface by Dickens, is selfishness, portrayed satirically with all members of the Chuzzlewit family. The novel is also notable for two of Dickens' big bad guys, Seth Pecksniff and Jonas Chuzzlewit.Martin Chuzzlewit was raised by his grandfather and namesake. Years before, elder Martin took the precaution of raising an orphaned daughter, Mary Graham. She must be her nanny, with the understanding that she will only be cared for during Martin's life. She therefore has a strong motivation to promote her well-being, unlike those close to her, who want to inherit only her money. However, his grandson Martin falls in love with Mary and wants to marry him, ruining Martin senior's plans. When Martin refuses to abandon the engagement, his grandfather disinherits him.Martin becomes an apprentice of Seth Pecksniff, a gourmet architect. Instead of teaching his students, he lives off their tuition and does some drawing work that he passes for his own. He has two spoiled girls, nicknamed Cherry and Merry, having been baptized Charity and Mercy. Unbeknownst to Martin, Pecksniff actually engaged him to establish closer ties with the rich grandfather, thinking that it will win Pecksniff a prominent place in the testament.The young Martin befriended Tom Pinch, a benevolent soul whose late grandmother had given Pecksniff everything she had, believing that Pecksniff would make him an architect and a gentleman. Pinch is incapable of believing the bad things that others tell him about Pecksniff, and still defends it vehemently. Pinch works for low wages, while believing to be the unworthy recipient of Pecksniff's charity.When older Martin hears about his grandson's new life, he demands that Pecksniff kill young Martin. Then Martin senior settles and falls under the control of Pecksniff. Meanwhile, Pinch falls in love with Marie, but does not declare it, knowing his attachment to young Martin.One of Martin's greedy parents is his brother, Anthony Chuzzlewit, who is in business with his son, Jonas. In spite of the considerable wealth, they live miserable and cruel lives, with Jonas constantly reprimanding his father, desirous that the old man die to inherit. Anthony died suddenly and under suspicious circumstances, leaving his fortune to Jonah. Jonas runs Cherry while talking to Merry all the time. He then abruptly tells Pecksniff that he wants to marry Merry, and throws Cherry - not without demanding 1,000 more pounds over the 4,000 that Pecksniff had promised him as Cherry's dowry, with the argument that Cherry has better odds for the arrangement.Jonas, meanwhile, gets bogged down with unscrupulous Montague Tigg and joins his pyramidal stratagem as a scam to insurance. At the beginning of the book, he is a little thief and catchy of a Chuzzlewit parent, Chevy Slyme. Tigg cheats the young Martin of a precious pocket watch and uses the funds to turn into a seemingly handsome man called "Tigg Montague". This facade convinces investors that he must be an important businessman from whom they can greatly benefit. Jonas eventually killed Tigg, who acquired some kind of information about him.
