Brownson, Vol. 4: Collected and Arranged It is not without much hesitation that the present volume has been prepared for publication. It contains many false theories and much rationalism, naturalism, and hardly disguised atheism. Its starting-point is as far from Catholic truth as it is possible to get without openly denying all religion and even the existence of any being superior to man. Our Blessed Saviour is indeed admitted to be the Son of God but in the same breath it is claimed that all men are equally sons of God The worship of God is restricted to the service of man, and the only means of attaining to a heaven hereafter is declared to be the creation of a heaven on earth. It is attempted to reconcile the aspirations of the soul with the desires of the body, spiritual and eternal with carnal and temporal interests, not by subjecting the latter to the former, the lower to the higher, but by declaring all equally great, holy, and important. Such and similar doctrines the author was earnestly engaged for the rest of his life in refuting, and neither the eloquence of style nor the depth of thought with which they were advocated would be a sufficient reason for presenting them anew to the world. Whatever is likely to tend to spread false or erroneous views of God, the church, or society, is equally condemned by the laws of religion and by the dictates of reason. Hence, the question is simply whether the heterodox writings of Dr. Brownson, when collected in a volume by themselves, and placed nearly, if not quite, in the order in which they were originally produced, are suited to confirm or to refute the errors they contain. They could confirm them only through the weight of his personal authority as a philosopher and a theologian, or else through the force of the arguments by which he supports them. But his personal authority must have the contrary effect, for every reader knows he has retracted and refuted all these errors. Nor can the force of his arguments mislead, for they are either refuted in this very volume or in the third volume of these works, as well as elsewhere in his writings. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Orestes a Brownson, Vol. 7: Collected and Arranged Dr. Bushnell is the pastor of a Congregational parish in Hartford, Connecticut, professing what are called in New England "Orthodox" doctrines. He has produced considerable excitement for the last five or six years, and is just now one of our principal "lions." He is certainly not without influence, and we are assured that he carries with him a large portion of his own denomination, and is followed, it is said, by the larger part of the younger Congregational ministers. The New Englander, the organ of the New Haven school, accepts his views, and Andover, we are told, adopts them as explicitly as it can, without forfeiting its funds. The indications now are, that the Bushnellites will either divide the Congregational body into two sects of nearly equal strength, or that they will leaven the whole lump with their peculiar views, change essentially the character of New Eng land theology, and virtually obliterate the last traces of New England Calvinism. Such are the indications; but what the result will actually prove to be, we by no means venture to predict, - though the latter alternative seems to us the more probable. We have discovered little that is new in Dr. Bushnell's views, - little with which we were not in former years perfectly familiar, or which has not had for a long time a large number of adherents both at home and abroad. He is evidently dissatisfied with all the recognized forms of Protestantism, and desirous of hitting upon something which shall dissolve and recombine them all in a new and far more comprehensive form, or rather no-form, in which all men shall unite, however divided and mutually hostile they may be in their mere doctrinal statements. As in poetry and history, so in all other departments. There are few masters or none. Religion is yet to be settled on its fast foundations in the breast of man; and politics, and philosophy, and letters, and art. As yet, we have nothing but tendency and indication. Brownson, Vol. 2: Collected and Arranged It is not without some misgiving that I present the following essay to the public; not, indeed, because I have any lack of confidence in the soundness of its principles, or the combined analytical and synthetic pro cesses by which I attempt to demonstrate the existence of God, the fact of creation, providence, the moral law, and the ground of mans moral obligation to worship God; but from a consciousness of my inability to do justice to the great thesis I have undertaken to defend, and my dis trust of the disposition of the public to receive and read with patience what is most likely to be treated as a metaphysical disquisition, and therefore as worthless. Nobody now reads metaphysical works, or any works that pertain to the higher philosophy, and especially such as attempt to vindicate theology as the science of sciences. All I can say is, that my essay is not metaphysical in the ordinary acceptation of the term, docs not attempt to construct a science of abstractions, which arc null, and deals only with concretes, with realities. Some of the problems, and the analyses by which I attempt to solve them, may be regarded as abstruse, difficult, and foreign from the ordinary current of thought, as all such discussions must necessarily be; but I have done my best to make my statements and reasonings clear and distinct, plain and intelligible to men of ordinary understanding and intellectual culture. Brownson, Vol. 11 The essays in this volume on the papacy and the supremacy of the spiritual order, directed chiefly against Gallicanism and political atheism, seem to me as necessary to meet the dominant spirit and tendencies of the present time as they were when first published, some thirty years ago. The corrections and alterations in them were made by the author about ten years ago, when preparing two essays, which will appear in the thirteenth volume, on Church and State and the Papal Infallibility. These additional essays were produced in order to carry out more fully the original design, which was left incomplete. The essays on the papacy were not received with favor by all the members of the hierarchy, and were strongly opposed, not as unorthodox, but as inopportune, as imprudent, and likely to expose the church in this country to unnecessary odium. But since the publication of the Encyclical of Pius IX., and the Syllabus, December 8th, 1864, and the decrees of the holy Council of the Vatican defining the supremacy and infallibility of the successor of Peter in the See of Rome, they are more likely to be regarded with favor by the hierarchy than they wore when first published. The view taken in these essays of the supremacy of the spiritual order, the normal relations of church and state, and of the power exercised by the popes over temporal sovereigns in the middle ages, when there was a Christendom, was the view held by the late illustrious bishop of Boston, whose correct theological learning and sound judgment were always of assistance to the author until his removal to New York from Boston, in October, 1855. The same view was given the author by his own study of ecclesiastical history, and he always held it, and always regarded himself as a thorough-going papist, never what is called a liberal Catholic. If a contrary impression was at one time entertained by the Catholic public, it was not owing to any change of doctrine or opinion on his part, but to Ids forbearing to insist on the high-toned papal doctrine of these essays.
