Book excerpt: Having survived Borneo, Amazonia, and the Congo, the indefatigable Redmond O’Hanlon sets off on his next adventure: his own perfect storm, in the wild waters off the northern tip of Scotland. Equipped with a fancy Nikon, an excessive supply of socks, and no seamanship whatsoever, O’Hanlon joins the commercial fishing crew of the Norlantean, a deep-sea trawler, to stock a bottomless hull with their catch, even as a hurricane roars around them. Rich in oceanography, marine biology, and uproarious humor, Trawler is Redmond O’Hanlon at his finest.

Download or read book Beyond Trawlertown written by Jo Byrne and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2021-12-14 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond Trawlertown takes a journey through the British distant-water fishery and its port-city connections in an era of disruption. In 1976, defeat in the Anglo-Icelandic Cod Wars saw the British trawling fleet excluded from their traditional hunting grounds. Combining with wider global factors, the move brought an end to long-established trawling practices, with profound social, economic and cultural repercussions. Through a case study of the port of Hull, oral history and archival research explore the challenges, responses and legacy of rapid change. Although the emphasis is on Hull, this is far from a local history. Hull’s position among the world leading distant-water pioneers gives the story international significance. Focusing on memory, lived experience and place, the book goes beyond established narratives. Personal acts of remembering offer cultural perspectives on how global events and marine policy impact upon the seafaring communities that live with the consequences. The Cod Wars signaled an end, yet amid the disruption there were also new beginnings. And in the wake of an active fishery, the rhythms of the past continue to resonate in the negotiation of fishing heritage within the contemporary city. Through the convergence of time, place and memory, this holistic narrative of interweaving stories reveals the intricacies of our human interaction with the marine environment and the aftermath when its threads are broken.

Scott Douglas Gerber, author of The Law Clerk and The Ivory Tower Captain Stephen Erickson is sent to Guyana, where he runs into West Point pal Andrew Rambarran. A government overthrow is imminent, but will Steves dedication to his old friend cause trouble? Guyana, South America, 1979, was not a free and easy place to be. The Kabaka Party ruled the government and the streets. They carried swagger sticks, wore heavy leather boots, and called each other comrade. They had promised to make the small man into a real man; instead they brought poverty, starvation, and racial mistrust to a nation once hopeful, but now disgruntled. American Captain Stephen Erikson accepts his post as Assistant Military Attach in Guyana, aware that a military coup might be in the offing. Hes happy to reconnect with his old West Point pal, Captain Andrew Rambarran, serving in the Guyanese army. While rekindling his friendship with Andrew, Steve meets Anita, Andrews cousin. She is beautiful and intelligent, and Steve cant help but fall for her. Steves loyalties become severely tested when the military plan to take down the Kabaka Party moves the country into a state of uproar. Should Steve be true to his friend, Andrew, or to his countrys interests in the affair? More importantly, will either he or Andrew live to find out?

Download or read book K Boat Catastrophe written by N. S. Nash and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2009-07-19 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 31 January 1918 nine K Class steam-powered submarines sailed with the Grand Fleet to Exercise in the North Sea. The ships left the Firth of Forth at a speed of 21 knots on a cold winter night with the flagship HMS Courageous leading the way. Following in her wake was HMS Ithuriel and the K Class submarines of the 13th Submarine Flotilla and then 5 nautical miles astern of them, four more capital warships. As they approached The Isle of May navigational confusion broke out, caused by the misinterpretation of ship's steaming lights and mayhem followed. During the next couple of hours five collisions occurred involving eight ships and resulting in the death of 105 officers and ratings. This fiasco and the resulting naval investigation and court marshal were shielded from the general public and kept in secret files until the full details were released in 1994. From this official report, the author now tells the full story of that dreadful night and the proceedings that followed. Background information on the evolution of the ill-fated and much hated K Class submarines is also included together with the investigation and court marshal proceedings of the events surrounding that tragic night.
