Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outdoor Pastimes of an American Hunter While a man is known by the friends he has, he is judged by the friend he is, and it is during the hours of his relaxations, and the periods of vacation from his routine work, that a man's personality is seen and judged by his friends. His public acts, if he be in public Office, are readily understood by them as the logical consequence of the characteristics they have learned to know, and have seen expressed in his hours of relaxation. By the great mass of the people of the United States Theodore Roosevelt was judged only by his public life, and the expression of his personality was seen through his fulfilment of public office. Fortunately for the traditions concerning him, soon after his death the book, Theodore Roosevelt's Let ters to His Children appeared, which moulded those traditions nearer reality than they ever otherwise would have been, for the majority Of men who had judged him by his public career alone, saw then in these letters the real personality with all the charm of its human quali ties. It would seem in the introduction to one of the books, which contains the records of trips taken by him for re laxation, or his short essays describing his observations and his thoughts at these times, that it would be most fitting to consider Theodore Roosevelt as a companion. Book excerpt: Theodore Roosevelt Jr. was an American politician, statesman, conservationist, naturalist, historian, and writer who served as the 26th president of the United States from 1901 to 1909. Roosevelt was a prolific author, writing with passion on subjects ranging from foreign policy to the importance of the national park system. Roosevelt was also an avid reader of poetry. In all, Roosevelt wrote about 18 books (each in several editions), including his autobiography, The Rough Riders, History of the Naval War of 1812, and others on subjects such as ranching, explorations, and wildlife. His most ambitious book was the four volume narrative The Winning of the West, focused on the American frontier in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Roosevelt said that the American character—indeed a new "American race" (ethnic group) had emerged from the heroic wilderness hunters and Indian fighters, acting on the frontier with little government help. The Political Works Essays on Practical Politics (1888) American Ideals (1897) The Strenuous Life (1899) Inaugural Address (1905) State of the Union Addresses (1901-1908) The New Nationalism (1910) Realizable Ideals (1912) Fear God and Take Your Own Part (1916) A Book Lover’s Holidays in the Open (1916) The Foes of Our Own Household (1917) National Strength and International Duty (1917) The Great Adventure (1918) Introductions and Forewords to Various Works The Historical Works The Naval War of 1812 (1882) Thomas H. Book excerpt: This book examines the political thought of Theodore Roosevelt, specifically his ceaseless desire and effort to reconcile America's individualistic tradition with the more collectivistic ideals of his Progressive brethren. Many scholars and lay-people alike cast Roosevelt as either 'conservative' or 'liberal,' but his political thought defies so simple an interpretation; it was more nuanced and had a larger purpose than mere ideology. A thorough study of Roosevelt's writings reveals his conviction that the concepts of personal autonomy and civic concern were not mutually exclusive. In fact, Roosevelt argued that it was because the principles of self-reliance and personal freedom were important that it was sometimes necessary for the entire community to use its collective power_and, in some cases, the institutions of the government_to enable individuals to do what they could not do alone. Moreover, while Roosevelt advocated and was responsible for a great expansion in the regulatory powers of the national government, he understood, in contrast to many other Progressive reformers, that inspirational rhetoric and positive example could be as good as institutional reform and the force of law in compelling individuals to support one another in a spirit of civic attachment. In his public writings, Roosevelt sought to shape the American mind in ways that he thought proper. Even his writings on nature, hunting, ranching, and military life were part of his political thought in that they were intended to teach Americans about the importance of balancing those individualistic values that are healthy and vital to a society (discipline, personal responsibility, and a strong work ethic) with such positive collectivistic values as an appreciation for mutual support and a concern for the good of the community.

Book excerpt: Among Theodore Roosevelt’s many initiatives, one of the most important accomplishments was his effort to convince the nation that conserving the environment was crucial to its continued existence. Years of national tours, presidential edicts, and policy wrangling culminated in an unprecedented conference of governors at the White House in 1908. Leroy G. Dorsey explores the rhetorical power of Roosevelt’s address at this historic conservation summit, specifically examining how the president popularized the notion of conservation in the public consciousness. Much has been written on Roosevelt’s conservation policy, but surprisingly little attention has been given to this pivotal moment in the rhetorical rally on its behalf. This book fills an important void in the history of conservation for all who seek a deeper understanding of a president so identified as a champion of the environment.
