Book excerpt: Broadhalfpenny Down is the Mecca of cricket. The Bat and Ball Inn across the road is pavilion to the whole cricket world. This is the home of the legendary 18th-century Hambledon Club. Every cricketer wants to visit it because they know this is where cricket began. Only it didn't.That Broadhalfpenny Down is the birthplace of cricket is one of the most well-established myths in sporting history. Yet this ground still holds a unique place in the history of the game. It is where a simple country pastime evolved into a national sport; where the crude techniques of the first players evolved into subtler skills.Between the 1750s and late 1790s, Broadhalfpenny Down staged the biggest matches and fielded the most famous team, playing 'all' England 51 times and winning on 29 occasions - often in front of 20,000 spectators. Here for the first time since 1907 is a full account of the events of more than 200 years ago. Extensively researched and compiled, and updated for this 2015 ebook edition, its author Ashley Mote played competitive club cricket for more than 50 years. He is a non-playing member of numerous cricket clubs. A former journalist, scriptwriter, and businessman, he now writes non-fiction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his important contribution to the growing field of sports literature, Anthony Bateman traces the relationship between literary representations of cricket and Anglo-British national identity from 1850 to the mid 1980s. Examining newspaper accounts, instructional books, fiction, poetry, and the work of editors, anthologists, and historians, Bateman elaborates the ways in which a long tradition of literary discourse produced cricket's cultural status and meaning. His critique of writing about cricket leads to the rediscovery of little-known texts and the reinterpretation of well-known works by authors as diverse as Neville Cardus, James Joyce, the Great War poets, and C.L.R. James. Beginning with mid-eighteenth century accounts of cricket that provide essential background, Bateman examines the literary evolution of cricket writing against the backdrop of key historical moments such as the Great War, the 1926 General Strike, and the rise of Communism. Several case studies show that cricket simultaneously asserted English ideals and created anxiety about imperialism, while cricket's distinctively colonial aesthetic is highlighted through Bateman's examination of the discourse surrounding colonial cricket tours and cricketers like Prince Kumar Shri Ranjitsinhji of India and Sir Learie Constantine of Trinidad. Featuring an extensive bibliography, Bateman's book shows that, while the discourse surrounding cricket was key to its status as a symbol of nation and empire, the embodied practice of the sport served to destabilise its established cultural meaning in the colonial and postcolonial contexts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marcus Berkmann, author of the cricket classics Rain Men and Zimmer Men, returns to the great game with this irresistible miscellany of cricketing trivia, stories and more fascinating facts than Geoffrey Boycott could shake a stick of rhubarb at. Which England captain smoked two million cigarettes in his lifetime? Which Australian captain, asked what his favourite animal was, said 'Merv Hughes'? What did Hitler think of cricket? Which National Hunt trainer had a dog called Sobers? Who was described in his obituary as 'perhaps the only unequivocally popular man in Yorkshire'? No other sport is so steeped in oddness and eccentricity. There's the only Test player ever to be executed for murder, the only first-class cricketer to die on the Titanic, and the only bestselling author to catch fire while playing at Lord's. (It was Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The ball hit a box of matches in his pocket.) All cricket is here, including an XI entirely made up of players who share their names with freshwater fish.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I wrote this book because, like many others, I found George Young an inspiration. It seemed it would be valuable to share his story, using his own words, wherever possible. He was a man of many and varied talents. An exceptionally gifted teacher at Colchester Royal Grammar School - the bookís appendix consists of 36 individualsí memories of his impact on them. They became his friends for as many as 60 years after leaving school and helped raise funds for a fine building as a memorial to him. Yet his influence and contribution extended far beyond the school. He had a distinguished career as an officer with the Green Howards during the Second World War and was awarded the Military Cross. Even after his retirement from teaching he continued to perform on the theatre and Music Hall stages until after his 90th birthday, receiving a national award at the age of 91 as the oldest regular amateur performer in the country. His huge contribution to the theatrical life of Colchester as an actor and director with local drama groups included raising funds to assist with the establishment of the Mercury Theatre. Open any page in this book for a fascinating insight into Georgeís character and wisdom, his wit and his accomplishments. It feels right to have a remarkable life such as his recorded for posterity.
