Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World's Eulogies on President Garfield Mamma, is there somebody dead in everybody's house to-day? N o, dear, said the mother, there is not some one dead in everybody's house today, but everybody has lost a friend. The eulogies in this volume have been pronounced by the best orators of the day, upon one of the grandest themes of the age - a perfect man - which necessarily called forth the best possible effort. For eloquence, pathos and general instru'ction-so far as we may learn from the exam ple of an upright man - they are as unparalleled in the his tory of literature as is the great Memorial Day, with its three hundred millions of sorrowing hearts, unparalleled in the history of human sympathy. It was in Hiram that he fitted for college, and that he made his reputation as a teacher and school administrator. Hiram was his home for twenty-six years. Much Of that time, probably one-half of it, he spent in other places and duties, - college, the army, and Congress; but Hiram was the place to which he looked for residence and rest. TO those who have become acquainted with him, his name or fame, the last four years, Mentor means more than Hiram; but to all of his earlier friends Hiram means as much more than Mentor, as his residence in the one place was longer than his residence in the other. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life, Speeches, and Public Services of James a Garfield: Twentieth President of the United States; Including an Account of His Assassination, Lingering Pain, Death, and Burial MY dear colonel, In answer to your letter, I regret very much that I have not time to write an extended introduction to your biography of General Garfield, which, now that his noble life is ended, I am glad to know is to be revised and again published. I cordially furnish you, however, my remarks at the dinner, last July, of the alumni of Williams College. But no tribute can do justice either to him or to the deep and loving sentiment of admiration and sym pathy in which he is held in the hearts of the peo ple. The best tribute is in the simple story of his heroic and ascending life and character. The youth of America will read it, and be reminded that they, too, can make their lives sublime. Arthur, nominees of the Republican party for Presi dent and vice-president, for a period of four years, beginning March 4, 1881. NO one can be more sen sible than myself of its incompleteness. Garfield: Twentieth President of the United States; A Biographical Sketch Few words of mine can add anything to the story of the present First Magistrate of the United States as graphically told here. The Author has given his reason for telling that story in the fact that, until the first Tuesday in November, 1880, the life and name of the man who to-day takes his place among the'poten tates of the world, was doubtless unknown to the English public. But as it is equally true that the Author of General Garfield's history is still less known to an English audience than his hero, it is my wish to say, briefly that, as friend, colleague, and compatriot of. The Author of this book, I have known him. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nation's Hero in Memoriam: The Life of James Abram Garfield, Twentieth President of the United States; With an Account of the President's Death and Funeral Obsequies Let us look into this as far and as clearly as dim or scanty' records and traditions will enable us to see. It is tolerably certain that the male ancestor of the American Garfields was one of that picked company of men, women, and children, who came over in the ship which bore Governor Win throp to the Massachusetts shores, and it is absolutely certain that this ancestor, Edward Garfield, was one of the one hun dr'ed and six proprietors of Watertown, now a lovely suburb of Boston, for he is so recorded in 1635. It 1s undoubtedly true -for all the circumstances prove it - that Edward Garfield was one of those men whose religion was so heroic and practical that they coolly and patiently encountered the dangers and priva tions and sufferings that would have appalled nine tenths of Norman William's adventurous, freebooting founders of the nobility of conquered England, and with notions as much higher than those of the Norman-robbers as the heavens are higher than the earth. But in Massachusetts, in the seven teenth century, a quiet and sustained heroism was so common that individual heroes rarely got special mention. So, all that is known of Edward Garfield is that he lived to be ninety - seven years old, thereby, according to Carlyle's maxim, showing much virtue, and setting an example to his descendants Which has been well'observed.
