Book excerpt: Marina Richie's pursuit of the belted kingfisher is one of curiosity and kinship with a wild creekside community in Missoula, Montana. The first book to feature North America's beloved bird of waterways, Halcyon Journey threads natural history, memoir, and myth. Epiphanies and a citizen science discovery punctuate Richie's seven seasons tracking a skittish pair of birds. The female is more colorful than the male (unusual and puzzling) and the birds' earthen nest holes are fiendishly difficult to locate. Far-flung adventures to other continents in search of kingfisher kin deepen the author's relationship with Montana birds. In winter, she explores tribal stories of the kingfisher as messenger and helper. By the water's edge, she reconciles the loss of her naturalist father and taps into her own powers, inspired by the bird of the headfirst plunge and rattling call. Book jacket.

This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: HIS RULING IDEAS AND AIMS LET me here summarize some of the ideas and principles in which Leaves of Grass has its root, and from which it starts. A collection of poems in the usual sense, a variety of themes artistically treated and appealing to our aesthetic perceptibilities alone, it is not. It has, strictly speaking, but one theme, ? personality, the personality of the poet himself. To exploit this is always the main purpose, and, in doing so, to make the book both directly and indirectly a large, impassioned utterance upon all the main problems of life and of nationality. It is primitive, like the early literature of a race or people, in that its spirit and purpose are essentially religious. It is like the primitive literatures also in its prophetic cry and in its bardic simplicity and homeliness, and unlike them in its faith and joy and its unconquerable optimism. It has been not inaptly called the bible of democracy. Its biblical features are obvious enough with the darker negative traits left out. It is Israel with science and the modern added. Whitman was swayed by a few great passions, ? the passion for country, the passion for comrades, the cosmic passion, etc. His first concern seems always to have been for his country. He has touched no theme, named no man, not related in some way to America. The thought of it possessed him as thoroughly as the thought of Israel possessed the old Hebrew prophets. Indeed, it is the same passion, and flames up with the same vitality and power, ? the same passion for race and nativity enlightened by science and suffused with the modern humanitarian spirit. Israel was exclusive and cruel. Democracy, as exemplified in Walt Whitman, is compassionate and all-inclusive: ? My spirit has passed in compassion and determination ...
Book Synopsis The Burroughs Cyclopædia by : Clark A. Brady
Download or read book The Burroughs Cyclopædia written by Clark A. Brady and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2024-10-14 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edgar Rice Burroughs was not satisfied with creating characters and events within the world that we know; instead he created whole new worlds for histories, and he filled them with peoples, languages, cities, wars, plants, machines, and monsters that were believable to the reader, yet still alien and fantastic enough to thrill and delight. From A-Kor, the keeper of the Towers of Jetan in Manator, through Zytheb, one of the priests of Brulor in Ashair, this is a comprehensive reference to the fantastic worlds of Burroughs. Each entry provides a complete definition, along with a reference to the book in which the entry appeared. For terms, the language, either actual (e.g., Latin and French) or Burroughs-created (e.g., The Tongue of the Great Ape or Pal-ul-don), from which it was derived is given.
