Book Synopsis Observing the Earth from space by : Cathy Dubois
Download or read book Observing the Earth from space written by Cathy Dubois and published by Dunod. This book was released on 2014-06-11 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breaking free of the Earth's surface to look down from above is longer a mere dream. Sophisticated instruments flown on satellites produce streams of data that, when inserted into complex information processes, increase our knowledge of the Earth system. Satellites have now revealed the limits and potential of our planet by making them “visible”. This book describes how satellite observation offers unique support in fields such as the management of natural environments, risk prevention and post-disaster management. Beginning with an historical review it then traces how data are constructed from the initial conception of measurements to their interpretation for use in operational systems. Ongoing sociological surveys sketch-out some of the difficulties to be overcome to allow more widespread use of satellite data. With the help of concrete examples such as emergency mapping for disaster management or monitoring of water resources, readers are shown how space-based observation offers potential cognitive resources for living on Earth while taking care of it.

Book Synopsis Thriving on Our Changing Planet by : National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Download or read book Thriving on Our Changing Planet written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-01-20 with total page 717 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live on a dynamic Earth shaped by both natural processes and the impacts of humans on their environment. It is in our collective interest to observe and understand our planet, and to predict future behavior to the extent possible, in order to effectively manage resources, successfully respond to threats from natural and human-induced environmental change, and capitalize on the opportunities â€" social, economic, security, and more â€" that such knowledge can bring. By continuously monitoring and exploring Earth, developing a deep understanding of its evolving behavior, and characterizing the processes that shape and reshape the environment in which we live, we not only advance knowledge and basic discovery about our planet, but we further develop the foundation upon which benefits to society are built. Thriving on Our Changing Planet presents prioritized science, applications, and observations, along with related strategic and programmatic guidance, to support the U.S. civil space Earth observation program over the coming decade.

Book Synopsis U.S. Space-based Remote Sensing by : Dana J. Johnson
Download or read book U.S. Space-based Remote Sensing written by Dana J. Johnson and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: U.S. space-based remote sensing programs and activities are facing a number of critical junctures in the coming decade. The U.S. government will have some critical decisions about its own requirements for exploiting remote sensing capabilities for environmental, meteorological, and national security uses, balanced against limited and decreasing budgets for those activities. Furthermore, there are ongoing debates within the Administration, in the Congress, and by the American public over the extent of the role government should play in fostering the commercial remote sensing sector. The explosion in geographical information system technologies for enhancing raw remote sensing data is also encouraging the development of a commercial market. These trends and others, such as expanding international capabilities, have combined to produce a dynamic remote sensing arena-an arena requiring a balanced approach to resource allocation and long-range planning. This Note presents a survey of remote sensing policy issues for the 1990s, with the purpose of assisting in the development of a future space-related RAND research agenda.

Book Synopsis Satellite Earth Observations and Their Impact on Society and Policy by : Masami Onoda
Download or read book Satellite Earth Observations and Their Impact on Society and Policy written by Masami Onoda and published by . This book was released on 2020-10-08 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The result of a workshop bringing together an international advisory board of experts in science, satellite technologies, industry innovations, and public policy, this book addresses the current and future roles of satellite Earth observations in solving large-scale environmental problems. The book showcases the results of engaging distinct communities to enhance our ability to identify emerging problems and to administer international regimes created to solve them. It also reviews the work of the Policy and Earth Observation Innovation Cycle (PEOIC) project, an effort aimed at assessing the impact of satellite observations on environmental policy and to propose a mission going forward that would launch an "innovation cycle". The achievements of such a mission would feed back to innovations in next-generation observation technology, thus contributing to global policy demand for policy-relevant information. Book Synopsis Earth Observation Data Policy by : Raymond Harris
Download or read book Earth Observation Data Policy written by Raymond Harris and published by Wiley. This book was released on 1997-12-29 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A critical issue which is fundamentally affecting the development of the Earth Observation sector is not so much the technology but the data policy. The conditions which govern access to the data, distribution of the data and the price of the data are now vital to the exploitation of this important environmental data resource. This book examines and analyses these data policy issues and recommends how the Earth observation sector can best develop appropriate and useful policies so that the scientific, operational and commercial value of the data can be maximised. This book provides a summary of the influences on Earth observation data policy and a review of the main organisations which develop Earth observation data policy including the United States, the committee on Earth Observation Satellites, the International Earth Observing System and space agencies such as the European Space Agency. The book analyses four key parts to Earth observation data policy: access to Earth observation data, data protection, pricing policy and data preservation. Details of the satellite Earth observation systems of the United States, Europe, Japan, Canada and other nations are included throughout the book. In preparing the book the author has interviewed over 70 experts in Earth observation data policy in Europe, the United States and Canada.
