Sandars's "Balzac" remains a valuable piece of work, and I am extremely glad that it has been thought advisable to reproduce it in a new shape. It is a useful book for many reasons. In the first place it gives, without too lengthy criticism of particular works of Balzac, a most readable account of a complicated and interesting life. In the next place it is based on those "Lettres a I'Etrangere" which Balzac wrote to his Polish friend Madame Hanska, in the absence of which we have no means of ascertaining the inner life of the distinguished author. Books like those of Sir Frederick Wedmore in the "Great Writers" Series, or Miss Wormeley's Memoir, have become out of date. Mr. Saintsbury's various critical notices retain their original value, but, of course, the real source of much of our present knowledge is due to the collections of M. de Spoelberch de Lovenjoul together with various pamphlets replete with all the conscientious zeal of a thoroughgoing admirer. As Miss Sandars herself notes, Dr. George Brandes has written some valuable chapters in one of the volumes of his "Main Currents of Nineteenth-Century Literature," which, however, do not deal with the details of the novelist's life, but rather with the position which he holds in modern literature. The time is just a little later than that of Pamela, Giraud, and one similar motif is found in the Napoleonic influence still at work for years after Waterloo. T hough this influence is apparently far beneath the surface, and does not here manifest itself in open plottings, it is never theless vital enough to destroy the happiness of a home when mixed in the mortar of a woman's jealousy. The action is confined to a single chateau in Normandy. A considerable psychological element is introduced. The play is a genuine tragedy, built upon tense, striking lines. It is strong and modern enough to be suitable, with some changes, for our present day stage. The day of the playwright's immaturity '(noticed in the three preceding plays) is past. With this, as With all of Balzac's work, be improved by slow, laborious plodding, gaining experience from repeated efforts until suc cess was attained. In his dramas he was not to succeed at the first trial, nor the second, nor the third. But here at the fourth he has nearly grasped the secret of a successful play. While at the fifth Mercadcl - we are quite ready to cry Bravo 3 Who knows, if he had lived longer (these plays were written in the last years of their author's life). Book excerpt: Excerpt from Honore De Balzac, Vol. 2 Le Pere Goriot perhaps deserves to be ranked as that one of Balzac's novels which has united the greatest number of suffrages, and which exhibits his peculiar merits, not indeed without any of Ins faults, but with the merits in eminent, and the faults not in glaring, degree. It was written (the preface is dated 1834) at the time when his genius was at its very height, when it had completely burst the strange shell which had so long enveloped and cramped it, when the scheme of the Comedie Humaine was not quite finally settled (it never was that), but elaborated to a very considerable extent, when the author had already acquired most of the knowledge of the actual world which he possessed, and when his physical powers were as yet unimpaired by his enormous labor and his reckless disregard of "burning the candle at both ends." Although it exhibits, like nearly all his work, the complication of interest and scheme which was almost a necessity to him, that complication is kept within reasonable bounds, and managed with wonderful address. The history of Goriot and his daughters, the fortunes of Eugene de Rastignac, and the mysterious personality and operations of Vautrin, not only all receive due and unperplexed development, but work upon each other with that correspondence and interdependence which form the rarest gift of the novelist, and which, when present, too commonly have attached to them the curse of over-minuteness and complexity. No piece of Balzac's Dutch painting is worked out with such marvelous minuteness as the Pension Vauquer, and hardly any book of his has more lifelike studies of character. It would, however, not be difficult to find books with an almost, if not quite, equal accumulation of attractions, which have somehow failed to make the mark that has been made by Le Pere Goriot.
