Book excerpt: The use of technology has become customary for many faculty teaching in institutions of higher education. And, many institutions provide professional development (PD) for integrating instructional technology into the classroom. But, research shows that many PD opportunities emphasize the use of specific technology tools and are inefficient at teaching faculty how to approach technology integration that is particular to their discipline. The objective of this study was to explore instructional technology administrators' lived experiences creating technology-integration profession development opportunities for education faculty and education faculty's experiences participating in these opportunities. The rationale for this study emanates from the researcher's aspiration to create PD opportunities for education faculty that enhance the effectiveness of their teaching. This study utilized a qualitative transcendental phenomenological methodology to explore the lived experiences of instructional technology administrators and education faculty. The central question to guide this study was the following: Using the Technological, Pedagogical, and Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework, what are instructional technology administrators' lived experiences on creating technology-integration professional development opportunities for education faculty, and what are education faculty's lived experiences engaging in technology-integration professional development? Purposeful and snowball sampling methods were used for selecting three instructional technology administrators and eight education faculty. The primary data collection method was an in-depth interview; supportive methods included non-participant observations and document analysis. The data were coded through initial and focused coding. Through analysis and interpretation, data were organized into themes that emerged in the data. This study revealed many experiences associated with creating and engaging in technology-integration PD. These experiences showed that PD is created for large audiences and covers broad topics; however, education faculty are interested in support for a specific task. TPACK professional development is infrequent. However, based on the one-to-one nature of support that is often given to education faculty, there is potential to offer TPACK PD in alternative settings outside of the traditional large-group environments. Recommendations are offered for instructional technology administrators, university leaders, and further research opportunities. Given the various resources available in each instructional technology department, the recommendations put forth should be considered for its appropriateness on an individual university basis.

With more availability and better usability of technology in schools, the potential for teachers to use digital tools in schools is greater than ever. However a key factor determining whether new technologies are adopted is the extent to which teachers know how to use them to support students' learning. The special knowledge of how technologies can support students' learning of subject area content is known as technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK). This study explored the relationship of accomplished teachers' TPACK confidence to their use of technology with students and to their teaching and learning contexts. In an online survey, 307 National Board Certified teachers provided information about the frequency and breadth of their computer use with students; their use of computers in their personal lives; the school, classroom, and personal resources available to them for learning; and the people in their learning networks supporting their learning to use new technologies for teaching. Although the representativeness of the sample was limited and the measures self-reported, they provided rich opportunities to discover relationships and suggest avenues for supporting teacher learning of new technologies. Analyses showed that these accomplished teachers' confidence in their knowledge of how to use new technologies for teaching was different from their confidence in using technologies more generally. Further, TPACK confidence related to student use of computers in the classroom. No associations were found between TPACK confidence and age, gender, grade levels, subject areas, or student populations. However, confidence in teaching with technology did relate to measures of the teachers' learning resources. More varied learning resources and more productive social learning networks were associated with higher TPACK confidence. Three key types of support provided by learning partners -- learning together, posing challenges, and connecting the teacher to others to learn from -- were significantly more common among high-TPACK teachers. Findings in this study point to ways we might further understand, and subsequently increase, teacher confidence in using new technologies to support student learning. Several questions are raised for future research: Do learning resources lead to confidence in knowledge, or does confidence lead to awareness of existing resources? To what extent can TPACK be measured without first assessing the teacher's PCK? And how might we develop survey measures that reliably capture the complexity of technological pedagogical content knowledge? Understanding TPACK and the conditions under which it develops is an important field of research, as we strive to help teachers learn to use new technologies effectively to support powerful student learning.

How can instruction be adapted in response to the changing literacy landscape, and how can teachers and students exploit forms of reading and writing to enhance teaching and learning? *Transforming Society. What are the broad societal implications of the increasing prevalence of electronic forms of reading and writing? *Transforming Literacy Research. What are the questions that must be addressed as digital reading and writing become more common, and what approaches to research will be most useful in addressing those questions? This volume is the result of an interactive process. The contributors met as a group to discuss drafts of their chapters at a one-day meeting convened and sponsored by the National Reading Research Center, and had read each others' chapters prior to this gathering. That meeting was followed by a two-day conference attended by approximately 180 researchers, educators, and policymakers who responded to an open invitation to present papers and to attend sessions focusing on the six major themes of the book. Contributors then revised their chapters based on interactions with fellow contributors, conference participants, and volume editors. Thus, this work is more than just a compilation of the individual authors' views. Rather, it represents a synthesis of a broad range of current thinking about how literacy is being and may be transformed by technology.
