Book excerpt: I believe in Christian Theater Ministries. Nothing capture the attention, imagination, minds, and hearts like live theater. From minutes to hours, an audience or congregation goes wherever you want them to - from their own living rooms to the foot of the cross - and with every step, they become part of both story and message. I'm convinced there's no better way to excite and nurture God's people than a dramatic, theatrical event. Thankfully, these events don't have to be EVENTS! They can be as simple as flipping a light switch, or as complex as parting the Red Sea. But whatever you have time, energy and resources to produce will make a huge impact for our savior and His people. Theater Ministry helps you, step by step, to get a theater ministry going at your church or Christian school. It looks at where such a ministry has its greatest impact, and the various shapes it can take - from something simple that assists a pastor delivering his message, to an elaborate full length play or musical whose aim is to evangelize a community. Wherever God is leading your creative heart, this book will get you there.

In A Dramatic Ministry for Small Churches, author Holly Langster shares a collection of inspiring and entertaining dramatic plays that are perfect for a small church that needs something to engage and encourage its attendees—especially kids! She offers several scripts and helpful tips for anyone starting a drama program in their own church. It doesn’t take a big church to perform a big play, and A Dramatic Ministry for Small Churches can help small churches discover a new and dramatic way to excite young believers about the gospel message. And as more and more people get involved, these small churches will grow and grow, inspiring the next generation and bringing more people to Christ.

It is indeed an honor and pleasure for me to share with you valuable information that will elevate your mime and drama ministry to a new dimension of worship. By the end of this handbook my prayer is that you will be equipped to minister to the masses like never before. As you read and begin to implement the wisdom that flows within, please keep this thought in the forefront of your mind: (Your growth in ministry depends heavily on your willingness to never stop learning and to never stop worshiping the Lord) God is a forward moving God. So in other words, stop using the plans and utensils from yesterday for your today. Implement the plan that God is currently using (Present) not what He used (Past). What He USED was necessary to get you to where you are now. It serves as your reminder, your testimony for others. "One of the key elements to creativity is the ability to embrace its openness. The positive power and energy that exudes from the arts cannot be contained in a box mentality." Such thinking chokes the life out of creativity causing it to become stale, boring, and ineffective. Therefore my goal is to instill fresh, innovative, creative ideas along with proper instructions to mime and performing arts ministries, by introducing the marriage of mime and drama - (Mime-O-Drama). I encourage you to align your lifestyle, your creativity with the anointing of the Holy Spirit and become one. This unity creates an atmosphere where true ministry takes place. Miracles, signs and wonders become the norm. Broken hearts are mended, the chains of bondage are broken, the vital breath of healing, deliverance and salvation flow into the lives of both the believer and non-believer. (Isaiah 61:1 - 3) says: "The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified." "Understanding your Holy calling equips you to live a lifestyle befitting of the call to be effective in ministry of mime and drama." The principle that sustains this handbook can be found in: (2nd Timothy 2: 15) says: "Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not be ashamed rightly dividing the word of truth." "It is my earnest prayer that God will impart a fresh fire anointing upon your ministry. We as ministers of the performing arts have the ultimate responsibility to uplift the name of Jesus to the nations at all times. The lifestyle we live before our peers should serve as a light on a hill which would lead those searching, to find Christ." So let us lay aside the spirit of competition, entertainment, and personal gratification for the greater good. Let us therefore center our attention on Jesus Christ and illustrate HIS truth which is entrenched in the Word of God. - Minister Christopher Bailey, Sr.-

Book excerpt: The Cultural Politics of Twentieth-Century Spanish Theater argues that twentieth-century artists used the Golden Age Eucharist plays called autos sacramentales to reassess the way politics and the arts interact in the Spanish nation’s past and present, and to posit new ideas for future relations between the state and the national culture industry. The book traces the phenomenon of the twentieth-century auto to show how theater practitioners revisited this national genre to manifest different, oftentimes opposing, ideological and aesthetic agendas. It follows the auto from the avant-garde stagings and rewritings of the form in the early twentieth century, to the Francoist productions by the Teatro Nacional de la Falange, to postmodern parodies of the form in the era following Franco’s death to demonstrate how twentieth-century Spanish dramatists use the auto in their reassessment of the nation’s political and artistic past, and as a way of envisioning its future.

Book excerpt: During the Russian Revolution and Civil War, amateur theater groups sprang up in cities across the country. Workers, peasants, students, soldiers, and sailors provided entertainment ranging from improvisations to gymnastics and from propaganda sketches to the plays of Chekhov. In Revolutionary Acts, Lynn Mally reconstructs the history of the amateur stage in Soviet Russia from 1917 to the height of the Stalinist purges. Her book illustrates in fascinating detail how Soviet culture was transformed during the new regime's first two decades in power. Of all the arts, theater had a special appeal for mass audiences in Russia, and with the coming of the revolution it took on an important role in the dissemination of the new socialist culture. Mally's analysis of amateur theater as a space where performers, their audiences, and the political authorities came into contact enables her to explore whether this culture emerged spontaneously "from below" or was imposed by the revolutionary elite. She shows that by the late 1920s, Soviet leaders had come to distrust the initiatives of the lower classes, and the amateur theaters fell increasingly under the guidance of artistic professionals. Within a few years, state agencies intervened to homogenize repertoire and performance style, and with the institutionalization of Socialist Realist principles, only those works in a unified Soviet canon were presented.

Book excerpt: Faith and Drama contains thirty-four short plays and dramatic readings that have been performed in churches, youth groups, conferences and special events in the Middle East as part of a Christian theater ministry. In places where people don't have the opportunity to read or study the Bible for themselves, it is all the more important that each play reflect the message of the Gospel. And so these pieces were written to be entertaining, practical, and deeply meaningful. "Jesus spoke all these things to the crowd in parables; he did not say anything to them without using a parable" (Matthew 13:34 NIV). "I said, 'Sovereign Lord, they are saying of me-isn't he just telling parables?'" (Ezekiel 20:49 NIV).

Book excerpt: This volume explores the phenomenon and trend of cultural buildings by investigating 10 typical cities in China from the first, second, and third tiers, and from the Chinese diaspora. Each grand theater design was the result of a high-profile international competition and created by global architects in collaboration with Chinese design institutes. The national and international significance of these iconic projects lies in the fact that they not only reflect the dynamics of global design ideas, but also represent a particular historical moment in China’s modernization process. The development, histories, and purposes of constructing cultural buildings are carefully outlined and colorfully presented. Given China’s tremendous population, the development trajectory of its urban construction will provide insights for other regions that hope to embark on the high-speed track in the 21st century. “In 'Grand Theater Urbanism', Professor Charlie Xue and his team document China’s current shift towards a culture of consumption and leisure, symbolized by the construction of multi-use Grand Theaters in major cities. 'Grand Theater Urbanism' reveals the unexpected variety and complexity of this contemporary cultural drive in a series of exemplary chapters with highly detailed, local, case studies.” --Professor David Grahame Shane, Columbia University, New York "Jane Jacobs likened city life to a performance. This book goes a stage further and analyses the actual performance spaces within cities in China. In doing so it makes a valuable connection between urban design and the cultural life in cities. This is an important and often forgotten dimension of urbanism and I heartily commend this book to readers.'" --Professor Matthew Carmona, The Bartlett, University College London
