Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World as Will and Idea, Vol. 2 IT is much easier to point out the faults and errors in the work of a great mind than to give a distinct and full exposition of its value. For the faults are particular and finite, and can therefore be fully comprehended while, on the contrary, the very stamp which genius impresses upon its works is that their excellence is unfathomable and in exhaustible. Therefore they do not grow old, but become the instructor of many succeeding centuries. The per fected masterpiece of a truly great mind will always pro duce a deep and powerful effect upon the Whole human race, so much so that it is impossible to calculate to what distant centuries and lands its enlightening influence may extend. This is always the case; for however cultivated and rich the age may be in which such a masterpiece appears, genius always rises like a palm-tree above the soil in which it is rooted. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finally available, a high quality book of the original classic edition of The World As Will And Idea (Vol. 1 of 3). It was previously published by other bona fide publishers, and is now, after many years, back in print. This is a new and freshly published edition of this culturally important work by Arthur Schopenhauer, which is now, at last, again available to you. Enjoy this classic work today. These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside The World As Will And Idea (Vol. 1 of 3): But only if we have fully recognised [pg xi] by means of that essay what the principle of sufficient reason is and signifies, what its validity extends to, and what it does not extend to, and that that principle is not before all things, and the whole world merely in consequence of it, and in conformity to it, a corollary, as it were, of it; but rather that it is merely the form in which the object, of whatever kind it may be, which is always conditioned by the subject, is invariably known so far as the subject is a knowing individual: only then will it be possible to enter into the method of philosophy which is here attempted for the first time, and which is completely different from all previous methods. ...And while the lapse of time has not been able to make me doubt the worth of my work, neither has the lack of sympathy; for I constantly saw the false and the bad, and finally the absurd and senseless,2 stand in universal admiration and honour, and I bethought myself that if it were not the case those who are capable of recognising the genuine and right are so rare that we may look for them in vain for some twenty years, then those who are capable of producing it could not be so few that their works afterwards form an exception to the perishableness of earthly things; and thus would be lost the reviving prospect of posterity which every one who sets before himself a high aim requires to strengthen him. ...While thus philosophy has long been obliged to serve entirely as a means to public ends on the one side and private ends on the other, I have pursued the course of my thought, undisturbed by them, for more than thirty years, and simply because I was obliged to do so and could not help myself, from an instinctive impulse, which [pg xxi] was, however, supported by the confidence that anything true one may have thought, and anything obscure one may have thrown light upon, will appeal to any thinking mind, no matter when it comprehends it, and will rejoice and comfort it. ...We have already observed that it is a highly important discovery of Kant's, that these very conditions, these forms of the visible world, i.e., the absolutely universal element in its perception, the common property of all its phenomena, space and time, even when taken by themselves and apart from their content, can, not only be thought in the abstract, but also be directly perceived; and that this perception or intuition is not some kind of phantasm arising from constant recurrence in experience, but is so entirely independent of experience that we must rather regard the latter as dependent on it, inasmuch as the qualities of space and time, as they are known in a priori perception or intuition, are valid for all possible experience, as rules to which it must invariably conform.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 'The World as Will and Idea' by Arthur Schopenhauer, the author presents his philosophical masterpiece in three volumes, exploring the nature of the world as perceived through the lens of individual will and idea. Schopenhauer's literary style is characterized by its depth and clarity, making complex philosophical concepts accessible to a wide range of readers. Drawing on ideas from Western and Eastern philosophies, he delves into metaphysics, aesthetics, and ethics, offering a comprehensive and profound analysis of human existence. The book is considered a seminal work in the realm of metaphysical philosophy, influencing thinkers such as Nietzsche and Freud. Arthur Schopenhauer, a German philosopher known for his pessimistic views on life and an influence on existential philosophy, wrote 'The World as Will and Idea' as a culmination of his philosophical thought. His deep contemplation on the nature of reality and the human experience is evident in the meticulous arguments presented throughout the volumes. I highly recommend 'The World as Will and Idea' to readers interested in delving into profound philosophical inquiries and exploring the nature of existence. Schopenhauer's work offers a thought-provoking journey into the complexities of the human mind and the world around us, challenging readers to examine their own perceptions and understanding of reality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the greatest philosophers of the nineteenth century, Schopenhauer (1788-1860) believed that human action is determined not by reason but by 'will' - the blind and irrational desire for physical existence. This selection of his writings on religion, ethics, politics, women, suicide, books and many other themes is taken from Schopenhauer's last work, Parerga and Paralipomena, which he published in 1851. These pieces depict humanity as locked in a struggle beyond good and evil, and each individual absolutely free within a Godless world, in which art, morality and self-awareness are our only salvation. This innovative - and pessimistic - view has proved powerfully influential upon philosophy and art, directly affecting the work of Nietzsche, Wittgenstein and Wagner among others.