Book Synopsis Théâtre et christianisme by : Charles Mazouer

The 40-odd studies revised for this volume explore the sometimes harmonious, often contentious relationship between French theatre and Christianity. Most focus on rather ancient works, from the Middle Ages to the era of classicism, but the 20th century is glimpsed at through the works of Péguy, Claudel and Mauriac.
Book Synopsis The Relationship Between the Church and the Theatre by : Christine C. Schnusenberg
Download or read book The Relationship Between the Church and the Theatre written by Christine C. Schnusenberg and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-06-12 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work has grown out of the question regarding the negative relationship of the Church Fathers toward the Roman theatre and the apparent subsequent theatre vacuum of over 400 years (ca. 530 AD to 930 AD). This is considered to be the time which lies between the end of the Roman theatre and the appearance of the quem quaeritis tropes. This work moves between these two poles: on the one hand, between the polemics against the pagan Roman theatre which the Church Fathers described as a theatrum daemonicum and on the other hand, the appearances of dramatic-liturgical configurations in the Christian Church. This work attempts to connect these two opposite poles instead of separating them. This study begins with an examination of documents dealing with the patristic polemic. This is followed by an examination in chronological sequence of the development of the liturgical dramatic manifestations from Jerusalem to Amalarius of Metz. It also examines the allegorical method connected with this development. In conclusion the argument is maintained that aside the theatrum daemonicum, a theatrum infictitium et sapirituale is beginning to develop.

Book Synopsis The Problem with The Dot by : Bruce D. Long
Download or read book The Problem with The Dot written by Bruce D. Long and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-03-02 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Problem with the Dot is rooted in the idea that culture is a garden to be tended (Gen 2:15) rather than a war to be won and uses the analogy of an ecosystem to expand the details of the individual components of the theatrical ecosystem to: 1.Help those with minimal exposure to theater understand the indivisible construct of the theatrical ecosystem; 2.Identify areas of Christian neglect within each component; and 3.Emphasize strategic corrections that will result in the holistic restoration of a healthy global culture. Each chapter strengthens the case for a long-term holistic approach to the care and cultivation of global culture through the theatrical ecosystem, culminating in a call to action that is magnified by the unique opportunity presented by the 2020 global pandemic that forced a hiatus on all theatrical productions. The market will reset, and artists will revive theaters. It is my prayer that when this grand reopening occurs around the globe, Christians are an integral part of the new beginning.

Book Synopsis Moving Subjects by : Kathleen M. Ashley
Download or read book Moving Subjects written by Kathleen M. Ashley and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2001 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Procession, arguably the most ubiquitous and versatile public performance mode until the seventeenth century, has received little scholarly or theoretical attention. Yet, this form of social behaviour has been so thoroughly naturalised in our accounts of western European history that it merited little comment as a cultural performance choice over many centuries until recently, when a generation of cultural historians using explanatory models from anthropology called attention to the processional mode as a privileged vehicle for articulation in its society. Their analyses, however, tended to focus on the issue of whether processions produced social harmony or reinforced social distinctions, potentially leading to conflict. While such questions are not ignored in this collection of essays, its primary purpose is to reflect upon salient theatrical aspects of processions that may help us understand how in the performance of "moving subjects" they accomplished their often transformative cultural work.
