Book Synopsis Broken Tablets by : Jonathan P. Ribner
Download or read book Broken Tablets written by Jonathan P. Ribner and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-12-22 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this first study of art, law, and the legislator, Jonathan Ribner provides a revealing look at French art from 1789 to 1848, the period in which constitutional law was established in France. Drawing on several disciplines, he discusses how each of the early constitutional regimes in France used imagery suggesting the divine origin and sacred character of its laws. Primarily a study of art and politics, Broken Tablets discusses painting, sculpture, prints, and medals (many reproduced here for the first time), as well as contemporary literature, including the poetry of Alfred de Vigny, Alphonse de Lamartine, and Victor Hugo. Ribner assesses the ways in which legislation imagery became an instrument of political propaganda, and he clearly illuminates the cult of the law as it became personalized under Napoleon, monarchist under the Restoration, and defensive under Louis-Phillipe.

Book Synopsis Cézanne & Giacometti by : Paul Cézanne
Download or read book Cézanne & Giacometti written by Paul Cézanne and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though they were born 62 years and hundreds of miles apart, synchronicities between Paul Cézanne and Alberto Giacometti continue to arise. Called "father of us all" by Pablo Picasso, the French Post-Impressionist Cézanne is widely regarded as the artistic bridge between Impressionism and Modernism, and he was highly influential to Giacometti, the Swiss sculptor known for his Surrealistic, elongated human forms of the 1940s, 50s and 60s. The subtitle of this volume, Paths of Doubt, refers in part to both artists' refusal of the movements by which they were embraced: in Cézanne's case, Impressionism, and in Giacometti's, Surrealism. Doubt also alludes to Cézanne's late success. His legendarily bad social skills led him from the artistic hub of 1870s Paris to the French countryside, where he lived as a recluse, only attracting attention for his work when he was in his late fifties. Giacometti, conversely, found early success with the Surrealists but broke off from them in the late 40s when he began making more realistic black figurative sculptures. His doubt surfaced in statements like these: "If I could make a sculpture or a painting (but I'm not sure I want to) in just the way I'd like to, they would have been made long since (but I am incapable of saying what I want). Oh, I see a marvelous and brilliant painting, but I didn't do it, nobody did it. I don't see my sculpture, I see blackness." This unique volume sheds light on Giacometti's stylistic allusions to Cézanne and finds surprising corollaries between the two masters' lives and work.

Book Synopsis Pieter Bruegel the Elder by : Pieter Bruegel
Download or read book Pieter Bruegel the Elder written by Pieter Bruegel and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2001 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pieter Bruegel the Elder (1525/30-1569) was a remarkable draftsman and designer of prints as well as a great painter. His independent drawings and designs for engravings and etchings, which were carried out by the leading printmakers of his day, have fascinated scholars and the general public alike since they were created. They have recently been the subject of research that has given rise to a reevaluation of the parameters of Bruegel's oeuvre. The new scholarship has been brought to bear in the texts of the present volume, which accompanies a major exhibition of 140 of Bruegel's prints and drawings to be shown at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam, from May to August 2001 and at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, from September to December 2001. An international group of experts discusses the new Bruegel who has emerged from recent studies, in essays on the artist's life, his contributions as a draftsman and as a printmaker, the survival of his art, and his relationship to the humanism of his day. They also illuminate his genius in entries on all the works in the exhibition. Every work is illustrated and rich comparative illustrations are included. Provenances an

Book Synopsis Daumier Drawings by : Colta Feller Ives
Download or read book Daumier Drawings written by Colta Feller Ives and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 1992 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By combining Daumier's drawings with selected examples of his paintings, prints, and bronzes, this book traces the evolution of the artist's succinct and emphatically expressive style from its roots in the European tradition exemplified by Rembrandt, Rubens, and Fragonard to its modern manifestations in the works of Degas, Cezanne, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Beckmann. In the course of his long and productive career Daumier returned again and again to favorite themes, often after considerable lapses of time. Thus the works here are grouped by their subject matter into six sections: studies of individual figures and faces; narrative scenes inspired by history or literature; views of contemporary urban and domestic life; dramatic portrayals of lawyers in court; depictions of street performers; and episodes in the wanderings of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza.
