Download or read book Voice in Motion written by Gina Bloom and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2013-04-19 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Voice in Motion explores the human voice as a literary, historical, and performative motif in early modern English drama and culture, where the voice was frequently represented as struggling, even failing, to work. In a compelling and original argument, Gina Bloom demonstrates that early modern ideas about the efficacy of spoken communication spring from an understanding of the voice's materiality. Voices can be cracked by the bodies that produce them, scattered by winds when transmitted as breath through their acoustic environment, stopped by clogged ears meant to receive them, and displaced by echoic resonances. The early modern theater underscored the voice's volatility through the use of pubescent boy actors, whose vocal organs were especially vulnerable to malfunction. Reading plays by Shakespeare, Marston, and their contemporaries alongside a wide range of late sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century texts—including anatomy books, acoustic science treatises, Protestant sermons, music manuals, and even translations of Ovid—Bloom maintains that cultural representations and theatrical enactments of the voice as "unruly matter" undermined early modern hierarchies of gender. The uncontrollable physical voice creates anxiety for men, whose masculinity is contingent on their capacity to discipline their voices and the voices of their subordinates. By contrast, for women the voice is most effective not when it is owned and mastered but when it is relinquished to the environment beyond. There, the voice's fragile material form assumes its full destabilizing potential and becomes a surprising source of female power. Indeed, Bloom goes further to query the boundary between the production and reception of vocal sound, suggesting provocatively that it is through active listening, not just speaking, that women on and off the stage reshape their world. Bringing together performance theory, theater history, theories of embodiment, and sound studies, this book makes a significant contribution to gender studies and feminist theory by challenging traditional conceptions of the links among voice, body, and self.

Book Synopsis Shakespeare's Comedy of Love by : Alexander Leggatt
Download or read book Shakespeare's Comedy of Love written by Alexander Leggatt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-11 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1987. This study removes some of the critical puzzles that Shakespeare's comedies of love have posed in the past. The author shows that what distinguishes the comedies is not their similarity but their variety - the way in which each play is a new combination of essentially similar ingredients, so that, for example, the boy/girl changes in The Merchant of Venice are seen to have a quite different significance from those in As You Like It.

Much of this play's tension involves Prince Hal and Falstaff, as the former tries to live up to his duties and responsibilities. In creating Falstaff Shakespeare gave us one of the theater's most enduring and memorable characters.
Book Synopsis Mapping the World of Anglo-American Studies at the Turn of the Century by : Marija Knežević
Download or read book Mapping the World of Anglo-American Studies at the Turn of the Century written by Marija Knežević and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-05 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume revisits the most important issues that Anglo-American studies are facing at the beginning of the twenty-first century, with regards to both research and teaching. Given the English language’s status as a lingua franca, the culture that produced it, and that has been changing it, the literature written in English, and relevant linguistic and literary discourse have come to largely dominate critical theory globally. Therefore, the subjects of Anglo-American studies, and their traditional and modern concepts, must be approached from a multidisciplinary perspective, and must also be problematized in, and determined by, other spheres of the world, especially at the universities at which they are studied. This book, consequently, approaches both mainstream cultural, literary, linguistic and academic achievements and, often by way of comparison, those smaller, more distant, and marginalized fields, traditionally subordinate studies, as well as instances of cultural hybridization. Given its concern with a broad field of culture, literature, linguistics, and methodology of teaching English as a foreign language, this book consists of two main parts comprising the closest research and teaching fields; one attending to culture and literature, and the other approaching linguistics and methodology.

Download or read book Othello written by William Shakespeare and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Translated here into English for the first time is a monumental work of literary history and criticism comparable in scope and achievement to Eric Auerbach's Mimesis. Italian critic Francesco Orlando explores Western literature's obsession with outmoded and nonfunctional objects (ruins, obsolete machinery, broken things, trash, etc). Combining the insights of psychoanalysis and literary-political history, Orlando traces this obsession to a turning point in history, at the end of eighteenth-century industrialisation, when the functional becomes the dominant value of Western culture. Roaming through every genre and much of the history of Western literature, the author identifies distinct categories into which obsolete images can be classified and provides myriad examples. The function of literature in our culture, he concludes, is to remind us of what we have lost and what we are losing as we rush toward the future.
Book Synopsis Of Kings and Clowns by : Tiran Manucharyan
Download or read book Of Kings and Clowns written by Tiran Manucharyan and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-02-28 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the transformations Egyptian theatre has undergone since 1967. Through detailed analyses of the plays, the book investigates the ways Egyptian theatre represents, formulates, and imagines political and cultural leadership and, by implication, enacts its own leadership. Alongside the work of established playwrights, such as Yusuf Idris, Abul-ʿEla El-Salamouny, Fathia El-ʿAssal and Lenin El-Ramly, it also discusses the input in theatre of a younger generation, reflecting the new transformations in Egyptian theatre following the 2011 revolution. Relating the theoretical underpinnings of its analyses to theoretical discussions by Egyptian playwrights, the book contributes to current English-language scholarship in theatre studies, by providing a discourse largely absent from it. Considering the growing sense in English-language academia on the need for research and education beyond the Western canon this book offers an important addition to the study resources. This book will interest both scholars and students who study the Arab world, and researchers and students with an interest in cultural studies, more specifically twentieth- and twenty-first-century theatre, and literature studies. The book’s specific focus on political theatre and its gender perspective make it also of interest to the fields of political and gender studies.
