Download or read book A Teaching Artist at Work written by Barbara McKean and published by Heinemann Educational Books. This book was released on 2006 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The works presented are moving and impressive; their authenticity and tone in harmony with the story teller's voice. The story itself may open new windows ... for those intent on enriching and humanizing what occurs in contemporary schools. - Maxine Greene A fabulous book for arts and theater education. -Merryl Goldberg Author of Integrating the Arts, Third Edition Are you a theatre teaching artist, or considering it? No matter what kind of educational setting you're in, the theatre skills you teach are intimately linked to your own artistry: you've got to know how to teach from your own practice while you learn to practice the art of teaching. The key is discovering how the educational setting, the students, and the stage link. A Teaching Artist at Work helps theatre teaching artists develop connections between their pedagogical and artistic selves. The book presents a framework for thinking about the work of teaching artists in general and theatre teaching artists in particular. Through descriptive examinations of practice, the book also provides theatre teaching artists and those who prepare and work beside them with concrete examples of three theatre-education projects in three different educational settings as well as the collaborative processes that helped them succeed. Replicable in other settings-such as community outreach programs, after school and summer programs hosted by professional theatres, and not-for-profit educational theatres-these projects provide a jumping-off point for others who work to create interesting theatre curriculum. In any educational setting, theatre teaching artists create spaces where teachers and students can envision a new, different, and exciting way of learning and doing that they can apply to theatre education and many other content areas. With emphasis on linking personal artistry with pedagogical artistry and examples drawn from McKean's own practice, A Teaching Artist At Work is an invaluable resource for teaching artists and the arts-education community.
Book Synopsis The Art of Resonance by : Anne Bogart
Download or read book The Art of Resonance written by Anne Bogart and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-08-26 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is artistic resonance and how can it be linked to one's life and one's art? This latest book of essays from legendary theatre director Anne Bogart, considers the creation of resonance in the artistic endeavour, with a focus on the performing arts. The word 'resonance' comes from the Latin meaning to 're-sound' or 'sound together'. From music to physics, resonance is a common thread that evokes a response and, in general, is understood as a quality that makes something personally meaningful and valuable. For Bogart, curiosity is a key personal quality to be nurtured throughout life and that very same curiosity, as an artist, thinker and human being. Creating pathways between performance theory, art history, neuroscience, music, architecture and the visual arts, and consistently forging new thought-paths, the writing draws upon Anne Bogart's own life and artistic journeys to illuminate potent philosophical ideas. Woven with personal anecdotes, stories and reflections, this is a book that will be of interest to any theatre artist and anyone who reflects on the power of the arts, of theatre-making and what it means to be engaged in the artistic process.

Book Synopsis The Unfinished Art of Theater by : Sarah J. Townsend
Download or read book The Unfinished Art of Theater written by Sarah J. Townsend and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-15 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A certain idea of the avant-garde posits the possibility of a total rupture with the past. The Unfinished Art of Theater pulls back on this futuristic impulse by showing how theater became a key site for artists on the semiperiphery of capitalism to reconfigure the role of the aesthetic between 1917 and 1934. The book argues that this “unfinished art”—precisely because of its historic weakness as a representative institution in Mexico and Brazil, where the bourgeois stage had not (yet) coalesced—was at the forefront of struggles to redefine the relationship between art and social change. Drawing on extensive archival research, Sarah J. Townsend reveals the importance of projects and texts that belie the rhetoric of rupture and immediacy associated with the avant-garde: ethnographic operas with ties to the recording industry, populist puppet plays, children’s radio programs about the wonders of technology, a philosophical drama about the birth of a new race, and an antifascist spectacle written for (but never performed at) a theater shut down by the police. Ultimately, the book makes the case that the very category of avant-garde art is bound up in the experience of dependency, delay, and the uneven development of capitalism.

Book Synopsis Children's Theater by : Kelly Eggers
Download or read book Children's Theater written by Kelly Eggers and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2010-04-09 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces readers to the world of children's theater by highlighting one specific model, The Oyster River Players, a small children's theater company in New Hampshire. By exploring the history and dynamics of their own theater company, authors Kelly and Walter Eggers apply broader implications, expanding their focus to include children's theaters of other kinds and in different cultural settings. Throughout the book, the Eggers show how children's theater succeeds in helping young people learn in ways that would be otherwise inaccessible. Through forays into philosophy and history, as well as personal testimonies, the authors present a coherent argument for the need for children's theaters in nearly every community.
