Book excerpt: Then My Living Shall Not Be in Vain By: Eunice Giles Morgan Walker Then My Living Shall Not Be in Vain is the memoir that covers the life-learnings and personal experiences of Orlean Wilson Dubuclet over a period of ninety-six years. It tells of how a simple mantra of “Where there is a will, there is a way” coupled with God’s favor can make dreams come true. The book is filled with “pearls of wisdom” as she relates what she learned at pivotal points in her life. She shares her childhood experiences of growing up in segregated Fort Worth, Texas in the early 1930s and as a fun loving teenager in Los Angeles during the late 1930s and into the 1940s. She also shares her encounters with racism both subtle and overt, and the hurt of losing a dear friend to a Japanese internment camp. She recounts sexual harassment on the job in the fifties, the highs and lows during marriage, and parenting experiences and challenges during married life and as a single mother. The attitude of “I am my brother’s keeper” started during early childhood years and continued in different ways into adulthood. Orelean provides evidence of this when talking about her 83 years as a contributing member of her beloved community and as a proud Los Angelano. She also talks about the founding of The Cooperettes, an organization that helps delinquent youths in the fifties and her dedication and commitment to the community through her work on the Unity Project which focused on creating new black business ownership in South Central Los Angeles following the Watts riots. She proudly shares how she finally achieved her childhood dream of owning and operating a specialty women’s dress shop and ends by highlighting the importance of remaining relevant even in retirement and the blessings of always being in “God’s Favor”.

Book excerpt: When we enter a building, we owe our sense of well-being to parts of the building that we do not see or recognize. It is the same with the local church. Pillars stand faithfully behind the walls apart from the eyes of human admiration to hold up the weight of the building. ‘PILLARS’ is a book that will prepare you to take your place behind the walls to support the local church on the solid footing of maturity. Paul Staack has written this book to call the body of Christ to responsible action. It is a manual for putting away childish things. The words in this work are not idle words. They are backed by 35 years of ministry experience in the same church. These chapters will give you a glimpse of a mature believer. Will you allow yourself to be poured into the mold of a pillar? If so, you will assume the mind and attitude of Christ. You will spend your life pouring yourself out in acts of love and service. You will taste the fruit of changed lives on the table of your influence and you will live the life you really want. The voice of a pillar in the church continues to speak to ensuing generations. This book will equip you to take your place as: ‘PILLARS’ THE INVISIBLE SUPPORT TEAM OF THE LOCAL CHURCH

Book excerpt: Widely practiced but not always understood, the Filipino martial arts have a rich history and distinctive character that have not fully been documented until now. Written in the context of Philippine history and culture, Filipino Martial Culture uncovers the esoteric components of the Filipino martial arts and the life histories of the men who perpetuate them. Included are: the history of turbulence and war in the Philippines from prehistoric times to the present day; the culture of the Filipino martial arts, including warrior ethos and worldview, spirituality, folklore, and weaponry; biographical sketches of eighteen Filipino masters and descriptions of their respective fighting styles; and a comparative study of the ethos, ideology, and development of the Filipino martial arts in relation to the considerable martial traditions of India, China, and Japan. In the course of his research, internationally renowned martial arts master and scholar Mark V. Wiley traveled the globe, interviewing top masters and recording their life histories, thoughts, and anecdotes. In addition, he collected 320 historical photographs and illustrations, including step-by-step sequences of the masters demonstrating the distinctive techniques of their particular martial styles. A classic reference for practitioners and researchers alike, this Filipino martial arts book is as much a definitive anthropological textbook as it is a practical guide to Arnis, Kali, Eskrima, and the other martial arts of the Philippines.

Book excerpt: Crites are tricksters (deceivers), stimulated by hypocrisy. Being a Crite is like a snake, very subtle. They cross many boundaries. Crites transcends families, denominations and cross partisan party lines. They gravitate to new heights, to being a "bigger than thy, to new lows; crabbing each other out, particularly in the netting game, taking advantage, luring, or enticing people through spiritual and other clever schemes. In the history of the Church, hypocrisy has always caused many of the major problems among the saints because of the wiles of the Evil One. The Saints of God must put on the Lord Jesus Christ, through faith in the Word of God, to bind up and to destroy the satanic powers of the Crites In The Church. Apostle H. Frank Hemby, Sr., is the founder and general Bishop of The First Biblican Church of Deliverance Inc., and the president of C T B O C D Inc. (Carrying The Banner of Christian Distinction) which is a Jehovah-Nissi Outreach Ministry, "Raising the Banner of the Lord" according to Exodus 17:15 and John 12:32. Apostle Hemby is an Army and Navy veteran and the recipient of the Bronze Star Medal; Valorous Unit Award. He has earned Citation Awards and Diplomas for outstanding achievement during his distinguished Insurance business career as a Life Underwriter Training Counsel Fellow (LUTCF). Apostle Hemby's greatest moments came through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, leading him to study, to pray and to meditate on the Word of God as he sits at the feet of Jesus Christ. From this position flows renewed vision and purpose. From vision and purpose, hope was truly birthed.

After many continuous perils in my life, I woke up one day and emerged from the rubble as a massive human force. I triumphantly succeeded after a lifetime of uncertainties. During the trials of my life, I metamorphosed into an unrecognizable, magnificent born-again creature, a person whom only time itself and great wisdom could reproduce.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The renowned leader in higher education provides “a testament to the power of aspiration, character and education to overcome poverty and adversity” (Michael L. Lomax, President & CEO, United Negro College Fund). Charlie Nelms had audaciously big dreams. Growing up black in the Deep South in the 1950s and 1960s, working in cotton fields, and living in poverty, Nelms dared to dream that he could do more with his life than work for white plantation owners sun-up to sun-down. Inspired by his parents, who first dared to dream that they could own their own land and have the right to vote, Nelms chose education as his weapon of choice for fighting racism and inequality. With hard work, determination, and the critical assistance of mentors who counseled him along the way, he found his way from the cotton fields of Arkansas to university leadership roles. Becoming the youngest and the first African American chancellor of a predominately white institution in Indiana, he faced tectonic changes in higher education during those ensuing decades of globalization, growing economic disparity, and political divisiveness. From Cotton Fields to University Leadership is an uplifting story about the power of education, the impact of community and mentorship, and the importance of dreaming big. “In his memoir, the realities of his life take on the qualities of a good docudrama, providing the back story to the development of a remarkable educational leader. His is ‘the examined life,’ filled with honesty, humor, and humility. While this is uniquely Charlie’s story, it is a story that will lift the hearts of many and inspire future generations of leaders.” —Betty J. Overton, Director, National Forum on Higher Education for the Public Good
