Book Synopsis High-Impact Weather Events over the SAARC Region by : Kamaljit Ray
Download or read book High-Impact Weather Events over the SAARC Region written by Kamaljit Ray and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-19 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a compilation of papers contributed by researchers and scientists from SAARC nations and deals with high-impact weather conditions, their prediction and potential consequences for populations in the SAARC region. There have been a number of recent advances in our understanding and prediction of cyclones, severe thunderstorms, squalls, heat and cold waves, droughts and heavy rainfall, based on the latest observational data and NWP modeling platform. The SAARC region is vulnerable to high-impact weather events because of geophysical features like high mountains, plateaus and vast oceans. As our climate continues to change over the coming years, the likelihood of extreme and potentially high-impact weather and climate events will be at its highest when natural and anthropogenic effects combine. All chapters were written by leading experts in their respective research and operational fields. The book reviews the latest research, future needs, forecasting skills and societal impacts of extreme weather events and offers high-quality reference material for weather forecasters, disaster managers and researchers.

Book Synopsis Global Climate Change and Environmental Refugees by : Pardeep Singh
Download or read book Global Climate Change and Environmental Refugees written by Pardeep Singh and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-02-18 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the possibilities of understanding the concept of climate refugees in order to ascribe to a consensual agreement that climate refugees are evident and this situation is a reality. A framework to study both empirically and theoretically is presented in a detailed manner so that it may become a resource for understanding the challenges of climate refugees. Through discussion and analysis the book presents potential answers to such questions as: ● Why has the international system been so short-sighted and has not given importance to the problems of climate migrants and refugees? ● How to identify a climate refugee? ● How do you justify a climate refugee or a migrant? ● What are internally displaced people? Should we call them just refugees? The book covers the interdisciplinary nature of climate refugees and the perspectives of social science. The empirical findings provides an edge to holistically understanding climate refugees. This book discusses the concept of, what really is a climate refugee, and the necessary factors to make it an important part of the climate discourse. The legality of the term is missing in international parlance, and the academic discourse should provide the necessary critique required for the evolution of the subject under study. Therefore, the major objective of the book is to make the subject of climate migration known to all.

How Design Determines the Urban Climate' explains and illustrates in a comprehensible way how smart urban design can enhance comfort in the city. The way we experience the urban climate depends on physical and psychological factors dictated by our surroundings. This book uses these factors to explain how the basic processes of the urban climate work and how they can be influenced by spatial planning and urban design. Richly illustrated with photographs, diagrams and practical examples Weather in the City is both a reference work and a source of inspiration for all those working to enhance the quality of city life: commissioners, policymakers, professionals and students in urban design, landscape architecture and planning. --Provided by Publisher.

Book Synopsis Weather: A Very Short Introduction by : Storm Dunlop
Download or read book Weather: A Very Short Introduction written by Storm Dunlop and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-01-19 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From deciding the best day for a picnic, to the devastating effects of hurricanes and typhoons, the weather impacts our lives on a daily basis. Although new techniques allow us to forecast the weather with increasing accuracy, most people do not realise the vast global movements and forces which result in their day-to-day weather. In this Very Short Introduction Storm Dunlop explains what weather is and how it differs from climate, discussing what causes weather, and how we measure it. Analysing the basic features and properties of the atmosphere, he shows how these are directly related to the weather experienced on the ground, and to specific weather phenomena and extreme weather events. He describes how the global patterns of temperature and pressure give rise to the overall circulation within the atmosphere, the major wind systems, and the major oceanic currents, and how features such as mountains and the sea affect local weather. He also looks at examples of extreme and dangerous weather, such as of tropical cyclones (otherwise known as hurricanes and typhoons), describing how 'Hurricane Hunters' undertake the dangerous task of flying through them. We measure weather in a number of ways: observations taken on the land and sea; observations within the atmosphere; and measurements from orbiting satellites. Dunlop concludes by looking at how these observations have been used to develop increasingly sophisticated long- and short-range weather forecasting, including ensemble forecasting.