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Philosophy, Vol. 2 of 3 In accordance with the character of the different epochs, modern philosophy has to rise above the philosophical wisdom of the ancients and the theological wisdom of lthe imiddle Ages. N o theories will meet the requirements of modern times, nor deserve the name of philosophy except such as recognise both the here, or real, of antiquity, and the hereafter, or ideal, of the Middle Ages, and attempt to reconcile the two. Any system which left one of these sides out.of account, or which did not admit that there was a point where the two coincided, would cease to be philosophical.' And the differ ence between systems depends upon the different manner in which these two sides are conceived of (as extension and thought, as nature and spirit, as real and rational, and in a Special degree upon the different methods of reconciling them. In the latter lies the main feature, and, therefore, the real principle of any system of modern philosophy. In the period of transition from the Middle Ages, there appeared side by side the philosophers who forgot God, and the mystics who despised the world. They Showed where the point Was to be found from which both natural and supernatural know ledge are seen to be' subordinate and partial aspects of a whole. For the Microcosmos of the' former, and the Micro theos or, God in miniature, of bohme, is.man, whose function. Is, to introduce thoughts of God into the world, to lead it to God. When philosophy becomes know ledge of man, it. Does more than merely transcend the one-sidedness of knowledge of the' Cosmos, and. Of know ledge of God; it now for the first time corresponds to our idea of it 2 and. Henceforth the path that philosophy follows is not to reach self by starting from the world or from God, but to start from self and find one's way back to a world and to God. Book excerpt: A page-turning novel that is also an exploration of the great philosophical concepts of Western thought, Jostein Gaarder's Sophie's World has fired the imagination of readers all over the world, with more than twenty million copies in print. One day fourteen-year-old Sophie Amundsen comes home from school to find in her mailbox two notes, with one question on each: "Who are you?" and "Where does the world come from?" From that irresistible beginning, Sophie becomes obsessed with questions that take her far beyond what she knows of her Norwegian village. Through those letters, she enrolls in a kind of correspondence course, covering Socrates to Sartre, with a mysterious philosopher, while receiving letters addressed to another girl. Who is Hilde? And why does her mail keep turning up? To unravel this riddle, Sophie must use the philosophy she is learning—but the truth turns out to be far more complicated than she could have imagined.

Book excerpt: "These essays are a valuable criticism of life by a man who had a wide experience of life, a man of the world, who possessed an almost inspired faculty of observation. Schopenhauer, of all men, unmistakably observed life at first hand. There is no academic echo in his utterances; he is not one of a school; his voice has no formal intonation; it is deep, full-chested, and rings out its words with all the poignancy of individual emphasis, without bluster, but with unfailing conviction. He was for his time, and for his country, an adept at literary form; but he used it only as a means. "

Thus, if they ever do reflect on whether they should bring others into existence—-rather than having children without even thinking about whether they should—-they presume that they do them no harm. Better Never to Have Been challenges these assumptions. David Benatar argues that coming into existence is always a serious harm. Although the good things in one's life make one's life go better than it otherwise would have gone, one could not have been deprived by their absence if one had not existed. Those who never exist cannot be deprived. However, by coming into existence one does suffer quite serious harms that could not have befallen one had one not come into existence. Drawing on the relevant psychological literature, the author shows that there are a number of well-documented features of human psychology that explain why people systematically overestimate the quality of their lives and why they are thus resistant to the suggestion that they were seriously harmed by being brought into existence. The author then argues for the 'anti-natal' view—-that it is always wrong to have children—-and he shows that combining the anti-natal view with common pro-choice views about foetal moral status yield a 'pro-death' view about abortion (at the earlier stages of gestation). Anti-natalism also implies that it would be better if humanity became extinct. Although counter-intuitive for many, that implication is defended, not least by showing that it solves many conundrums of moral theory about population.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the World, Vol. 2 of 4: From the Earliest Times Until the Year 1831 There are many to whom this characterizing of the Middle Ages will appear incorrect or common-place. For the barbarism of the Middle Ages has been portrayed and lamented so long and frequently already, that the desire for novelty and the love of paradoxes will not fail to find here subjects or at least attraction for panegyric. There are two particular causes that operate in favoring at the present day, the rise and welcome reception of ideas concerning the Middle Ages, which are directly opposed to all the preceding. The spirit of poetry predominant in modern literature, which has produced a partial preference for the Middle Ages, as they are so rich in poetical views; and the dissatisfaction, which may be just, with the degeneracy and the misfortune of our own time. But it may perhaps contribute to the mediation between the panegyrists and the censurers of the Middle Ages, if the idea of the word barbarism is first clearly understood.
